There's an Addam's Family track?!
OMG BIAS ALERT Most amazing jew boots ![]() |
Augh, I hate finding out about stock samples being used in songs I like when listening to new stuff. In this case: 0:48 of Fake Time.
Of course, it doesn't matter in the end, as I still enjoy it a bit, but -1 for effort. EDIT: Very disappointed with this week. What I initally thought was the best song got repetitive as hell. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]()

Arcanum - Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Soundtrack - Tulla The music gets props for being period-specific (i.e. Victorian), but like virtually all Arcanum tracks, it's dull as ditchwater.
Armored Core 3 Silent Line Original Soundtrack - Artificial Line The rhythm line here sounds like a washing machine that's trying to choke down a jumbo load of laundry. And the rhythm line's virtually all the song's got--the first stirrings of real music are almost two thirds in, and don't amount to much. Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Gyakuten Saiban 3 Courtroom Suite We're going to have to listen to these subpar Phoenix Wright tracks for months, if not years, because the game was so popular. And while this orchestrated song is lightyears better than the repetitive crud that was trotted out during the BSC or previous SoTW's, it's still dull and undercooked by any stretch of the imagination. Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins The metal hits are part of the "ruins," I suppose, but is it too much to ask that they be in synch with the rest of the music? The harp and string bits are nice, but it's hard not to be distracted by the random metal clangs before the song hits its stride. Psychonauts Original Soundtrack - Stay Out of the Moonlight From the artist who brought you Grim Fandango! Definitely on the jazzy noir side of things, and pretty average in that regard, save a few neat effects here and there and some harmonica solos. I hope the game had more to offer than this, since Grim Fandango had such a cool soundtrack. Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- Another Street Fighter song that sounds nothing like Street Fighter! I have to say I'm getting mighty sick of these. Decent jazzy synth, nothing more, and repetitive as snot. The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending A cute little bouncyfun tune that's about as out of place in the Addams family milieu as Bozo the Clown, but works well enough as a standalone piece. beatmania IIDX 11 IIDX RED Original Soundtrack - Fake Time I was just saying how we needed more mindless, repetitive attention deficit rock around here. Man, what a stinker of a week. The Point Spread Psychonauts - 3 pts. Addams Family - 2 pts. Jet Force Gemini - 1 pt. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |

I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() so they may learn the glorious craft of acting from the dear leader |
I'm new to this, so if I do anything wrong let me know.
Stay Out of the Moonlight: I liked the Jazz style, but it was so-so overall (vague... meh). Artificial Line: This song gave the right atmosphere for dueling it out in AC's. Although, the percussion was a little over board, the strings were good (even though you could barely here them). I would have chosen the Artificial Line remake on Nexus, the percussion was toned done a ton in that version. Water Ruins: The strings and the harp were well done in this song, I don't think the "clang" sounds randomly placed throughout the song were needed (let alone fit along with the melody), oh well. Courtroom Suite: It was decent, I liked the melody, but it seemed to drag the notes out too long. Fake Time: This was fun to listen too, but it was kind of random almost, which was annoying. (I also gotta fill up my 6 point block...heh) Water Ruins: 2 pts. Artificial Line: 1 pt. Courtroom Suite: 1 pt. Fake Time: 1 pt. Stay Out of the Moonlight: 1 pt. WEEK 74 NOMINATION Artist/Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda Album: an cinniùint Track Title: Battle with the Devil Disc Number: 2 (of 2) Track Number: 18 Catalog Number: SBPS-1001/2 Year: December 25, 2001 Source: rpgfan.com/soundtracks/tsugunai/index.html --I decided to do a track from “an cinniùint”, and narrowed the songs down to "Battle with the Devil", "Early Afternoon in the Village", and "Happiness". In the end I chose BwtD. (If your bored, check out the songs and see if I chose right :P) What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |

![]() Tulla: It's nice to have a string quartet solo as a nomination. Unfortunately, Tulla winds up being too drab and melancholy for my tastes. The strings are nicely performed, and it's a serviceably somber piece. But it's rare that music of this mood captures my interest. Artificial Line: Generic and mostly forgettable. The introduction of the strings at 1:23 improved the track slightly, but not enough to save it from being a completely textbook military theme. Gyakutan Saiban 3 Courtroom Suite: HOLD IT! Well, not really. This piece is adequate, and it may well befit the scene in which it's played. On it's own, it works but it doesn't possess a whole lot of "spark". I found that the movements were too disconnected; it switches from one instrument to the next with very little transition to smooth the piece out. If I were more into heavily dramatic music, I could rate this track higher. Water Ruins: Another slow, oppressive track. This is the same musical team that does Timesplitters, and I like a lot of the work in that series, so I was hopeful for a nice, aquatic feeling. This track isn't quite so watery as I'd imagined it'd be, but it's not unlistenable. The sound of pipes being struck is a clever touch and punctuates the track well. Still a bit heavy-handed for my sensibilities, but it's different enough to keep me interested. Stay Out of the Moonlight: Who sucked the life out of this piece? If not for the intermittent harmonica usage, I'd label it a Dirge Noir. God, this one is dull. Oh, I'm sure it's great mood music in-game, but here, it's pretty much like stabbing my ears with a rusty sickle. Christ, if you're gonna use a steel guitar, at least make it interesting. Alex and Ken Stage: Well, it's not slow and depressing. That's something. Boooooooo for repitition, though. It has some nice elements but is desperately in need of greater variation between them. It's good enough for a point, but I can't justify anything more than that. Bathroom ~ Ending: Even if this weren't an Addams Family track, I'd think it was pretty bubbly (pun intended). It's still got that SNES "tin" quality, but the melody and sound effects diminish this flaw. This is the kind of track that would lose during stronger weeks but will probably do well here for lack of much competition. Fake Time: A little short, a little derivative, but otherwise decent. I can endure guitar mashing and electronica a lot longer than other SotW participants. I guess my real complaint with this track is that once it finally gets some chops, it's pretty much wrapping itself up. Point Spread 3 Points: The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending 1 Point: Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins 1 Point: beatmania IIDX 11 IIDX RED Original Soundtrack - Fake Time 1 Point: Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- Talk about the week that went *CLUNK*. Even if "Bathroom ~ Ending" had been from a different game, it still would've received my full support here.
Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
Tsugunai's representation in BSC (Fortress of Orcs, Eternal Soul, and one more, iirc) is the only thing going against it, I think. You could say "No way, it's Mitsuda!," but SotW eligibility is not determined by the composer.
Since not everyone here takes part in BSC, I'd say it would be ok. EDIT: Voting time. Sorry for the short comments, but I'm not feeling very wordy right now. Artificial Line - Decent mood piece. Gyakuten Saiban 3 Courtoom Suite - Not as enjoyable as I had expected. Nearer to the ending was the best part. Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- - It's ok. Nothing special. Water Ruins - Another, better mood piece. Bathroom ~ Ending Track - Interesting, upbeat piece. Tulla - Yay for being a string quartet, boo for being boring. :-/ Fake Time - I actually like a lot of DDR/Beatmania songs. This one's all over the place, but it's decent. At least it's more interesting than most of what's offered this week. Stay Out of the Moonlight - The highlight of this week, and the only really enjoyable track. I love its style. 3 pts. - Stay Out of the Moonlight 1 pts. - Fake Time 1 pt. - Gyakuten Saiban 3 Courtoom Suite 1 pt. - Water Ruins Yeah, definitely a ho-hum week. Oh well, there's always next week. EliJaH, generally, we go by a maximum of three Song of the Week (SotW) nominations per game before the game's soundtrack is "retired" and not valid for further nominations. I can't remember the number of Tsugunai nominations that have been made before on SotW. Kaleb is our records master so he might be know. Not too much problems if a potential SotW nomination has been nominated in BSC unless it's very well known like FF or CC/CT. Note that seemingly obscure game soundtracks that receive numerous BSC nominations suggests that the game soundtrack might be fairly popular and thus potentially ineligible for nomination.
But where in doubt, you can always ascertain a nomination's eligibility by simply seeking opinions from SotW participants. In the event where discussions go nowhere and there is no clear resolution, SotW staff can set up a poll to put a song's eligibility to a vote. But of course, try to exercise some discretion. I've learnt that the hard way. :P This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

3 points: Psychonauts Original Soundtrack - Stay Out of the Moonlight
2 points: Arcanum - Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Soundtrack - Tulla 1 point: Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins Close: The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- is the crappy album version of one of my favorite tracks. The official album version of 3S's soundtrack is awful. When the SFIII:3S track were remixed for the Sega Dreamcast release of the game (probably for all the home versions), this track was a lot beefier and energetic, plus the songs were split into the Mix 1, Mix 2, Mix 3 versions, which were all excellent. A lot of the other themes in there were also enhanced. If anyone knows where I can snag a complete rip of the Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Dreamcast soundtrack, lemme know, as that soundtrack is infinitely stronger than the album version. Attached is an example... I was speaking idiomatically. |
That mix is great, Liontamer. It literally removes the useless section and keeps all that matters. I seriously would've considered it a stronger track and might have even changed my vote.

Was this week really that terrible? I haven't been here for long, but I liked this week much more than Week 72. An aftereffect of last week's thoroughly enjoyable battle, perhaps? Or maybe I'm just biased because I get to see my own nomination in action for the first time.
Arcanum - Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Soundtrack - Tulla - Doesn't have enough substance to it for me to really like or dislike it. There isn't anything that stands out as impressive... maybe with more complexity this one would have received some points from me. Armored Core 3 Silent Line Original Soundtrack - Artificial Line - As a few other people mentioned, the strings need to be brought out to the foreground. However, the overall effect was enjoyable, maybe even something I'll keep around to listen to for a while. Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Gyakuten Saiban 3 Courtroom Suite - Has an interesting style that pulled me in on the first listen, although I wish the section with the maracas around 2:20 lasted longer... I guess I'm just a sucker for maracas, though. All portions of the song were fairly likable. Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins - I'm in agreement with orion_mk3 about the random metal clangs. They should have at least been aligned with the rhythm: that way they could count them as attempt at percussion rather than random noise. The rest of the track, however was better than average. Not the strongest song from JFG, by any means, but stronger than the average. Psychonauts Original Soundtrack - Stay Out of the Moonlight - Ironically, this is the song I least liked this week. It looks like it's in line for victory, so far, but meh, I don't see anything in it. Everything except the little bursts of harmonica was boring, and the harmonica wasn't spectacular, anyway. Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- - If the remix a few posts up had been submitted rather than this version, I would have voted for it over my own nomination. As it stands, I like it, but the remix is a lot less redundant. Also, I wish a cleaner sounding sax synth (or what I assume is a sax synth) had been used. The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending - Again somewhat ironically (I think this song is in second place at the moment), this was my second to least favorite track. The melody was kinda neat in a few patches, but I found the constant bubbling noises extremely irritating. And the song is far too long for what it has to offer. beatmania IIDX 11 IIDX RED Original Soundtrack - Fake Time - Short and lacking in complexity: not the best beatmania has to offer. After the first listen through, I considered giving it a point, but it failed to hold up to further examination. *~Point Distribution~* 3 Points - Courtroom Suite 2 Points - Artificial Line 1 Point - Alex & Ken Stage Runner Up: Water Ruins What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() |
Arcanum - Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Soundtrack - Tulla
Mostly functional music. Morose string track. Some more stirring music than the usual at around 2:00++. Armored Core 3 Silent Line Original Soundtrack - Artificial Line I really like this track, although I was rather disappointed in the beginning as well. Very slow melody, almost purely developping, rather than a melody. But it's got energy and is always a blast to listen to. There is this chirring sound along with the beats I find unique and interesting. beatmania IIDX 11 IIDX RED Original Soundtrack - Fake Time This track felt a bit short, but has a decent package. Otherwise it's hard to characterize this one beyond "listenable synth rock". Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Gyakuten Saiban 3 Courtroom Suite A very varied track, that only captures my interest halfway. But that's typical with most orchestral tracks. I tell you, the awesome part starts not until 3:40 onward. Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins A nice track that captures the water element well in the beginning. Later on it becomes purely epic. The end was a bit of a letdown. Psychonauts Original Soundtrack - Stay Out of the Moonlight - I didn't like this track. It's such a slowpoke, but it doesn't generally mean I don't like slow tracks. It's just when tracks don't interest you, you start thinking of reasons, lol. Well, it simply didn't cut it, shall I say. Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- - One word: DANDY. Tis' was good music, melody, instrument-choice and beats are fine. So it's supposed to be bad? The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending Yeah, that's some good jumpy action. It's strange that I didn't get the Addams Family feeling at all, I thought it would be more "zombieish" music, whatever this is. But the comical aspect was present. Joint Spread: 2 Cigars - Armored Core 3 Silent Line Original Soundtrack - Artificial Line 2 Cigars - Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- - 2 Cigars - The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending No cigar as it were... Water Ruins. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
2 points - The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending
1 point - Arcanum - Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Soundtrack - Tulla 1 point - Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins 1 point - Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- 1 point - beatmania IIDX 11 IIDX RED Original Soundtrack - Fake Time This is what happens when nominations are quickly demanded, I don't nominate the best of songs. I really like all the stuff Tetsuya Tamura does in IIDX, but I couldn't decide on a song, or find any decent long versions of anything he's done. As a result, I picked the song that probably sounded best in the game-length two minute version, but it still suffers some shortcomings of being so short. I still love the adrenaline and crazy rocking in Fake Time, but there is better from him I hope to find given more time. Nomination! If this is too mainstream, tell me. This is kind of bordeline in my opinion. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete <Noriyuki Iwadare> - [4] Field to Tomorrow Source: http://www.chudahs-corner.com/soundt...F01239%2F01240 There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
Considering some of the stuff we've allowed, despite a mantra of obscurity, I doubt anything from the Lunar series would be turned away.
Also, yay for Iwadare! How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
-No hyper-popular Squeenix (Final Fantasy, Chrono, Kingdom Hearts) -No hyper popular Nintendo (Mario, Zelda, Metroid) -No series that have been extensively whored throughout the site (Ace Combat) Pretty much everything else seems like a go. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
And that's mostly fine by me, as I value quality more than obscurity.
It's just nice to have some sort of loose code that prevents the ubiquitous influx of new members nominating "Aerith's Theme" once every other month. Though there are other games/series that I'd personally consider taboo for nomination besides the ones you mentioned. Castlevania, Kirby, Guilty Gear, Sonic the Hedgehog (Game Gear tracks are curiously exempt), and Mega Man (classic and X titles anyhow). That's just me, however. Most amazing jew boots ![]() |
Pretty subpar week. I felt there was only one track that was above all the rest.
(3 points) The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending (1 point) Arcanum - Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Soundtrack - Tulla (1 point) Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins (1 point) Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- Runner up would be Fake Time, for that crazy ending. ![]() |
Unremarkable week.

I get back into the nominating game and everyone dumps on this week. Typical...
(To be fair, it was a sub-par week. That's what your peer pressure about nominating gets.) (3 points) Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins: My nomination. A case of my personal favorite over a track better suited to showcase the soundtrack (wait 'til next time). I should have realized the metal clanging would have been an issue with voters; by now it's become part of the track and doesn't stick out much. Everything else I love. It nails the watery feel of the level, does sublime work with the piano, and segues nicely into its more epic second half. Will always be one of my favorites. (2 points) The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending: Not what I was expecting, but this bouncy, SNES-era fun, and consistent to boot, which is more than I can say for... (1 point) Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Gyakuten Saiban 3 Courtroom Suite:...this track, which seems to have all the right elements in place but can't really put it all together until the last third of the track. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
![]() ![]() Hopefully, votes will come in soon... EDIT: Actually, this week isn't really horrible. A number of interesting songs. Quite undecided this week so using a more scatter shot point distribution. (2 points) Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Gyakuten Saiban 3 Courtroom Suite (1 point) Street Fighter III 3rd Strike 'Fight for the Future' Original Soundtrack (JPN) - Alex & Ken Stage -JAZZY NYC '99- (1 point) The Addams Family Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (SNES Game Rip) - Bathroom ~ Ending (1 point) Jet Force Gemini (Game Rip) - Water Ruins (1 point) Arcanum - Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Soundtrack - Tulla Jam it back in, in the dark.
