Lair
Well, I got a chance to see the most recent Lair video on PSN, and I don't know how I feel about the motion controls at this point, but one thing I definitely noticed, and that was a shitload of screen-tearing.
Anyone played or bought the game and actually enjoyed it? Anyone else watch it? Anyone looking for the soundtrack at least? Anyone? ;_; Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Been playing the game for the past week and I really enjoy it. I haven't got any problems with screen-tearing and I found the controls working surprisingly well actually. Yes, it's different but not necessarily worse than analog control.
I personally thinks much of the reviews are way too hard on the game. No, it's not the triple-A title everyone wants it to be, but personally I find it one of the best games the PS3 has to offer at this moment. The graphics are really good, especially in cut-scenes and the music is Hollywood-stuff. All in all a very enjoyable experience for me so far. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I'm still considering a Lair purchase. I don't know, I don't want to be bothered by what everyone else says but as a now-unemployed college student, $60 is a lot for a game you just aren't sure about, and only had mediocre interest in in the first place.
No matter what, I'll probably end up buying Ninja Gaiden Sigma first anyway. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
You know I've heard it got terrible reviews and it kinda turned me off from it, but I've never actually heard it was bad from a person who bought it/played it. I also never seen a used copy yet, so I can't be really bad. Maybe decent, they really did hype this game before it came out, so maybe the reviewers were just being hard on it.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
A lack of used copies could also just mean that everyone in your area wisely avoided Lair. I've yet to hear a good word about it, and it seems pretty stupid to pay $60 for a game that's supposed to be moderately decent at best.

Lair only sold like 40 thousand copies. There's not likely going to be that many used copies floating around any time soon.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
<@a_lurker> I like zeal better than guru.
<@a_lurker> There, I said it, I'm not taking it back. |
Finished the game tonight. I really enjoyed the ride from start to finish. Controls quickly became second nature for me and when playing Heavenly Sword a few hours later, I even had a little trouble getting used to standard analog control.
Graphics an sound is absolutely amazing. John Debney really created a beautiful score and I hope an OST will be released. On the gameplay site, it really is satisfying to finally end a mission. You really get the sense that you are influencing the course of a battle. Do bad and it has an effect on morale, but if you do well the battle can turn in your troops favor. Personally I would really recommend the game to anyone. You just have to have an open mind about the controls because it takes a little time getting used to it. But it really pays of in the end. ign.com rated it a 4.9. It's not that I think that ign knows what the fuck they're talking about in general, but it's still kind of a disaster rating for a hype game like this.
Oh, gamespot.com rated it a 4.5. Well, as your attorney, I advise you not to buy this game. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Bah, reviewers are fucking idiots. Back when Chrono Trigger came out GamePro gave it like a 5/10. And GAF gave Chrono Cross 5/10. Then IGN gave God Hand 3/10. In conclusion reviewers are dumb and people should make their own opinions instead of these retards who have schewed game ratings for years. From under rating(IGN) to over rating(PLAY). Like seriously, over half the review companies rated Suikoden 4 low because the boat was WAAAY too slow(among other things, but this was the biggest thing), yeah R1 makes the boat move like a speed boat, fucking morons.
How ya doing, buddy? |
Well, I rented the game for a couple of days, and while I don't think it's nearly as bad (or as difficult to play) as some of the reviews have made it out to be, the controls can become an issue, so it really boggles the mind when they don't make it optional to use sixaxis for flight. The crisis moment for me was the sea monster boss, which would have been difficult to accurately fight even with analog sticks, but was exceptionally hard with the sixaxis. (For reference's sake, yes, I went through the tutorials, and I do have the latest PS3 update, but I couldn't tell if the controls were "improved" or not.)
What I couldn't get over, though, was that ultimately it was just such an average game. I liked Rogue Squadron, but more for the fact that it was in the Star Wars universe, and it had hidden missions and ships to unlock. Lair just seems so empty of any fun gameplay at its core. What would have really made the game for me is if they worked on the ground combat more, turning the whole game into more of a Drakengard type experience, so that you would get more variety while playing. Having a soldier with Dynasty Warrior type attacks and RPG levelling would have gone a long way towards my enjoyment of the game. Sadly, that's not the case, so the whole thing gets repetitive fast, and the only things driving it are the story (which is decent, but not nearly enough to propel the action) and the graphics (which will only shock and amaze a maximum of two times before a better-looking game comes along.) I plan on picking this up when it becomes a bargain title. But I just don't see myself having fun with it, even knowing it came at a reduced price. There's nowhere I can't reach.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() John Mayer just asked me, personally, through an assistant, to sing backup on his new CD. |
