Myst-like Music?
After years and years of listening to game music I find that music like Myst, Uru, Zork, Schizm, and Ecco Defender of the Future sets me in the best mood. Basically ambient type music with melodies and rhythms.
So now I'm looking for any and all suggestions as to what albums, artists like these that I may like. I really need some good new music to listen to so please if you have a suggestion, drop me a line quick ![]() Thanks. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
In general, I'd recommend Junya Nakano's pieces. Nakano is more well known for his percussive work and skill with rhythmic pieces, but he has done a fair number of ambient pieces (that often have a strong rhythmic quality). A few gems that I can think of right now include "Ripples on Mind" from Another Mind. A few selected tracks from FF10 are in this vein as well, such as "Underwater Remains".
A fairly well known Japanese composer (actually, some would say infamous) who does a lot of ambient work is Naoshi Mizuta. His Parasite Eve II soundtrack has a very strong sense of disquietude with its moody and acoustic stylings. Some of Yoshitaka Hirota's tracks are wonderfully atmospheric, like "Deep Meditation" from Shadow Hearts II. But these are quite few and far between, really. If you prefer more beautiful ambient songs, you could try out Jeremy Soule's Icewind Dale soundtrack. The soundtrack has mostly mood-setting pieces of the orchestral nature. I's also recommend Mark Morgan but I'm sure you're already familiar with Morgan from his work on Zork Nemesis and Zork: Grand Inquisitor. Anachronox has some really nice mood setting pieces you might be interested in, like the tracks that play in Limbus, Sender Station, Sunder and a selected few from Hephaestus (e.g. Hephtower). There's nowhere I can't reach.
I think therefore I am... I think.

Here are some soundtracks you might enjoy:
- Atlantis - Atlantis II - Ecco: Songs of Time - Eternal Darkness - Journeyman Project 3 - Return to Krondor This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Definitely Jeremy Soule...His ambient theme (which seems to make up around 80% or so of the stuff I hear from him) should probably be what you're looking for.
Also consider both Phantasy Star Online/Universe and Junya Nakano's pieces...Both are known for being extremely moody and generally ambient electronica. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?
I'm taking over this town...
I'm screaming for vengenace... I'm shouting at the devil... I'm not dead and I'm not for sale... Ain't lookin' for nothin' but a good time... |
I'd also suggest Inon Zur and Michael Hoenig, who are mainly found in the form of gamerips these days--their work for sword-and-sorcery games often has that vibe.
On the Japanese side, there's tons of ambiance to be found in the Silent Hill series, though it's a lot more industrial and off-kilter than Myst. Motoi Sakuraba can whip up a good atmospheric theme or two as well, when he's not busy rehashing his Battle Theme ![]() How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |

I'd maybe recommend Ico's soundtrack too as its all ambience and sparce.
Si What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
