IN DESPERATE NEED OF HELP

Okay, my girlfriends computer has been having a lot of trouble lately. It has been resetting on its own sometimes, certain programs have stopped working, sometimes the computer won't respond...

And just now, she recieved a message along the lines of this after having turned off her computer for the day, then went to turn it back on:

Quote:
"Windows could not start because the following files are missing or currupt:

/Windows/System32/config/system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup by inserting the original windows setup CD rom

select r at the first screen to start repair"
Obviously the above does not sound good, but... I'm kind of hoping this situation is not completely irrepairable. If anyone can help IMMEDIATELY, with ways to preserve the files on her computer, please respond and help to the best of your abilities.

Thank you.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Uh well, exactly what it says in the message ;_; If she has a windows CD handy then she might be able to get her stuff back, though the repair console (the thing you'll end up at following those instructions) left me wondering what the piss to do . This happened to me a while back on an old drive / install of windows. I just took out my drive and put it in another pc and copied over the files it said it was missing, though once I fixed that, it was something else that was missing or corrupt. Eventually it just wouldn't do anything at all >_>.

It's a possible sign that her drive is dying, which is never nice news. If she can get some nerd with spare bits over there to backup all her stuff on the drive, and maybe then start fresh with a new one or something, then eek.

The simplest way to preserve the files is to physically remove the drive and hook it up to another computer as a secondary drive or by an external case. Then it's a matter of copying over everything worth saving until this problem gets resolved.

Follow the directions on the message. It's easy enough to do, and hopefully will fix the problem. If not, I recommend finding out if the drive manufacturer has a downloadable program to check the drive for errors to see if it is failing or if it's just a software issue.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
