What would you do in this situation? For guys.

I was walking downtown here in Philly yesterday afternoon with my mom because we were going to get a bite to eat together. So we are walking and some lady walks by us and my mom's purse accidentally bumps into the girl. My mom says oops I'm sorry and the lady flat out takes a hard swing and hits my mom in the face. Now I'm not one to promote violence on women by any means. In fact even if a girl punched me in the face, I still wouldn't hit a woman. I'd just restrain her.

But this was a unique situation and I didn't know what to do. I couldn't sit there and let that lady walk away after hitting my mom in the face. Especially when she looked early 30's and my mom is in her 50's. So I ended up decking her. I sorta feel bad about it, but I didn't know what else to do. Was I supposed to hold her while my mom sat there and took shots at her? Was I supposed to run around and try to find a cop? I really didn't see any options. It was the first time in my life I ever hit a girl. Not proud of it, but all rules are out the window when it comes to mothers.

But my mom HAS to take preference over the rule. You have to protect/defend your family. And it sounds like she was quite a bitch (the woman that hit your ma) to flip out over something so small. I say good job.

I wouldn't have hit her. However, I might've probably bad-mouthed her so bad that my mom would have trouble speaking to me for a while. She's rather opposed to vulgarity, but I see no alternative in this case. This woman needs/needed to be put in her place.

It was probably a protection impulse. I would've done the same thing if I were in your shoes. If some woman hit my mom, I probably would've beaten the shit out of her also. I don't care who you are, you don't mess with my family.

If I was a guy I probably would have done the same in your situation to be honest. Morally I wouldn't have felt too great about myself but it would be my immediate reaction; sometimes your emotions can override your sense of ethics.

I don't know what I would have done. I need to be as mad as hell just to want to hit someone at all, so it's hard for me to consider in cold blood what I might do. I definitely wouldn't just let it go, though.

I doubt I'd have been able to make myself hit a woman with a closed fist under any circumstances. I just would prefer to think of myself as a guy who doesn't do that. I think I'd always want to find some other way to handle the situation, but that's me speaking with a cool head. Certainly, I repeat that I wouldn't just let it go. There would be some kind of repercussions.

I think the whole general idea of not hitting a woman was when it was considered typical that a woman would slap and men would punch. Basically, the idea of not hitting a woman was so that a man wouldn't beat a woman into submission after she slapped or kicked him for getting 'fresh' with her.

But a woman throwing a punch for basically no reason? She has got more than just ovaries down there and is open game to getting a broken jaw. Family, friends...you just don't touch them.

If this happened to me and my mom, I'd have to say I'd probably go Bruce Lee on that woman. Aka swift elbow to the mid-section followed by my fist pivoting upwards and smacking her in the chest/face, followed through with the idiotic look and scream I'm sure an elbow would hurt a lot more than just a punch too (assuming you're not full of bulk muscle that is).

If the lady had just gotten an attitude, I wouldn't touch her though. I would just apologize, and say it was an accident, and try not to escalate it. Most people would just let this pass as well if this is all that happened.

But since she hit your mom over something like this, I'd have to also say the rules kind of got beat out of like your mom's breath when the lady threw that punch. Anything more than that is excessive though, unless she pulls out a gun or dangerous weapon.

Technically, the ideal response would have been to press charges against that woman for assault. I'm guessing the police wouldn't have really given much of a shit about it in real life, though. So it's easier to take justice into your own hands, probably. What you did seems pretty fair. I don't think men should feel it's more violent to hit a woman than another man, anyway. That seems pretty condescending towards women, who are incredibly tough if you think about it. I mean, they torture themselves just to wear cute shoes, babies come tearing out of their vaginas, and so forth. They can take a punch.

This would have been a great situation for a taser. Personally, I would have probably tried to rip the bitch's hair out.
