Zodiac (new David Fincher flick)
I figured it was a good time to make a thread with the just-released trailer that surfaced-
http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/zodiac_hd.html This movie looks absolutely fantastic. Anybody know more about it? Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
Finally a trailer.
I've been waiting for this film for some time. As a huge fan of Se7en, and having an interest in the Zodiac killer this seems tailor made for me. also I've suddenly become aware of how creepy that makes me sound. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() GI Joe is the codename for America's highly trained special mission force. Its purpose: to defend human freedom against COBRA. A ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world. 24 can't jump the shark. Jack Bauer ate the shark long ago. Now 24 can only jump the water, and that doesn't mean anything. - Jazzflight <Krizzzopolis> acid you are made of win. <Dissolution> And now my god damn scissors are all milky |
I was going to write something snarky about how this would be Se7en again, but with the zodiac instead of the deadly sins, and how that was pathetic. I was going to point out that reusing an already successful formula is not indicative of creative genius and therefore I'm not all that impressed. And I liked Se7en, too. (Such a stupid spelling of the title, though. Who puts a number in a word like that any-- Oh, wait. eXistenZ has stupid spelling as well and I really like that movie. End tangent.)
Anyway, the trailer looks good, so ha-ha on me. The cinematography or visual style or whatever appeals to me, and Gyllenhaal and Ruffalo also appeal to me. I could see renting this. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I would like to see this. Looks kind of good.

Seeing as how this is based on a true story and he was never caught, and could technically still be alive, it does have potential to be scary. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]()

Yeah, when I saw that it was based on a true story and not just "hey let's make another movie like Se7en, but with the zodiac!", I was able to look at the trailer with an open mind. Certain marketing tactics work better on me than others, apparently.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Gyllenhaal is like my favorite actor out there so I can't wait too see it after all those delays (originally scheduled for this fall!).

Finally some news from Hollywood's best director.
I like it. Wonder if there's a neat twist at the end again... Most amazing jew boots ![]() |
Wark! |
Fincher hits the ball the whole way home with his self-reflexive Zodiac whose principal lies in infatuation and media effects on society through the framing of his camera - note the references to movies/television/pov shots. What follows is a very finely crafted piece that compares favorably to JFK, and pleasurably less labored.
I hate to disappoint but this is less a thriller than character study - so it doesn't offer Se7en-style chills or an outright twist ending. That's not to say it's not without thrills; the killings are executed with precision, and one in particular left me with chills all over. Another piece it compares favorably with is last year's undervalued The Black Dahlia (both film's lifeblood is examining investigative obsession), though I can see this sitting better with audiences, albeit not to the level of the director's own Fight Club or Se7en. I merely liked Se7en, and saw much more to Fight Club than its fans seemingly dumb it down to, but Zodiac is his best work. It's less flashy, a definite benefit, and its no-nonsense tone - supported by some very solid acting work - avoids pretense that would have been damaging. An unwillingness to engage with the material will no doubt bore, but each frame is packed with cinematic cues. Fincher's film is an extremely mature one, asking audiences to sacrifice lazier, crowd-pleasing pizzazz in order to reap the full reward. How ya doing, buddy? |

I am very much a fan of David Fincher's work, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this. I don't really see him hearkening back to Se7en too much for success; it seems that films about serial killers is becoming a current trend in films anyway.
After watching the trailer, I can say that I am looking forward to it more. I found the choice of music kind of interesting there, not what one would expect out of a movie with such a theme. Actually, I'm required to see this movie for my Film Classics class. Apparently, there will be a essay question about it on the final. My teacher has a bit of a thing for Fincher. How ya doing, buddy? |
I don't know much about it, but my aunt's friends with Anthony Edwards, and he took her to watch them make a few scenes. It was after Jake Gyllenhall or w/e had finished all his scenes and EVERYONE made fun it of him, apparently. It looks pretty good though, although I've had a few people tell me it wasn't that good.

I've heard this was an excellent film. Can anyone verify this?
I was thinking of taking a few friends out to see this within the coming weeks, so I'll just have to sit and hope that this film stays out in theatres for at least a month and that it's a good film. Lord knows I'm waiting for 300, though. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Zodiac was beyond excellent. A few of us saw it last night, and I've been dwelling on it ever since. It truly sucks you in the entire time and doesn't let up. It is relentless suspense that is expertly crafted the whole way through. Some scenes are just incredibly unsettling. It almost demands a second viewing just so you can experience its greatness again.
Performances are spectacular throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo steal the show, but Robert Downy Jr. completely outdoes himself. He doesn't appear as much as he should, but when he's on screen, it's great. He deserves an oscar nod. The movie is nearly flawless. It doesn't feel nearly as long as it actually is (2 hr. 40 min.). You're left wanting more. Go see it. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
