Modernizing your lifestyle
So, I got to wondering, how many of you prefer to stick with a cell phone that's only capable of incoming and outgoing calls?
Do you prefer your digital camera's making themselves known rather than having it end up in the wash because it was too small to even register as an item. Do you still have a cassette player in your car so you can hook up your mp3 player with an adapter? What with all the small tweaks and additions to the latest models, how many of you prefer to stick with the basics rather than dishing out the cash for extravagance for whatever reason (nostalgia, financial issues, etc.) Personally I prefer vinyl to CD quality, just cause I have an affinity for scratching. I like drawing traditionally rather than digitally. And I'm still using win 98 on my laptop cause I honestly have no reason to upgrade. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
For the most part I keep my life pretty modern. There are a few exceptions, however.
I drive a Manual Transmission and will until they stop making them. It's flat-out more fun. I also use Analog watches exclusively (except when exercising). My Digicam is huge, but that's because I went all the way to DSLR and bypassed the Point-and-Shoot stage. My cell phone is ancient and basic, but I can throw it against the wall and nothing will break, so I consider it a good thing. When I go out biking for fun, I ride a 10-Speed that my father built back in the mid 70s. Still in great shape and to build something of comparable quality and weight nowadays would probably cost you $1500-2000, and even though its age is showing (through the overall look of the frame and the lack of modern features) I love it. I also despise the new minivans where you push a button and the door automatically slides open oh-so-slowly. Another part to break or to jam in an accident. No thanks. How ya doing, buddy? |
I used to be all about modernization but kind of stopped for a while, until recently.
My computer is pretty much the same as it's been for the past 2 years. I don't really upgrade any programs or do much to it, it's pretty much perfect the way it is. But my laptop I try to get the newest and most efficient programs. My digicam is very small and hi-tech, I like that. My cellphone is a razor, and I love how small and sleek it looks, I wouldn't want any other phone. I guess it depends. At home, home home, I pretty much leave everything the way it is. But when it comes to buying new things I'm a cross between getting whatever's the cheapest and whatever's the most hi-tech. I know, it's contradictory but that's just how I am. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
The only way out is through.

I usually upgrade my computer every 3-5 years, so I can play some of the hottest games. It's always a struggle between PC gaming and console gaming, financially, for me.
I refuse to get a cell phone. I don't need people to be able to contact me at all times. I just don't imagine myself a person with a cell phone. If I ever did get one, I wouldn't want to succumb to its text messaging addictedness. I'm already addicted to AIM in strange ways that I can barely express. Or maybe I could get that thing from EarthBound, the reciever phone. So I could only recieve calls. That'd be kinda nifty. Apple kid would call me up and be all, "Hey, Ness, I got this zombie paper ready." Most amazing jew boots ![]() In your dreams, magical thoughts All things are real, unless you dream they're not

When it comes to electronics, I like to have the best and just about most recent there is. My computer is still fairly top end and I even prefer wireless infared mice to standard wired mice. If I had money, I'd shell out for a top of the line HD TV, as well as a quality DVD player.
I like to stay pretty modern, but right now I can't do it because of cost. Though one thing I do like 'old-fashioned' are houses and furniture. I love turn of the century Victorian furniture as well as gothic furniture. Beyond that, yet give me some high tech gear. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Simplicity is always best. I seem to be going backwards, as I have just started rolling my own cigarettes.

These days, I rarely stick out for the latest model and gadget. This is mostly due to the fact that I have no money because I am a student. However, I buy things that are useful for me, such as buying a DVD burner sometime soon. Yes, I still only possess a CD burner. I also own a 40 GB still.... which is completely full.
I hope to get a cell phone sometime in the next year, but it will probably be one of those free phones.... nothing too snazzy. FELIPE NO |
My mobile phone is about the cheapest on the market.
Uh I insist on using wooden hockey sticks, all that carbon fibre crap can just GO. I still buy CDs, go away bitorrent. Tape deck in the car although I will upgrade it one day. I just haven't got around to it yet. I use a radio transmitter to play my mp3s. I can't see myself buying an HDTV or HDVD player or whatnot for at least a million years. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I'd consider myself fairly modern & up-to-date.
- I recently got an mp3 player (Creative Zen V) that connects to my laptop and charges the battery at the same time, nifty stuff. - I want to wear a nice 'bling'd' analog watch but my wrists are kinda small ;_; ...So I've been using the built-in clock on said mp3 player. - I've recently been using a wireless network for my internet, so now I just need to get a wireless mouse and then I'll only have to worry about 1 cord: Power Cord ![]() - I have a stereo with CD Player/Tuner/etc.,. but I haven't gotten CDs in a fair while. - I do most of my banking online and am pretty much needing internet ![]() - My camera is digital and takes video as well ![]() - We recently got a DVD player and I'm often burning movies to DVD-Rs for us to watch. - Oh! and I have an extenal Hard Drive which I frequently use. So overall my life has gotten a lot more modern over the past couple of years, and I hope it continues to do improve ![]() Most amazing jew boots ![]()

My electronics are modern for the most part. I don't make it a priority to update my phone, computer or the like unless absolutely necessary (something gets damaged).
I still have a tape deck in my car because I prefer to hook up my MP3 player to it. One of my friends offered to install a CD player for me a long time ago, but I had to decline because the tape deck is still convenient for me. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
Hmm, now that I think about it, I'm not really all that modern. I got an HDTV and a decent computer but that's about it. I've never owned a cellphone, nor an MP3 player and a few years back I found a ratty old walkman on the bus one day and tried it out. I used it up until March '01 when it finally croaked.
I wonder, are the startled looks people have when they walk into my room due to the TV and computer or everything else being nowhere near as modern? This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even. |
I like to keep up with all the new gadgets. I did a lot of investing on my desktop to bring it into 2006 during the summer with a new 160GB external HD, a memory boost to 1 GB, a new 500W power supply, a TV tuner and a new video card...which I haven't put back into my computer since it gave me problems. Still have a year left on my cell phone contract...but I can't wait to get a new shiny one (this one is all scratched up). I have basically scratched out getting a laptop now that I have grown fond of my desktop, but I am looking forward to getting a digital camera, a colour laser printer, and a wireless 7.1 speaker system for the computer.....some day. Of course I do have an $8000 credit limit with Future Shop to solve this minor problem...but apparently you have to pay that money back or something?... :P

I still churn my own butter.
But uh, yeah. I don't have a MP3 player, I use a CD player. The main TV is older than me, our desktop computer hasn't been updated in four years, and I don't own a cellphone. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Our PC is fairly up to date, despite my complaints. I hate all the new MS OS's. Why cant they just make something highly effecient that works, instead of continually having to increase the crap I don't want it to do, and make it require more and more resources, with jsut as many problems as older versions. 'If it ain't broken, don't fix it'. Problematically stuff is broken, and thats just not whats getting fixed ><.
We do have an HD TV, but have no intention of getting an HD player any time soon.

I like devices to be simple, rather than a "jack of all trades but a master of none". My phone makes phone calls and allows for texting. It is virtually bomb-proof, as most digital electronics are, so I don't see the point of upgrading to a video-phone with mobile internet etc etc. I have devices already that can do those things better than any phone, and I don't have to waste time navigating through a huge nested menu system on my phone to access all the features unlike those of today.
I have an MP3 player and the usual things, plus a fairly hefty workstation, but it's a necessary thing for my work to have a powerful system so that's unavoidable. I don't upgrade to be cool or to keep up with the Jones's because that's pointless; why waste money on something you don't even need? I also refuse to buy into technology "fads" that I know will be superseded in the near future or that are poorly implemented. FELIPE NO ![]() |
i'm not very up to date.
-i don't have a cell phone. -i want a diesel manual volkswagon rabbit. i'll get one soon after i get my license soon after i get a job. i despise my parents' automatic cars. -i have an old home-made PC: 1660mhz, 512mbram, and just recently got XP because i found an XP cd laying around. -i use a cassette player because my CD and MP3 player5s are broken. i'll upgrade when i get a job though. -my shoes are hand-me-downs from my brother. they're NSS shoes but they're from before they made it a capitol "N" and it's a wierd font so they look like they say "ASS" in big red letters. and they have burn marks on the inside and the sole is falling off. the material under the sole is literally rotting away. -my bed is just 3 $10 matrices stacked on top of each other from 1979 i despise modern cars. i hate the computer thermostat;, i fucking hate the automatic doors; i can't stand automatic transmissions; i don't like all the smooth curves and shinyness; and i hate all the features, saftey precautions, and luxuries. i want something i can modify, get dirty, and do whatever i want with. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |

Funny you should mention that. I felt the same way when I bought a DS lite. Sure it's nice and pretty, but trying to maintain that pristine quality is very impractical. You're gonna get your finger prints on it regardless. Thanks super gloss finish!
And the only reason why I'd prefer my old Cavalier to my Civic would be the rubber bumpers. I could hit anything and withstand any accident. Not that I'm a bad driver now, but starting out I was ._. Jam it back in, in the dark.

I only care about upgrading things when my previous gadget doesn't do what I want anymore at reasonable expectancy.
For the longest time I thought having a ton of cool gadgets would make me a cool person. BULL. SHIT. I tried it and all I did was successfully make myself look like a total nerdgeek. I fit my electronic gadget needs around how I want to project my self-image to others. I have a game consoles now I never play, a bitchin' digital camera, a RAZR phone, and 3 computers with very specific purposes. The RAZR was over the top for me and I don't really know why I bought it. I don't find too many of my old console games entertaining anymore so I don't play them hardly. A camera isn't what I'd call a nerd accessory, but I'm a photography nut now. The whole '3 computers' thing seems nerdy at first, but not until I explain their purposes. 1: A tiny HTPC. 2: A file server for maintaining clients' web sites and my movies/music. 3: My gaming rig made of pure nerd. :P I also own an older Chevy half-ton that I love to death. I love sitting high up and the amount of power it has. It's waaay more comfy than any new car you can buy because of the bench seat. Best of all, I've only spent $900 in repairs over the last 3 years and it has 360,000Km on it! It's built to last and I love the slightly rough ride it gives. I don't plan on getting a newer vehicle until I crash it. There's nowhere I can't reach. |

I too enjoy having cool gadgets. I have two iPods (a 4gb nano and a 60gb video), a tivo, fairly decent laptop, and other misc. items. I buy a lot of cds, though I still download (legally) a lot of music as well.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
The only thing I want to modernize in my lifestyle would be my computer and TV. I would love to have a HD or Plasma TV... my computer is quite decent, but I am planning on building a new one due to the things I like to do on my system, mainly video ripping and editing.

I prefer to travel by train rather than plane, whenvever possible. I usually end up flying instead, but I love to take the train when I visit my opera house.
I still pull out my NES system to play some of the old games. I know emulation is everything these days, but I still think that playing the game exactly as I did 17 years ago really brings back memories. Even the T.V. I use to play on has a dial tuner. Love it. Although my DVD collection is large, I still cherish my VHS tapes. Some of my stuff has not been released on to DVD yet (or ever will), so I can't dispose of them. Other tapes, I just don't feel like buying again on DVD, so eh. Until they disintegrate, I'll probably hold on to them. I was speaking idiomatically.

I don't always buy the best, I buy what I can afford.
I recently bought a Creative Zen, 4GB. My TV, phone, DVD player and PC are nothing that special, sure they do the job, but not as effectively as I would like. I also prefer to play my old consoles games on the consoles that they were designed for, not with Emulators and ROMs. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
