Hooking up a PS3 - HDMI / DVI / Component... unofficial thread

i'm surprised someone hasn't started one of these yet... filing through over 100 pages on the "official ps3" thread to get this info isn't really feasible...

so that said... please post info and support for PS3 specific problems/issues related to high def installations.

for me:
my tv doesn't have an HDMI input so i'm using an HDMI to DVI cable.
i'm getting no picture but i AM getting a VGA (analog) signal... noticed that the tv input is noted as being "DVI-D" (digital).

so the questions are:
1. since there is no labeling either way (DVI-A or DVI-D) on the cable packaging, are these actually two types of cables or is the cable the same and the signal that is different?
2. is the PS3 sending out a digital signal or an analog signal through HDMI to DVI?

...so do i need a converter or another cable basically.

thx in advance

Jam it back in, in the dark.

bump and update:

i definitely have an HDMI to DVI-D cable. I've even tried another cable to make sure that wasn't the issue. I've tried hooking the PS3 up to two different model plasma tv's.

result: no pic.

i've tried every setting i could find under display output.
i've tried unhooking the composite cables when trying to get a display from the dvi input... as i've been told the ps3 can only send out one signal at a time (?)... still no good.

so what am i doing wrong?

what problems if any did u guys have with install and how'd u resolve them?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

DVI and HDMI are both digital, so, the answer is digital.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

yes... using the hdmi output on the PS3would be sending out a digital signal...

HOWEVER - from what i've found though:

there IS DVI-A (analog), as well as DVI-D (digital) and DVI-I (integrated).
so if you are trying to hook up DVI-A into a digital setup, it won't work and vice versa...

unfortunately, this isn't my issue.
I think it might be that my sets are not HDCP compatible... but i haven't been able to confirm...

i've been emailing product supports to get some answers...
i'll post results here in case they're some help to anyone else...

That's what I'm thinking. I have no idea why they did this, but the PS3's HDMI output is HDCP protected. A display device without HDCP compliance won't get a signal.

I'm assuming it works with the supplied cables that came with the PS3. Is that the case?

BTW, what's the make and model of the sets you're trying to get this to work on. I could look around for you.

I was speaking idiomatically.

There's no quality difference between component and HDMI anyway. The only advantage to HDMI is that everything's in one cable.

i've heard the max u can get out of component is 780p... but then i've also heard that the ps3 looks better at 780 than at 1080 anyways?

gotta get me some component cables tomorrow!

I don't know, that could be that 1080 can only be done via HDMI, I'm not sure. As for the 720 better then 1080, it depends on the circumstances.

720P > 1080i, 1080p > all
However that's speaking in the content and TV's native resolutions, if up/down scaling is a factor then that will change things too.

Component can output 1080p just fine, though I think it's at 24 rather than 60. Any owners out there with component cables want to give it a shot?

How ya doing, buddy?

Congrats, tommy. Hopefully you'll feed it more HD material (games, movies, trailers) as time goes on.

You didn't... intentionally break it so you could get a replacement, did you?
