Radio pranks
About a decade ago, when my parents still drove us to school, we'd tune into a British radio station (Capital 95.8FM) with some of the craziest DJs ever, including this clown who decided to play random cellphone ringtones throughout his segment one day. My mom went crazy trying to figure out whether her Nokia phone was actually ringing. And we're halfway across the world on Borneo island receiving the transmission through a satellite relay in the Brunei Sultanate. Imagine the havoc he caused in London!
What other memorable pranks have your favorite radio stations played? Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Well my radio stations tend to be pretty gentle. But I know of a radio station in Minneapolis that was pretty much making fun of the world and stuff. They would make prank phone calls to professors and stuff and have questions that weren't very serious. AM1200 I think is the channel.
Their commercials were hilarious too. They made what seemed like real commercials and had phone numbers and everything but it was all fake. Hilarious! There's nowhere I can't reach. |
None of my radio stations are that funny. There is this one station though that ring up random people in the morning at like 7:45am and have an "old woman" talking on the phone to these unsuspecting callers.
It's called "the old woman game" and they have prizes for people who correctly guess how long the unsuspecting caller is going to be on the phone to the woman. Not a prank as such but funny. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
My favorite radio show has to be Free Beer and Hot Wings. Their humor is always fantastic, but they never have to resort to the Howard Stern-esque style of just trying to do outrageous things for the sake of doing them.
They used to have a segment called the Wheel of Bad Games where they'd randomly choose some game for a caller to play. Easily the best one was "Make Your Momma Cuss" where you had thirty seconds to make your mom swear at you over the phone. The best caller they had just swore at his mom for thirty seconds completely dumbfounding her. After time was up, the DJs were pissed enough at the dude playing the game since he just cursed out his mom for half a minute and got nowhere, so they made him call her back and apoligize over the air. Her response? "He's a fucking dumbass." Classic! (Also the guy that won in under 10 seconds by telling his mom he was gay was brilliant.) I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
The guys down here on 99X do all sorts of crazy stuff. But the best one ever was when they tapped into another radio station's telephone network. This particular network was doing an interview with John Gotti's daughter. The 99X guys played a clip of a machine gun going full blast, right on the air. After a few seconds of silence, there was a *CLICK* as she hung up the phone.
Classic. I was speaking idiomatically. |
