Dreamcast Love it or hate it?
The simplest question in the world, did you love it or hate it?
I, in fact, loved the Dreamcast.... I thought when the PS2 came out, the Dreamcast was the better system. Unfortuantly, it seemed like Saturn all over again when it discontinued.... I liked it because of the great games on it, and most of the games were pretty good. Jam it back in, in the dark.

DC lover. And I'm just shaking my head at Sega's decision to kill it. It could have been great competition... people were buying it! And it was definitly a system for skilled players, with it's unique processor that makes games harder the more you play it(think Tekken 5 if it was still around, or SCIII). A decent size like the Gamecube, and I liked the VMU interface.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
*Is now playing Chao Adventure on him VMU*
I hate to say it.... but I liked Sonic Shuffle *is shot* Yeah, it seemed like a really bad choice to kill the system, maybe Sega was planning a 'merger' with Nintendo all along, lolz. *Shot for conspiracy* Ow... Yeah, I loved the fun filled games in it... Power Stone, Power Stone 2, Fur Fighters, Ready to Rumble 2... Sonic Adventure 1 and 2... MDK 3, The whole Sega Sports line.... DAVE MIRRA FREESTYLE BMX...... I'd go on and on, but I'd drive myself insane with fun. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I love the DC, however it was no match for the PS2. People were burned by Sega, the PS2 had DVD playback, it had a large licensee backing, it had Madden, and it was more powerful.
I certainly didn't think it was that much more powerful at the time, but developers eventually tapped into it. A shame it died, but at least it happened. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Yeah, better for something to happen then not at all... Unless it's something bad, of course, lolz. Still I think the Dreamcast had an awesome Good game to Bad game ratio... A lot of games on the Dreamcast were hits.
I was speaking idiomatically.

The system was great. The games were pretty novel at the time. The problem?

That's why you should've bought the one I had... It had replacement LR Buttons above the ABXY button part...
Interestingly enough, I didn't have a problem with the controller that much... What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Most people who played NiGHTs into Dreams for the Saturn (and got the analog controller with their game) were already geared and ready to use that kind of controller on the Dreamcast, but it just really didn't flow too well with me when I played with it. For all intents and purposes, the Dreamcast controller to me at least is the worst of them all.
Most will tell you that it was the original XBOX controller before the S-series launched, but at least MS fixed that with the S-series quick enough. Jam it back in, in the dark. |

I didn't even hold a Saturn Controller till AFTER I got my Dreamcast. Still though, it was fun to hit my friends on the head when they were being cheap, lolz....

The Saturn controllers, especially the second design release that began when they started to give out the three free games with the Saturn purchase (at least as I know it in the US) was one of the sexiest controller designs I've ever had the pleasure of using. It worked with literally every game you played on the Saturn and it did it well.
Sega didn't do that for the Dreamcast though, which kinda sucked. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Since I only played PSO, Capcom vs. SNK and Grandia II on DC, the controller was alright for the most part. The N64 controller gets no love from me(except with Wave Race). The Saturn had a sad sad fate, this baby was released at the wrong time... still I will cherish the memories Virtue Cop and Panzer Dragoon gave me.
How ya doing, buddy? |
How can you hate the Dreamcast?
Of course here it didn't get much support, VMU's weren't released until 5 months after the console was released on the 4th of December, 1999. The whole online thing was quickly dismissed as well. That didn't bother me though, because Soul Calibur was amazing. This was the only console that I bothered to buy at launch along with Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure. And it still is amazing, actually. If you compare it to Tekken 4/5, Dead or Alive 3/4, it's aged very well. If Sega hadn't of pulled the console so soon I'm sure we would have seen more games, but that's all in the past now. The only games you'll see on the Dreamcast are shooters every 6 months. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Believe it or not, I've seen some people that HATE the Dreamcast A LOT.... I don't understand it, either...

The Playstation was nearing its end, and people were gearing up for the next generation which Dreamcast kicked off. The DC was only out for 15 months before the PS2 came out, yet it failed to gain enough momentum to counteract it. The PS2 sold like hotcakes, leaving the DC in the dust. Regardless, you can say Sony was dominating everyone. How ya doing, buddy? |
![]() Anyway, I'm a Dreamcast fan as well, even though I got burned paying $250 for it a whole six months before they decided to stop hardware production. The Capcom games on that thing alone were worth it, but Sonic Adventure? Grandia 2? Ikaruga? SWIRL? Hell yes. Jam it back in, in the dark. DAMN good coffee!

Oh and the flawless Master System emulator. :dopey_love: There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I liked the dreamcast quite a bit, but everytime I bought one the controller ports would just stop working and I didn't know how to fix them so the system just sort of died on me.
The games I remember playing most on that system was a game I bought soley for graphics at the time- Blue Stinger. I loved that game, I played it so damn much it was crazy, of course it got a bunch of terrible reviews but there was something about it that I liked. The graphics were good at the time, the controls were okay but it just made for a fun time. NFL 2K and House of the Dead II were also played a lot. How I miss those times. Now we have 2K5 and House of the Dead III with 2 combined into it so I shouldn't complain, but being 12/13 playing games like that at home was a dream. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() Take this keycard, you can unlock the doors in the hall with this. Now GO!...JUST go! A hero that lived long enough to see himself become the villain.

I loved mine for one reason: Fighting games. It's still the only console with a good home version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 (and 1, for that matter), the ONLY one with Project Justice, and it played host to Street Fighter 3 (the first and second ones actually haven't been ported to any other system), Capcom vs SNK 2, Guilty Gear X and several cool SNK fighters before they (or their various sequels) were ported to other systems or emulated competently. The Dreamcast Agetec stick is still my preferred fighting stick and I'm amazed the one I have has lasted as long as it has.
I personally never got much out of the rest of the DC's library. Skies and Grandia 2 were nice RPG's, it had some great arcade racers (Hydro Thunder was something I bought at launch), some cool arcade conversions (shmups, Cannon Spike, Crazy Taxi and Mr. Driller!) and Sonic Adventure was...decent at best. I mean, it was only around for about a year and a half, so it's unfair to base it off the PS2's library, but there was still the issue of the controller (WTF were they thinking?) and I would have liked to see some hint of the Sakura Wars games or even Segagaga. But overall, I understand the business decision of what happened...3rd parties gave up on the system once PS2 was out. It never sold well in Japan and pirated games effectively stopped it from ever turning a profit (since hardcore gamers were the system's core audience and probably the ones most knowledgable about making copies). It never had support from EA and Square. Basically, it got killed by the Sony hype machine and by lack of foresight on Sega's own designers (I don't see how Japanese gamers would have ever taken to the controller, given the massive size...And amazingly, Sega didn't learn a thing from the whole Sega vs Accolade mess). All in all, I got my money's worth and it was a decent run. It did succeed in making the PS2 look very bad at launch, as there was absolutely ziltch worth playing, compared to the relatively rich DC lineup. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?
I'm taking over this town...
I'm screaming for vengenace... I'm shouting at the devil... I'm not dead and I'm not for sale... Ain't lookin' for nothin' but a good time...

I liked DC for it's fighting games and Sonic Adventure 2 which, IMHO, is one of the best Sonic games to date just shy of StH2. The controller though, was a letdown, esp. with playing AHVB vs. Capcom 2 as Infernal Monkey put it. I was Magneto, using the claw method for Rom Infs, rendering the partner B button useless. The 2 games I picked up (like 95% of everyone else) when I bought the system was Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur a month after the system released. I thoroughly enjoyed Power Stone (2 was a little too overkill for me), Project Justice, Ikaruga, Alien Front Online, PSO, Shenmue I and II (imported from EU), KOF2002, Seaman (Leonard Nimoy ftw). Now that I think about it, I was suprised that the DC's 56k modem could handle heavy traffic from PSO, AFO, and even the 2K series...not only that, but VOIP as well with Alien Front Online. Was the Broadband Adapter ever released? You must've been a god among men if you had one of those.

DC ftw. Really enjoyed watching my brother play it, our television had really bad picture, but yup *thums up* from me

I loved my dreamcast. I loved playing shenmue 1 and 2 forr countless hours and awaiting news for a shenmue 3 ;_;.
Dreamcast was my party system, me and my friends would gather and play power stone, spawn demon hand, quake 3, doa and some other games I dont remember. The biggest problem with dreamcast other than the controller was when you popped in a game and then when it reads the disc it would make some very loud scratch noises. It didn't scratch my disc but it was like the dc needed glasses cause it was trying so heard to read them or something. I just put a pile of clothes on top of it (especially during the morning) to shut it the fuck up. Not for long though otherwise it would have overheated. I was saddened to hear that they gave up on it, so many dreams lost;-; Most amazing jew boots ![]() New Record! |

So many impressive games like Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue 2, Ikaruga - I still have my DC and my VGA adapter - maybe I´ll just hook it up to my monitor and play a round of Sonic Adventure 2. ![]() What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
Everything´s getting better.
Nothing´s getting good. |
I borrowed one off my cousin (he wanted my Playstation to host a Command & Conquer Multiplayer). I only played Sould Calibur on it, I quite enjoyed it at the time, but I have since played other games on the DC and wasn't all that interested in them or the console itself.
Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
