The crisis of bubblegum.

Not too long ago I went to a cheap grocery store (you know, the kind where you bag your own stuff) near my house and saw that they had some DVDs for a buck each. I expected them to be crap nobody cares about, but I managed to find something decent.

sorry it's so small.. I couldn't google anything better

The case looked pretty professional, aside from the huge honking DVD Multiplay logo in the top corner

Anyway, I watched the first episode the other day and enjoyed it very much. I did a quick search here and found that no other topics were created about this anime, so I figured I'd make one.

I know there's BGC 2040 as well. Is it a 'revamped' version of the original story, or something completely new? Are the characters pretty much the same? Which anime do you prefer overall? What are the chances I'll find the other DVDs of the original BGC for a buck each? I kid..

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I watched all of BGC 2040 and while the action was fun and the transformation of the city and aliens and such were mildly interesting and the biosuits awesome I found myself bored. Some of the characters were amusing but over all I found watching it more of a chore than entertaining.

Maybe the original series and the OVAs are better. There's also spin-off series like AD Police that I'd like to take a look at since those characters were much more interesting than the main set of heroes.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

when I first joined gff Bubblegum crisis 2040 was my first thread. This was three our four crashes ago ~_~
I loved 2040, I never completely watched the original but it looked nice from what I saw.
2040 was one of my favorite series but since I haven't watched it in like forever I already forgot the girls names ;_;
Obviously the best one was the tomboy badass with the bike

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

at least in BGC tokyo2040.
i like the series, but never had the chance to check the original ova, it also curious, i heard that 2040 is more a remake than a sequel.
its worth a check dude, and the dvds are pretty cheap.
in deepdiscountdvd.com i have seen them in about 12-15 eqch volumen (which contains 8-9 eps) which is good, and a remixed 5.1 soundtrack and a remastered video.
i have the original dvds and the music and voices are good, and the video was really clear.
its worth to check it:biggrin:

Wikipedia have a large entry for Bubblegum Crisis as well as for 2040 and other related series: Bubblegum Crisis at Wikipedia

I had never seen the original but heard a lot of good things about the series. Then I saw 2040 being shown on TV late at night so I just started watching that. The series was pretty interesting with quite a bit of comedy, drama and action thrown in. As I understand it, 2040 is pretty much a retelling of the original story, though I hear there were a few significant changes here and there. Quick link: Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 at Wikipedia

My favorite characters would have to be Sylia and Linna.

BGC 2040 was OK, it was enjoyable. The original on the other hand is an old-school 80's cyberpunk/action OVA complete with a horribly dated disco/rock soundtrack... so naturally it's going to be awesome.

I just wish they'd do a proper restoration or something. I picked up the 'remastered' box set and it still looked like crap, which is too friggin' bad because the animation is really, really good.

Yeah, the DVD I have suffers from the same problem. It's pretty 'jumpy', much like the original Neon Genesis Evangelion releases. But the 80's feel is awesome. I love that 'hurricane' song. XD;

The original version of BGM is my favourite from both animes. Having watched the original series on video a long time ago I was quite fortunate, but when they announced the new series of BGM I was still happy as I was able to see the genre being animated into a new show. Even though I knew the new series wouldn't be exactly the same, the new show held true to the BGM universe, but I still prefer the original series just because of the story and excellent animation.

How ya doing, buddy?

Is it just me, or AD police (TV version) has some of the worse, if not one of the most static animation work of its time? I really want to know what other series came out during that season so I can make some comparisons.

I haven't seen it myself but yes, it's somewhat infamous for not being very good.

Don't bother with BGC 2040 if you like the original.

Rather check out what Manga Entertainment back then put out as the "Cyberpunk Collection", which is AD Police, Genocyber and Cyber City Oedo 808.
All of those are pretty good IMO.
