I just remembered how the SotW site used to quote people commenting on the winning track. It definitely adds some flavor to the list of downloads. How about bringing that tradition back? :-)

WE BE NEEDING SOME NOMINATIONS :|

Also, since the domain switch, new server, etc., Gamingforce has been significantly more stable than it was in the past. The multiple forum system of SotW was designed so that, if GFF went down, SotW would continue uninterrupted, but GFF hasn't gone down in forever. Pretty much the only people who vote at STC now are me and DC72, with the occasional person voting every now and then if there's a track they really want to support for some reason.

What say people to reining it in and returning to a unified SotW at GFF? If disaster strikes, we could always jaunt back over for a spell, but right now the neglected threads at STC just look too much like forum spam to me, and if they're going to be disregarded, I don't see why I should continue cluttering up the thread list.

I just remembered how the SotW site used to quote people commenting on the winning track. It definitely adds some flavor to the list of downloads. How about bringing that tradition back? :-)
Not a terrible idea at all. We had a short initiative to fill in blank descriptions a very long time ago, but it petered out pretty quickly. Since the domain switched toasted the archive forum, we won't be able to fill in a bunch of descriptions for tracks in the 20-50 range or whatever's missing, but we can certainly get stuff up for every week after. Would anyone be willing to go through old voting threads, pick the best comments for the first place tracks, and contact the commenters for permission to put them on the site?

Well, that doesn't necessarily prevent current fans of tracks from the 20-50 range from providing praiseworthy comments. It might be better than leaving them blank when a bunch of other tracks get added comments.

Also, a nomination will come later tonight. Gotta decide on something decent.

Ooh ooh, I have one! I haven't played NiGHTS 2, and I know people complained about it a lot, but one thing about it is absolutely as good as the original--the music. It has a high risk of turning men into girls, but if that means listening to music this lovely, give me a dress and call me Shirley. This track in particular is an amazingly intricate construction and superbly catchy and fun. It makes me want to buy the game just so I can listen to the sound test mode.

Nomination:
Composer: Naofumi Hataya, Tomoko Sasaki
Title: Aqua Garden - Chase Mission
Game: NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams game rip
Date: 2007/2008

I'll vote later, I hope.

I think I did good, but I've still got a bunch of comments saved in a text file for Weeks 21-32 from last time we tried to update the comments, so that's a good chunk of them good and done.

Spoiler:
21 ESPGALUDA Original Sound Track <N.T> - Fortress City
It comes together in the end of the track and it takes more than one listen for it to really catch on. Certain aspects of it seem uninspired and routine but is generally engaging, energetic without being to bubbly.
-Dr. Uzuki

22 Gitarooman Original Soundtrack <COIL> - The Legendary Theme (Album Version)
The guitar in this piece just totally owns me. It sounds more like a montage in a movie or something of that nature rather than something out of a video game. The reason I like this piece the best is because it had so much.....feeling behind it.
-Cyan_Ide

23 The Sims 2 (PC Game Rip) <Maxis> - Pop Station - Track 4
I had no idea music from The Sims could be this good. This is one very, very catchy song thanks to its well implemented pop-like elements (wihch makes sense, considering the track title). And it sounds vaguely like something from The Corrs. Defitniely deserving of points.
-Elorin

24 ZUNTATA LIVE 1998 güten Talk from the earth ~AUDIO FILE~ <Zuntata, Shuichiro "Shu" Nakazawa> - S.L.M.J.
From the best live vgm concert ever, we have an excellent on-stage performance by one of the best (and arguably THE best) vgm band ever. While not my favourite track from the show (I admit it took a few listens before it grew on me after hearing other great tracks like "Daddy Mulk", "Live at the Moon" and "Grid Seeker"), it certainly is an excellent track like no other you'll hear. That's the great thing about Zuntata, they're so unique it's almost like they're a sub-genre of vgm unto their own. Unlike others that try to be different, Zuntata manages to be great at the same time.

Onto the track itself. The weird sound effects and the female voice really fit in well with this piece. A groovy tune being played by Furukawa on the shoulder keyboard for the first 2:30 followed by a seamless change into the slower portion of the track. For those who won't bother seeing the video, there's a slip-up by the percussionist (Shu) at 3:58 where he accidentally tossess away his baton in the middle of his solo. He has to scamper off stage to retreive it as the crowd cheers. The drummer does a good job of keeping the beat going while waiting for Shu to return and complete his solo. After that bit of comic releif, Takahashi picks up with a decent 20 second guitar solo before Furukawa and Yack take turns playing out the rest of the track on keyboard. Overall, nice variation with high-energy and slower parts mixed in with cool percussions and an above-average melody. While I see many people not giving it a chance because of it's sound effects, don't dismiss this band because of it. They grew on me and if you give them a chance, they'll grow on you too. Have a listen to the other tracks I mentioned from this show which you'll probably like better.
-_DH_

25 Tales of Phantasia (SNES Game Rip) <Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura, Ryota Furuya> - Freeze
What really stands out, to me, about this track is the tone used. Unlike other icy themed tracks, which stray toward a more cheerful, almost Christmas-like theme, this takes the opposite approach. The track starts with a chilly piano, and clarinet introduction, which is accompanied by sleigh bells. The bridge is really neat, with a synth clarinet solo that furthers the dark theme by like something out of a solemn march.

This leads into the main event: a wonderful flute melody that is perfectly accompanied by synth horns and strings. The sequencing in this section is rather complicated, yet the various instruments flow almost perfectly together to create a dynamic, fluid composition that represents some of Sakuraba's finest works.
-Excrono

26 Batman Returns (Sega CD Red Book Audio) <Spencer Nilsen> - City Limits
The first time I discovered this track, I was expecting a synthesizer-oriented piece. What a nice surprise that was the guitar (which I love the sound of)! This track can be soothing (chorus effect, some guitar parts), but also engaging at the same time with the backbeat and the faster melodies. Also, the fact the guitar isn't "static" gives it a passionate aspect.
-Rimo

27 Deimos Rising (Game Rip) <Ben Spees> - Deimos Game 1
I knew about the poor samples when I nominated this song, but I've always thought that this one has some great composition. The track kicks into high gear immediately with a tense string loop and increasingly forceful brass fragments, followed by three repetitions of a phrase, culminating in a large organ climax. Next, you get let down by a smaller, more melodic techno section with a wandering synth leading the way. The orchestra returns with a slightly more subdued tone, introducing the final section, heralded by a variation of the string loop that began the song. Once again, a sequence of three instances of a phrase are played with more intensity each time, ending in a triumphant woodwind burst silenced by a stroke of the strings.

Some might call it clichéd, but in my mind, it keeps everything interesting perfectly throughout.
-CHz

28 Game Music Graffiti <Mario Freaks Orchestra, Nintendo Sound Staff> - Famicom Detective Club ~Ushiro ni Tatsu Shoujo~
This is a kooky little piece that practically oozes 1980's Miami Vice vibes. It's got claves, a sultry sax, and the synth effects we all remember from those days of yore. It even has a hair metal riff in there for good measure. I could do without said riff, but this track captures that 1980's SoCal/Florida atmosphere perfectly.
-orion_mk3

29 Ganbare Goemon ~Deroderodochu Obake Tenkomori~ Original Game Soundtrack <Goemon Production Team> - Underground Paradise (Underworld Castle)
REWRITE!
While I own this game, I never got so far as to actually hear this music in context due to a lack of controller pack. I'm a great fan of the MNST (the prequel) soundtrack and when that USF set was released so was this one. This soundtrack is very much comparable to its predecessor, so I advise all of you who did enjoy MNSG to check out the rest of this soundtrack.

Anyway, the track. Neat intro, followed by a great, albeit short melody that doesn't get too old despite its length and speed. Full set of instruments really helps this. Nice closure which works with the songs fast pace.
-TCK

30 Wolf Fang ~ Tumble Pop <Gamadelic> - Rohga (Wolf Fang)
This is exactly the kind of cheezy 80's synth rock you should have come to expect from me by now. While the melody is just ok, it's the solos that really make this one fly. The first half is decent but the track really takes off at 2:39 when the intro is repeated before moving into an excellent guitar solo. The final solo is one of the best I've heard in vgm - the synth and guitar go back and forth before fading off as they play in unison. I don't see how it can be seen as droning - especially the synth portion at 4:54-5:17 which is just plain catchy. Hiroaki Yoshida sure knows his solos as evidence from the Skull Fang tracks and the arrangement of Ken's stage from the Street Fighter II Tribute album. This track as well as others from the "Delicious Selection Gamadelic" album solidifies his spot as one of the best soloists to be heard in vgm.
-_DH_

31 Atelier Iris ETERNAL MANA 2 Original Soundtrack <Ken Nakagawa, Daisuke Achiwa> - Blazing Earth
It sounds really nice and has some unusual synth. It also picks up quite in the end, which is always good, though some of the motives have been repeated just a little bit too overtly. It's rather a minor complain though.
-Djinova

32 Seal of Evil (Game Rip) <Brahma Studios> - Dream
I appreciated the light, airiness of this track. At first it didn't seem like much but I quickly grew to enjoy the moments between each note as well as the notes themselves. I'm not always fond of ambience, but this works for me. I am given images of both feudal Japan and the tribes of South America; it really is a soothing mixture. I love native rhythms and this so reminds me of the strong, celebrational songs our ancestors used to play. I'll be listening to this plenty from now on.

May nominate later.

This week was pretty substandard. Only three tracks I actually cared about, which was convenient enough to decide on my point spread:

3 points: Wiz 'n' Liz: The Frantic Wabbit Wescue (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Name Entry
2 points: Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon (PC Game Rip) - Closing Medley
1 point: Hook (SNES Game Rip) - Neverland Tundra

And I see that there's hardly any SotW activity going on at STC, I agree we could just keep it here.

Okay, I have a bit of a weak spot for Japanese happy hardcore when Beatmario or DJ SHARPNEL do it, but it's very hit-or-miss, and in the Sky is well off the mark. Egh.

Knight Gear is decent, it reminds me a bit of arcade music which it may be, never heard of Gran Chaser. Anyway, enjoyable stuff.

Up next is one of my least favorite composers, and BOOK OF DAYS is bad even by his standards. His staple muffleverb that makes everything he does sound like a cheap general midi arrangement by a 15 year old who just downloaded Cubase is present, but the composition is a complete mess and actually annoys me, instead of merely boring me like his usual. I don't know how anyone could possibly enjoy this enough to nominate it.

Neverland Tundra is an okay track, although the arp gets pretty annoying after a while. Melody's nice though, it's not the worst thing ever.

Mars Landing reminds me a bit of Lumines I guess, except it's not as quirky as most of the tracks from that game. It's pretty groovy though, not too bad.

Space Quest's Closing Medley has a pretty good 80s vibe going and it's a nice theme, and it's a bit quirky which is always nice. Some of the changes don't work so well to me, it's a bit chaotic overall, but I guess it's helped by a bit of nostalgia for Space Quest (I played it with PC speakers and never heard it like this, though).

This Holland track reminds me too much of music I'm supposed to be making instead doing SotW, so I don't like it much. It's just really generic, and even being titled after my home country isn't gonna do it any favors.

Seems like the best was saved for last, as this Wiz'n'Liz track is superb! Fun and good melodies, sweet sweet FM synths, and so on. Good stuff. Name Entry gets my vote!

Scores:
3 points - Wiz 'n' Liz: The Frantic Wabbit Wescue (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Name Entry
1 point - Gran Chaser - KNIGHT GEAR
1 point - R - Racing Evolution (Game Rip) - Mars Landing
1 point - Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon (PC Game Rip) - Closing Medley

Ditto. I'd be willing to throw a comment up for a random track I really liked that's lacking a description.

[Edit] And while we're at it, points. Meh week.

(2 points) Grim Grimoire Soundtrack CD - BOOK OF DAYS
(2 points) Hook (SNES Game Rip) - Neverland Tundra
(2 points) R - Racing Evolution (Game Rip) - Mars Landing

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Here's your nomination:

Composer: Matt Gray
Title: The Mansion
Game: Last Ninja 2 (C64 Rip)
Track: 12
Year: 1988
It's now in the Nominations folder.

And I agree about bringing SotW back to GFF exclusively. It's a different time now.

It seems like nobody at STC (who is not already a GFF member) even participates, so I approve of bringing it solely back to GFF. However, you could talk to Bigblah about possibly making a trial run at the VGMdb forums; I know there are some people there who aren't registered here. Only problem is the activity there is rather low.

Trying with VGMdb couldn't hurt as all; AFAIK, there'd be a better chance of roping in some new voters, even though the forum is smaller.

beatmania IIDX 14 GOLD ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - in the Sky: Typical dance beat fluff. It sounds like most frantic rhythm genre game stuff that I've in heard in passing by the arcade. In that regard, it's nothing special.

Gran Chaser - KNIGHT GEAR: Synth-driven rock is always appreciated. Though it doesn't go far beyond the usual boundaries of creativity, it still has its fun moments. The synth-guitar solo was solid without becoming cheesy, and that's not exactly a simple accomplishment.

Grim Grimoire Soundtrack CD - BOOK OF DAYS: Although I like nominations with strong cultural influence, BOOK OF DAYS is simply too lackadaisical to impress me. It just lingers without truly accomplishing anything. It would make acceptable "town" music but I can't see it being much more.

Hook (SNES Game Rip) - Neverland Tundra: I've finally figured out why I dislike many SNES tracks, and it's not the "tinniness" factor. The sound samples are quite bare, and when used alone, they sound too hollow and sparse for my tastes. It's only when the samples are layered in a complex fashion that the SNES accomplishes truly noteworthy sound. Having established this, "Neverland Tundra" is on the simple, and therefore empty, side of SNES music. Pass.

R - Racing Evolution (Game Rip) - Mars Landing: The slowly progressing intro was an instant appeal for me. The chunky bass and snappy drum kit was also quite nice. I was disappointed by the fact that the steady development didn't lead to a clearly established melody. For what it is, it's still enjoyable and deserves to place this week, but I feel as though it could've been great. Right now, it's only good.

Space Quest III - The Pirates of Pestulon (PC Game Rip) - Closing Medley: The melody is distinctive, and that's good. Unfortunately, it has very little backup. The depth improves by the end, thankfully, but it's not quite enough to make up for the first half which sorely needs accompaniment.

Twisted Metal 2 (PlayStation Game Rip) - Holland [Field of Screams]: I confess, I nominated this one. When doing so, I knew it wouldn't place. I'd be shocked if it did, since it doesn't exactly cater to the softer sensibilities of most VGM fans. But who cares? I love this track and it's one I've wanted to nominate for two years. So screw aiming to win this week, I'm sharing one of my personal faves. Blues rock is grossly underrepresented in VGM but "Holland" makes up for this by being thoroughly awesome. If you don't like this track, then I'm sorry, you don't know how to rock.

Wiz 'n' Liz The Frantic Wabbit Wescue (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Name Entry: It's slightly different but that enhances the charm, actually. For a Genesis track, it's rather impressive, even. It lacks the usual "grinding" quality that most Genesis sampling possesses. The melody is decent and I found the sub-layers to be pretty good too. A quality effort.

Spread 'Em!

2 Points: Gran Chaser - KNIGHT GEAR
2 Points: R - Racing Evolution (Game Rip) - Mars Landing
2 Points: Wiz 'n' Liz The Frantic Wabbit Wescue (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Name Entry

Yeah, I didn't give my own nomination any points. Big deal. It was never gonna win anyway and I was cool with that at the time of nomination. There simply aren't enough rock fans involved with SotW to give it the praise that I personally feel it deserves. I basically ended my own placement streak on purpose. :P

To make up for vainly nominating a song nobody else would enjoy, here's a nomination that I think will more than compensate:

Album: Quilt Original Soundtrack
Track Title: Beyond a blue Sky -From Greensleeves- (karaoke ver.)
Track Number: 21
Composer: Noriyasu Agematsu (feel)
Year: 2006
Catalog Number: HBMS-034
Source: GMR Online

This was taken from punkmaggit's post at STC. Even though it's one person, it shows an interest in SotW's presence there. As much as it may appear as spam, I haven't seen anyone actually complaining about the SotW threads - and STC members have never hesitated to bitch about GFF's activities. As long as there's even modest interest, and as long as nobody is objecting to the threads' presence, I'd like to keep sharing SotW with STC. Though people may not speak up, it does seem as though a select portion is still paying attention and silently enjoying the nominations. That's good enough for me.

beatmania IIDX 14 GOLD ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - in the Sky

Has certain beautiful moments, yet the frenzied eurodance/trance parts spoil the song for me. Not that I can't get into these genres at all, but the headache is simply coming too soon when the beat and synth lines are repetitive and fast as in the current fashion. Must admit I have a certain bias against pop HAPPY-HAPPY bemani music. In this case, I can actually see why some people can enjoy this tune, but alas, I'm not with that gang.

Gran Chaser - KNIGHT GEAR

To quote a Robbie Robertson song:
"I like it, I like it, it's good."
She said "You like it now
But you'll learn to love is later."

Yeah, I like this song, but I don't know if I could ever love it. After several listens, it worked its way to the pleasure sites in my brain, but haven't been able to reach my heart though.

Grim Grimoire Soundtrack CD - BOOK OF DAYS

Left me desiring more as I haven't felt anything spectacular while listening. To me, it would work well in-game as background music, but on a standalone basis, it's harder to appreciate. Not bad however.

Hook (SNES Game Rip) - Neverland Tundra

There are interesting aspects, especially the fact of not being a straight orchestral take for a film-derived game. Still, I didn't feel the urge to get off my chair and start to dance nor become enthralled by a profound beauty. It is not the majority of music that has these strong effects on me however, but this week, other songs came closer to generating special reactions than this one.

R - Racing Evolution (Game Rip) - Mars Landing

Killer beat! Very solid and sharp sound. Being over 5 min. in length, I consider the track to be slightly too long for what it brings forth; not enough variations or melodic elements. Still neat, but a little extra would have sold it for me.

Space Quest III - The Pirates of Pestulon (PC Game Rip) - Closing Medley

Ah, Space Quest III! This is a quite memorable theme. The medley format is harder to get into since there is no soft transitions between the segments and it actually distracts from the meat that is the main theme. It's a classic in the PC gaming sphere, and while it's interesting as it is, I would have wished for a little more elaboration on the drum lines (with a solo somewhere ), with this score having been written by the former drummer from Supertramp.

Twisted Metal 2 (PlayStation Game Rip) - Holland [Field of Screams]

One of my favorite track from the whole series! It even had the honor of having been inducted to my "VGM Hall of Fame" (a.k.a. being allowed to reside on my portable MP3 player, which is a very selective process). Right from the start, it explodes in your ears and the dynamism never stops until the 3:04 mark. I love how so many instruments contribute to the melody and how lively this one is. Crash's concern is understandable because it is indeed not a tune which characterize the basis of classic VGM and for that matter, it will not appeal so much to those who are conservative about musical genres that should be respected for a game use or people who are not into blues rock. Good thing you've been able to get over this little matter and give the chance to at least a few people to discover and appreciate this excellent track.

Wiz 'n' Liz: The Frantic Wabbit Wescue (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Name Entry

Matt Furniss quickly became one of my favorite Genesis composers. He created interesting music and, with the help of the audio driver programmer, Shaun Hollingworth, the sound is magnificent for FM synthesis. This particular track is heartwarming and quirky. While more or less childish in nature at times, the varied and relatively elaborated (for a chiptune) elements and sections, especially the succulent rise starting at 0:57, make it possible to get over this less attractive point. I've fallen under the spell...

Rimo's post is SO propped for the Robbie Robertson quote.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

There's an audio deformation at 1:41 of "Mars Landing"; could we get a fixed copy if it places?

Otherwise, agreeing with the general sentiment, weak week. "Mars Landing" was pretty enjoyable though.

Thanks for the kind words. I still have to thank the people responsible for the SOTW for "Reflection into the Eden" from beatmania IIDX 14 and "In the Wind" from Gradius III. It's tracks like these that really make me look forward to the SOTW.

I was speaking idiomatically.

3 Points - Mars Landing - clear winner for me this week
1 Point - Gran Chaser - KNIGHT GEAR
1 Point - Twisted Metal 2 (PlayStation Game Rip) - Holland [Field of Screams]
1 Point - Wiz 'n' Liz The Frantic Wabbit Wescue (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Name Entry

Regarding the current discussed matters: a) SoTW at STC: yes or no?; b) comments on gold placings; c) this week sucks?

a) yes: I too think SoTW should at least have a branch somewhere, so it's not totally isolated. You may also never know whoever from STC downloads and listens to the tracks. It's worth it and hopefully the additional work is not a problem. Expanding it to VGMdb is not even a bad idea.

b) yes: I also support the idea to make comments for tracks that don't have any yet and would offer myself for that purpose for a few tracks. It would also help giving an outlook on the winner: genre, tempo, instruments...

c) depends: I first thought it's unremarkable, but by now it's quite enjoyable. Weeks with short tracks often have this tendency.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

A random, noobish thought: if you're looking for another forum to host Song of the Week in, would the Overclocked Remix forums be adverse to such a feature?

We asked before when the idea of spreading SotW to other forums came about and the answer was no then. Their rules on copyrighted material essentially forbids Song of the Week from operating there.
