Preacher

I read a bit of this a number of years ago, then promptly forgot about the whole thing. I happened to chance upon some megauploads of the entire series, so I took the opportunity to read it through. And now, years after the series ended.... what a mess!

At first when I was reading it, I thought it was kind of interesting. That comics could be so gritty was kind of a new thing to me at the time (it was like junior high age). Reading through it now, though, I felt like it was less interesting and just more weird. Someone in #comics made the statement that Preacher was about how screwed up Ennis could make the series instead of anything with a good plot, and I guess I'm inclined to agree.

Up til the showdown at Angelville, I was following along pretty well. But come the Grail, the deeper investigations behind Cassidy, and ARSEFACE, it was just getting plain messed up. I enjoyed it quite a bit more when Ennis was trying to be funny (thankfully Starr never stopped being a joke, although it came at the expense of the plot making any sense).

Anyway, I guess I'm rambling. What do the rest of you folks think about Preacher?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

So basically this series is wildly overrated and unpopular, as I suspected.

THANKS GFF

Overrated? Probably not. Unpopular? I don't know. I haven't read it, though. Maybe it's a great work of fiction and nobody on GFF but you has read it.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I started reading it a while ago. I've got way too many books on my plate though. Not really much time to read Preacher ATM.

How ya doing, buddy?

SAKA WINS COOKIE PIE FOR PREACHER THREAD.

Well, this is probably one of the books where people are kind of prejudiced at, hence they don't feel like reading it. Especially for people who are kind of afraid to try books outside the superhero theme.

At first when I read the title, I thought it was about Jesus and stuff (which it is), and it's one of those religion-themed boring books. But then after reading a few issues, I got hooked. Ennis is such a great writer, and the way he wrote this book is awesome in a way, that it flows continuously issue to issue. Well, it kind of got a bit boring in the 50-is issues, but once it rebounded, I got hooked again until I read the last issue and wanting more.

This is probably one of the books that I can proudly recommend to mature comics readers.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I read the whole thing in about 2-3 weeks a few years back.

I don't really see the same decline that you do. I loved it start to finish. I bought all the graphic novels off of eBay because of it. Fucking epic story.

I'm religious, and even though the series ends on an "anti-God" note, it was a kickass ride (I know how to separate fiction from my personal beliefs).

Arseface-related:
The scene where Arseface and his girlfriend see each other as beautiful people, I just wish Arseface's girlfriend would have "seen" him as his original self, not a blonde jock guy. That would have really hit me more emotionally.

Early in Series:
That scene where Tulip gets blown away at the end of an issue. Wow. That was one of the best shockers I've ever seen.

How ya doing, buddy?

Spoiler:
I think the way how Tulip was revived was kinda 'meh'. But when she was shot, it was a "WHOA WTF NOW?" moment.

I think it went kinda boring during the part where they're in New Orleans. Not sure though.

Jesus de Sade:
Spoiler:
At his party, Jesse walks into what looks like Jesus de Sade filming a porn movie. At first Jesse's like, "Whoa cool, can I watch?" but then he notices the little under-age girl sobbing in the corner and goes ballistic, beating Jesus into a pulp.

Word of God:
Spoiler:
Whenever Jesse uses this power, whether intentionally or unintentionally, it just makes me laugh:
1) "Go SHIT yourself." - KKK member looks behind him and realizes he just did;
2) Jesse punches a guy who stabbed Tulip: "FUCKING DIE!!"
policeman #1: "Holy shit, he's dead!"
policeman #2: "That's.....a heckuva punch...."
3) "Go Fuck yourself." (you can guess what happened to the Sheriff who he said that to).

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

My favorite one was when
Spoiler:
he's at that Midwestern Native American military ground and he tells a group of them to "Fuck off". As the group is running away, one of them turns to another and goes "F-forever?"

Regarding the Word of God, here's another one, if I remember correctly:

Spoiler:
There's a guy torturing Cassidy with a bolt-action rifle when Jesse walks in and starts walking towards him. The guy knows about his power and aims his rifle at him.

Guy: "Yeah, I know about that power of yours, you say stuff and make people do whatever you want. Well, just try it! One word, muthafucker! Just one word and I'll blow your fucking head off!!"
Jesse: (still walking towards the mook) "Miss."
Guy: (shoots the wall towards Jesse's left) "Fuck!" (keeps shooting anywhere except at Jesse) "FUCK!!"

Fucking Funny!

The whole story ended well enough though. Didn't you all think it had a good ending?

I got the first volume of the graphic novel two years ago and read it as soon as I came home. I thought it was excellent. I especially loved the beginning when
Spoiler:
Custer started breaking down everyone inside of the tavern and exposing of their secrets. That was great. What's even greater is the fact that he's got the 'Genesis' inside of him.

I can't stop laughing at Arseface. He doesn't even know what that means haha.

I haven't checked out the rest of the series, because I was steered towards other titles. I need to get back into this again.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
