USB Controller Drivers

Early this morning I hear my PC making all sorts of noise and look over as it's closing programs. Shit, it's restarting. So it reboots and I notice my mouse isn't powered on.

I plugged it into another port, then another, then another. I tried another mouse. Nothing. So I use the keyboard and make my way to the Device Manager to find out that now all of my USB controller drivers (I have 3 different devices) are as Windows says, corrupt or missing. I tried to reinstall them, same thing. I uninstalled them, then manually selected by "Have Disk" and still, the same thing. I did this with the drivers right off the CD that came with my motherboard, same thing. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd welcome them, but I'm stumped.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Try removing the devices from the device manager and the rebooting. When Windows restarts, it should detect your USB devices as new hardware and install drivers for them.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Yep, it installs the same corrupted drivers. "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

And I tried deleting the drivers too, so it would have to look on the CD, but the windows USB driver comes right back as soon as I delete it, so I'm fucked. Short of doing a reformat, I don't know what else to do...I've tried almost every combo of uninstalling, restarting, and reinstalling the drivers.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Time to format c: and reinstall. Long as you didn't make the mistake of having data on your windows partition, reinstalling should only take an hour. Obviously you don't NEED to format to reinstall, it's just cleaner and less ugly that way.

I have a feeling your motherboard might be dying though.

edit: and I assume you're using XP? it keeps like 2 backups of system files, so it's not going to look on the cd unless both are deleted.

Yeah I figured reformatting might be the resolution....I do have a bunch of shit on my Windows partition, just some data and such, but saving it is gonna be a bitch. Time to use the Accessability keyboard-based mouse to move these files. I've had a feeling the mobo is dying because I've had USB issues before, with the hardware powering certain devices but never actually allowing them to function.

I was speaking idiomatically.

It could be a problem with your PSU, also. What are your specs?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

It's not Lupus.

2.66GHz P4, 1.5GB PC2700 RAM, 400W PSU, Tyan Trinity i7205 Motherboard

Latest chipset drivers, USB controller drivers (well, if that's any good), XP Professional SP2. Drivers for rear USB ports corrupt, front case and internal ports corrupt (card reader, too) and also on the PCI controller card. It's not Lupus.

Additional Spam:
I'm using the XP Pro install disk's emergency recovery console right now, moved and backed up important files off the HDD and if this doesn't do it, I'll be reformatting by the evening.;

Additional Spam:
Interesting. XP's installation crashed and so I felt the need to use the recovery console to go to format the drive. I was able to access E: (USB drive) there, but Windows still didn't see it once booted. I'm going to finish with the reinstallation then.

Additional Spam:
MOAR SPAM!
MOAR SPAM!

All formally non-functioning USB ports now work. All hard drives now work, my hub now works, and I have hours of installs and restarting to do! JOY! This resolves my old issue with USB problems, but I still suspect that there is hardware failure going on.

FELIPE NO
