There really isn't a whole lot that's free and good and even somewhat easy to use. On Windows, it's basically Windows Movie Maker. On OS X, it's pretty much iMovie. Other than that, you're into open-source territory (the offerings of which are still either unstable, limited in capabilities, hard to use, or any combination of the three) or stealing commercial software.
There's nowhere I can't reach.
