Anno 1602 (Game Rip) - Ballad of Hope A nice tender, relaxing piece with some oddly militaristic moments. The melody is a little underwhelming at times, but it’s presented attractively, and the synth instrumentation works well, since it’s a poppish-style ballad in the first place.

Lost Files - Mysterious Story of the Island of Souls Part 4 My nomination. Hiroki Kikuta is great at melding pop and more traditional genres, and this track from his “Lost Files” compilation does just that. It combines an excellent, addictive piano part with atmospheric synths, drum kit, and even a little saxophone during the bridge. The result is a potent cocktail of melody and rhythm that’s suffused with Kikuta’s trademark quirkiness.

Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos (Game Rip) - Main Theme This tune is really let down by its synth, especially the triangle part that sounds very close to a pure sine wave. It’s not too interesting and rather simplistinc at the beginning, but there are some more complex parts later on. An arragned version would be a force to be reckoned with.

Symphonic Suite Dragon Quest Complete CD-Box - Satan (V) I can see why this box was never released in the USA, with a track title like “Satan” in there. While I normally warm to orchestral stuff, the arrangement here is very...stodgy, and kind of dull. Technically it’s fine, but I found myself tuning out even when I was trying to pay attention.

The Legend of Kyrandia (PC Game Rip) - Outside Brandon's Home Decent enough synth woodwind melody, but it didn’t really intrigue me. The later sections are a bit more interesting, though still kind of standard as far as this sort of thing goes.

The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (Game Rip) - Batland Castle Bouncy little SNESin’ tune that mixes melody, jazz. Not exactly a standout, but pleasant enough.

ToBi D+VINE Complete Sound Track - Fly! (arranged by Norihiro Furukawa) Impressively eclectic track with some nifty synth effects and a nicely synthy main melody. I was impressed with the buildup to the first melodic expression, and the synthiness kept me there for more. It drags a little bit in the middle, but remains interesting throughout.

WindAge - Oriental Dark Flight This starts out pretty much as trance, before developing more and becoming much more interesting as it progresses.

Nice week, with several tunes that were hovering on the edge of points.

The Point Spread
Lost Files - 3 pts.
ToBi D+VINE - 1 pt.
Ballad of Hope - 1 pt.
Outside Brandon’s - 1 pt.
Just Missed - WindAge

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Wow. WOW. This is an amazing week. One of the best ever, imo.

I'll start off with the song that had me listening to it 4+ straight times before going on to the next song -- Outside Brandon's Home. This is such a wonderful track. It's the epitome of pleasant. Honestly, this is the kind of song I could set on infinite loop and not get tired of.

Batland Castle - Neat little piece. It's cheery and upbeat, which I like.

Fly! - Another feel-good song that's enjoyable to listen to. Nice build-up to the modulation. I have to mention the neat toms part.

Oriental Dark Flight - Really cool feel to this song. It's got a good driving beat, with solid backing percussion parts. I wasn't expecting the electric guitar to come in about halfway through.

Ballad of Hope - Wow, this one's really nice. The snare drum is effectively used.

Satan - Haha, this is pretty cool. It may be unusual, but it's actually fun to listen to. Lots of neat stuff going on. Yay for timpani solos.

Mysterious Story... Part 4 - Yet another nice song. It's got a simple, enjoyable piano part and some good brass later on.

Main Theme - When I saw this nominated, I thought, "Huh?" I didn't remember there being this much to the song. Anyway, this is solid Follin -- enjoyable as always. It's a unique and interesting piece.

Talk about the hardest point distribution ever!

2 pts. - Outside Brandon's Home
1 pt. - Ballad of Hope
1 pt. - Mysterious Story... Part 4
1 pt. - Fly!
1 pt. - Oriental Dark Flight
So close! - Satan
Good, but not enough - Batland Castle, Main Theme

A big thanks to all the nominators for an excellent week. I won't be deleting any of these songs, which is certainly a rarity.

Oh hm, I'm up for another nomination. Must be time to start a very special miniseries of three tracks I call "Percussion Week Rejects." Not because Drakken denied them, since I only actually sent him one track to evaluate (and it was rightfully declined); these are tracks that I disqualified myself for various reasons.

I was going to nominate a track from Chaos Legion, but since it placed last week (<3), I'm forced to instead use the track I intended to nominate last in this group. I decided against pestering Drakken with it because I wasn't sure if hitting rodents with mallets counted as percussion (although given Dance With a Crocodile was allowed, it might have!).

I think this is the best week SotW has seen in quite some time. Even the weakest track is comparable to winners from other weeks. I get the feeling that nearly everyone brought out their big guns this week. That's how it should be every week, in my opinion.

Ballad of Hope - This is really sweet, very dreamlike. I can deeply appreciate the warm, cheery atmosphere it provides. Win or lose, I'll be holding onto Ballad of Hope.

Mysterious Island of the Island of Lost Souls Part 4 - This is another excellent nomination. The lighthearted piano is well-contrasted by the throbbing bass and syncopated percussion. The oboe/clarinet halfway through was a nice surprise. This track manages to be upbeat and interesting without being syrupy.

Main Theme - I love Solstice. In 1990, it was the top request on my Christmas list (I got it too). I nominated the Title Theme for "Follin Week" because I love the game so much. Follin is a pioneer whose body of work can be imitated but never duplicated. Yet, despite all these ticks in the "pros" slot, 'Main Theme' has always felt a tad sparse to me. In the game, it provides for some fantastic ambience. Out of the game, it's a mildly interesting listen, but it does get repetitive. Still, how many chiptunes can successfully pull off such ambience? It's a nice chiptune but it is unfortunately overshadowed by some very, very strong competition this week.

Satan - One thing I've noticed about some symphonic recordings is the deliberate use of echo to create the illusion of a grand playhouse. It's not something I care for personally. Aside from that complaint, 'Satan' is appropriately heavy-handed and aggressive. There's really no moment of peace during the track, only varying degrees of tension. Although the overall mood isn't of my preference, this is still a very successful track. Fans of moodier composition will thoroughly enjoy 'Satan'.

Outside Brandon's Home - Another soft, relaxed track. The panflute and piano synths are very enjoyable. The melody is somewhat subdued, compared to other tracks, but still prominent enough to matter. I didnt find myself as enthralled with Brandon's Home as others but you'll never find me saying it's a boring, undeserving track. There are days where this kind of music is precisely what I need.

Batland Castle - You know, I always wanted to play this game but never got my hands on a copy. I wonder if it's any good. The muddled nature of the SNES's soundchip is in full swing, as usual, but it's totally neutralized by a great combination of rhythm and melody. I was expecting something darker in mood, but this was a pleasant surprise. Now I've really gotta play Spike McFang.

Fly! - My nomination. Another feel-good track for this week too. I love the deep, involved progression used to lead into the main melody. The synths are airy and expressive. The melody is well-composed and memorable. There's a ton of variation, with numerous layers of sound that envelop the listener. And it's fun. Can't ask for much more than that. And yes, the tom-toms kick incredible ass.

Oriental Dark Flight - This track walks the fine line between being upbeat and dark. Yet it doesn't feel like it's of two minds. The progression is very natural, as the hastened tempo pushes the transitional elements through without causing them to feel disruptive. There's even a few moments of some rather emotional guitarwork, which felt refreshing after seven guitarless tracks. I think I like this one.

I seriously wish I had like eight or nine points to give out.

3 Points: ToBi D+VINE Complete Sound Track - Fly!
1 Point: Lost Files - Mysterious Story of the Island of Souls Part 4
1 Point: Anno 1602 (Game Rip) - Ballad of Hope
1 Point: WindAge - Oriental Dark Flight

I do believe this makes me eligible to nominate another track also.

Album: Snatcher>>Policenauts: Music Compilation of Hideo Kojima - Black Disc
Track: "Policenauts" End Title
Track Number: 18
Composer: Hideo Kijima, Kukeiha Club
Year:1998
Catalog Number: KICA-7888
Source: Chudah's Corner

This is probably the darkest nomination I've made so far. I felt like a momentary change of pace.

For my next nom, I'm going back to a game I nominated a song from way back when (which surprisingly didn't do so well). Instead of a nice cheery song this time, though, I'm selecting something a bit more off-key (heh).

Album: Pac-Man World 2 (Kutlass' game rip)
Track: Pinky's Revenge
Artist: David Logan Music, Inc.
Track: 18
Year: 2002

Source: Me
File Location: My comp.

It probably won't make the top 3, but eh, as long as some people enjoy it.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I can field this one. It's a cute little action-RPG intended mainly for kids (read: fairly easy and very short), but it's still enjoyable - somewhere between Kid Dracula and Kendo Rage, stylistically. Control's a bit odd (make absolutely sure to jump each time you attack, otherwise the game punishes you for spinning too much with a dizzy spell), and the text scroll sounds are probably the most annoying this side of Tactics Ogre PSX, but I like it. I pull it up every now and again when I get tired of brooding 30-hour epics. Try the ROM anyway, see what you think.

Oh, and an SPC set of the whole soundtrack (my very first dump!) can be found here. Lots of jazziness and upbeat stuff. Shame I can't find anything else by this composer, though.

P.S. The other piece from this soundtrack I was considering going with was Batland, in case you were wondering. Well, you probably weren't, but hey.

How ya doing, buddy?

Nice week. I have to agree on the understated quality (in a positive light) of many of these pieces.

(2 points) The Legend of Kyrandia (PC Game Rip) - Outside Brandon's Home
Pure gold. Would never imagine this to be a Klepacki track considering all the heavy-duty stuff he has done for Dune and C&C. There's a lot to like about this piece and it falls under the same umbrella as "Ballad of Hope" but more impactful and soulful. Love the development, too.

(2 points) ToBi D+VINE Complete Sound Track - Fly! (arranged by Norihiro Furukawa)
Another great song. Love the melody and the understated piano sections. "Chorus" bit was very well done, too. Overall, nice package that's satisfying.

(1 point) Lost Files - Mysterious Story of the Island of Souls Part 4
This certainly sounds like your classic Kikuta track but with some updates. The lovely piano melody betrays all. Quite reminiscent of Seiken Densetsu 3.

(1 point) Anno 1602 (Game Rip) - Ballad of Hope
This is kind of nice. The introduction is almost like a throwback to early 90s ballads. Very pleasant overall and, somehow, I keep imagining this track to be an instrumental version of a vocal song.

And the rest...

Symphonic Suite Dragon Quest Complete CD-Box - Satan (V)
Reminds me somewhat of "Rite of Spring" for some reason. Interesting orchestration and structure. I suppose this is what you'd call modernist music?

Solstice The Quest for the Staff of Demnos (Game Rip) - Main Theme
Intersting but I do think it is somewhat weaker than the first Solstice song that was nominated some time back. The melodic sections are pretty good though I'd have wanted more development. Nice enough structure, though.

The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (Game Rip) - Batland Castle
The most upbeat song of the week. And so very happy and cheery. I like the quirky melody and arrangement; nice change from the other songs this week. Unfortunately, I ran out of points because this was very close to getting one.

WindAge - Oriental Dark Flight
There's certianly a classic ZUN quality about this piece. Really interesting to finally hear a ZUN arranged track because I do think the arrangement does help flesh out the track more than is usual for ZUN pieces. But a tad more development would have been nice.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
I think therefore I am... I think.

Thumbs up

Just for the record, I run a website called Sierra Music Central (Google for it, not enough posts to URL tag it) and I recorded the LOK1 track- the OGG file in the extras is the original recording, converted from a WAV (i.e. better quality than the MP3 which has been reconverted).

And, if you want to be picky, it's not a 'game rip'. It's got different piano than the original audio for one. (Also got too much bass since I used a SB Live! to record it, but that's another story. )

It's also going to be replaced by a new version, I'm currently working on a complete LOK1CD, about 1/3 complete now (register at my forums [again, Google] and post today! ).

Anyway, I didn't come here just for that, I was a GFF member newbie not too long before the infamous crash, and never rejoined, although people keep telling me to. This provides a good excuse

Good to hear people like the track too, it's my personal favourite from the game.

Regards,
- Spike

Time to assign some points.

3 points - Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos (Game Rip) - Main Theme
2 points - ToBi D+VINE Complete Sound Track - Fly! (arranged by Norihiro Furukawa)
1 point - WindAge - Oriental Dark Flight

Yes, I'm probably a bit biased in giving my nomination the most points, but I absolutely love that song. I like it better than the title theme, I was never bothered by the triangle sound, I love the fact that is has some ambience for an NES song, but then has different layers of stuff going on later while still having the same feel.

Everything else this week was also either very good or awesome. I picked a bad week to try and push one of my favorites. Fly stood out just slightly above the other songs, and from 4th place onward, anything was up for grabs. Thanks to everyone who nominated for this week, I definitely enjoyed it. Too bad my own computer went kaput this week, I can't save any of these songs.

Hey, Alistair. Good to see you here. Thanks again for the excellent quality recording for the Kyrandia soundtrack. I'm eagerly awaiting the new cd. =)

As for this week, well what can I say. A very extraordinary week, as evident from my points spread, and each track had something that I liked. Pity there wasn't enough points to go around.

2 points: The Legend of Kyrandia (PC Game Rip) - Outside Brandon's Home
My nomination. I remember the first time I played the first Legend of Kyrandia, some 10+ years ago, just wandering around the forest outside of Brandon's treehouse, and becoming enthralled by the gorgeous settings while this particular, enchanting tune was being played. If there was ever a most pleasant, enchanting forest theme, this would be it. I'm glad most people liked it. Check the rest of the soundtrack (or better yet, grab the game for the full experience) for more of the same. Timbermist Woods, Speech of the Land and the Will-o-Wisp theme are among my favorites.

1 point: Anno 1602 (Game Rip) - Ballad of Hope
I actually liked Ballad of Hope, more so than Week 67's Dreamer. Very serene.

1 point: Lost Files - Mysterious Story of the Island of Souls Part 4
This track totally blew me away. Loved the main piano hook and brass hits, and the sax interlude was a beauty.

1 point: Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos (Game Rip) - Main Theme
I was quite surprised this was on the NES. It sounded like something out of the C64. Sweet medieval melody here, and quite atmospheric. This track was in my head for a few days after first listening to it.

1 point: WindAge - Oriental Dark Flight
I liked fast tempo and progression Oriental Dark Flight had. Plus the hectic piano parts were great.

Fly! was very cheerful and upbeat, but it just missed out. I ran out of points and I had to favor my nom with the extra point. Batland Castle was charming. I do like Batland a bit more. (And yes, I've played the game. Fun, if a bit on the kiddie side.) My least favorite this week was Satan (V). It sounded like a mix of menacing and dullness.

As for my next nomintation, I think it's time for another good chiptune. I'll be alternating between a chiptune and non-chiptune for the most part.

Well, I wouldn't say ALL Kirby music should be ineligible; I'd be perfectly fine with tracks from, say, Kirby's Block Ball, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, and Kirby: Canvas Curse, among others (discounting Staff Roll from KBB because of the BSC and the arranged versions of the well-known themes). KDL1-2, Kirby Super Star, and Kirby's Adventure are definitely out for me, and I'm guarded about KDL3 and Kirby 64 (i.e., I'd ask before nominating).

Kirby Air Ride is right on the obscurity line for me. Since SKY SANDS hasn't appeared in the BSC or anywhere as far as I know, I'm in favor of allowing it.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I was wondering about this as well. Kirby Air Ride's music is actually semi-popular. Like you said, I feel like it's right on the edge of what's allowable.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
Check out my original music at my Soundcloud page!

Latest music rips (updated January 10, 2012):

SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

Wow, now that there isn't too many nominators things are going really fast! Oh, and by the way, I'm in favor of letting Kirby tracks enter the contest. If you ask me, I think that Kirby music is nowhere as known as those of Rare (was this a correct sentence? :S).

Ok, now here goes my nomination:

* Album Title: Puggsy (gamerip thanks to Dubble)
* Artist: M. Furniss and S Hollinsworth
* Track Title: Star Fall Lake - 8th Stage

I'll upload it now

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman shall be allowed to participate in the film

Not so taken with the week as some, it's pretty decent though. There is in my eyes a clear winner.

3 points - The Legend of Kyrandia (PC Game Rip) - Outside Brandon's Home
1 point - Lost Files - Mysterious Story of the Island of Souls Part 4
1 point - WindAge - Oriental Dark Flight
1 point - Anno 1602 (Game Rip) - Ballad of Hope

Jam it back in, in the dark.

so they may learn the glorious craft of acting from the dear leader
