Fastwebs is useless
Ya, poor college student here. Anybody know where i can find some scholarship money? Fastweb is like totally useless; not giving me a single architecture scholarship and just chucking essay competitions at me. Not to mention several Women only scholarships despite the fact that I'm NOT. Collegeboard isn't much better and the ASU website is just as useless if not as useless as Fastweb.
So ya help a brother out. It's not like i did bad in high school either. 3.8 top 15% of class. Extra curricular and all that jazz. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Moved to the Advice Column.
![]() I can't help you there, buddy, me being French and all. Let's hope somebody more competent will step in. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Look into professor organizations for your specialization. For example, I belong to Materials Advantage and the Materials Research Society and have received scholarships in one for or another from both. Also, as a student, you should be able to get a decent discount for joining. Should only be $20-50 to join and it's well worth it.
Other than that, you can try talking to a career counselor at your school since they tend to know about those things a bit. Or even try talking to some of your professors to see if they know of any places or specific scholarships to apply for (or, if you're a pretty good student, they might recommend you for a scholarship). This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
The financial aid department on your campus should also have scholarships that sometimes aren't available online. I tend to take a look at the flyers whenever I happen to visit the office on my campus.
Individual major departments also have specific scholarships open to only students who major in their subject. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
Scholarships is tricky and overly complicated. There are so many yet most of them have requirements that a lot of us don't have (low income family, minorityship, etc.). Fastweb has never been any help for me whatsoever not to mention a lot of online scholarships can be hoaxes. I recommend your school counselor and thumbing through whatever scholarships are there periodically. Apply to as many as you can.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
Thanks all for the advice! I'll drop by my campus tommorow morning and start my quest.
If anybody else has any other tips please post them up. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Fill out your FAFSA. It's not all scholarships, but trust me, its government funding for us poor people. I fill it out every year, and as a junior in college I can say that they pretty much cover $10,000-$15,000 of my $22,000 tuition. There are loans and grants and scholarships all in one. It's a long form, but if you have you and your parents tax forms on hand, it can be completed easily. It also lets your school know about your finacial situation, so they can chip in as well. I get a $2,000 scholarship from my school because they see my FAFSA and know that I'm poor and I need it!
Also, check with your high school guidance counselor as well as college finacial aid advice... your high school may have scholarships available from your city, like Lion's Club, or Knights of Columbus. And, I know this may sound silly and I mean no offence by it, but are you sure you filled everything out in your account section of Fastweb? I too, use fastweb, and it gives me a TON of scholarships that I can apply for. Granted, I'm an English Major, so essays aren't a huge deal... but there's HUGE lists of activities that can apply to you. Make sure you check everything off. ![]() Most amazing jew boots ![]() |
When you're a middle-class white male in Engineering from the suburbs, there's really not a whole lot of the special interest type scholarships available to you. The closest Fastweb tends to do for me is ones for the National Vacuum Coater's Association of America. And like hell I want to spend my life designing materials for vacuum systems.
