Welcome to the Darkness - The first time I heard this song (and the rest of the Chaos Legion OST), I was like, . It gave me a feeling like no other vgm had. Seriously, I've never heard music like this in a game; it's amazing.

Chudah's Corner describes it as "rock with a gothic, almost medieval feeling combined with masses of demonic chanting." Whatever you want to call it, it's awesome, and I want more of it. I just recently purchased the game and am looking forward to hearing the music while playing it, even though the game itself is not supposed to be very good.

Endless Puzzle - Whoa, a Popcap Games song. There's something you don't see in SotW every day (er, every week). Unfortunately, it's nothing special, and very repetitive.

Floodlight - I ended up having to turn this song off at about 8 minutes in, because I just couldn't stand the same thing over and over again anymore. :aargh:

already settled down... - Ah, this is very pleasing to my ears, especially after Floodlight. Nice acoustic guitar piece. Wish I could give it a point. :-/

Eve - Very cool opening. The use of flute was unexpected. Regardless, this a solid rockin' track that will probably grow on me as I listen to it more.

Reynard Beach - Heh, one part reminds me of Dr. Wily Stage 1 from Mega Man 2; it's almost exactly the same. Decent song.

Excitement Central - Greenhorn - Heh, I like this song. It's a groovin' little piece.

Evildoer - Good rockin' song with a pretty cool main hook.

2 pts. - Welcome to the Darkness
2 pts. - Eve
1 pt . - Excitement Central - Greenhorn
1 pt. - Evildoer
Close - already settled down...
-50 million points - Floodlight

EDIT: Gave Evildoer a point instead of already settled down...

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Latest music rips (updated January 10, 2012):

SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

EDIT:
Chaos Legion OST - Welcome To The Darkness Stage This tune is a very interesting mixture of choir and techno/rock elements, and I found myself ejoying it quite a bit. I do wish the choir had been mixed a little louder, as it gets buried at times, but there are some moments of rare power on display here.

Dynomite (Game Rip) - Endless Puzzle A neat little tune that's very busy but manages to entertain despite having some trance-like elements. It actually has a definite Mega Man vibe to it, and the synthy melody is attractive.

Ridge Racer 6 (Game Rip) - Floodlight I agree with Drakken here; this song is repetitive as snot, and doesn't have enough variation to justify its length. I find that this is often the case with racing games, where the main function of music is often to keep silence at bay.

Scarlett OST - already settled down... Definitely seems settled down in a laid-back sense. It actually reminds me a lot of a track I ripped from You Don't Know Jack recently called "Udder Love" that was filled with double entendres about a man in love with his cow. This tune would probably be better if it had those, or any, lyrics, since it's kind of boring and elevatormusicish as is.

Shin Sangokumusou 3 OST - Eve I've heard this one before, though I can't imagine where it might have been. It starts out with wailing, repeated guitar chords, and then moves to wailing, repeated synth chords--blecch. The real tragedy here is that there's a beautiful, sensitive woodwind solo buried in the drek, like a rose growing from a compost heap.

Space Cowboy Online (Game Rip) - Reynard Beach Another fmiliar sounding track, though this could just be a case of loop reuse. It's a bit dull--I kept waiting for things to explode into an aggressively-presented melody, but they never really did. The arrangement and instrument choice is also very 1970's, which always vaguely annoys me.

Wario World (Game Rip) - Excitement Central - Greenhorn Heh, big blustery music is what I always imagined for Wario, and this tune doesn't disappoint. It's got some nice jazziness in the piano and brass performances, but is still structured enough to me cohesive. I can just see Wario at a smokey desk, recieving supplicants, while this is playing.

XANADU NEXT OST - Evildoer Certainly not the Olivia Newton-John Xanedu your parents grew up with. This has Falcom's fingerprints all over it, but is a lesser effort--all the drum kit ruckuss and wailing guitar lead diminish it for me--I much prefer when the axe is a supporting instrument. and don't get me started on the awfulness of the noodling later one--blech.

Nice week, all things considered, and very easy point distribution for me.

The Point Spread
Chaos Legion - 2 pts.
Dynomitte - 2 pts.
Wario World - 2 pts.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I know you like the choir stuff, so if this track tickled your fancy, you might want to check out the rest of the album, since most of the tracks are in a similar style and have the choir in at least a backing role. Of note are the boss themes, choir of curse and The drones of hell, which feature "OH CRAP YOU'RE ABOUT TO DIE IN AN EXTREMELY PAINFUL AND DRAMATIC MANNER" escape chanting.

I just gotta pimp this out because I <3 this album.

Probably because it appeared waaaaaaay back in Week 9.

Speaking of which, there was a slight discussion two weeks ago about this, but nothing really happened. There are really two issues here:

1). Should we allow tracks to be renominated?
Renominating tracks that have placed should definitely be disallowed (in my opinion), but how about tracks like EVE, which did not place in its week almost two years ago? No one seemed to remember that it had been here already, so is its reappearance such a bad thing?

2). If so, how long should the delay be between renominations?
Two years is a bit on the long side; I think any delay should be shorter than that. But how much so? 1 year? 12 SotW weeks, like the delay is for albums which have a first-place track?

I actually remember Welcome To The Darkness Stage from the Super Mario: Blue Twilight demo vid. It's a fan game with not too good gameplay and awesome bosses. I'm pointing this out because I can't go an entire listen without thinking of it, so my in context experience is completely screwed up.

Also, this week sucks.

Edit: Link fixed.

As the renominated track seems to be doing fairly well (and I forgot all about this issue before awarding points), it stands to reason that there may indeed be redemption for tracks that had previously been passed over.

However, I feel like 12 weeks is too little of a statute on renomination. That comes out to roughly 3 months. Maybe 24 weeks (6 months) is a fair waiting period, long enough so as not to feel like that track's being forced into victory, and long enough for it to feel fresh again.

Also, one renomination should definitely be the limit.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

One renomination limit and 24 weeks between renominations sounds good to me.

Double Post:
A one renomination limit with a 24-week waiting period sounds good to me.

Seconded; check it out. The Drones of Hell is my favorite; I was considering nominating that instead of Welcome to the Darkness Stage but figured the latter was "safer." Drones of Hell is so awesome, though.

EDIT: Ooh, A Way to Nowhere is really good, too. I especially like the parts where it goes back and forth between guitar/strings and drums/choir. There's also a really nice piano instrumental on the OST's 2nd disc.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Since I didn't notice anything more than a vague feeling of deja vu when listening to the renominated track, my opposition has slackened a bit. I still think that anyone who untintentionally renominated should be notified, and that renomination should be discouraged even when it's permissible.

As for a statute of limitations, it should be however long SoTW's collective memory is--probably months at the very least.

3 Points: Space Cowboy Online (Game Rip) - Reynard Beach
2 Points: XANADU NEXT OST - Evildoer
1 Point: Dynomite (Game Rip) - Endless Puzzle

Overall, every song was a enjoyable listen. My nomination is one of my fav songs of all time, so it would take something amazing to beat it. Evildoer came a tad close though...

EDIT: My next nomination shall be!

Album: Tekken Tag Tournament Direct Audio OST PS2 (The arcade tracks are a little different)
Track: Ogre's Theme
Track #: 11
Composer: Namco Sound Team (Don't know if any person in particular is responsible for this track, but it found this list of names Akitaka Tohyama, Yu Miyake, Nobuyoshi San, Keiichi Okabe, Rio Hamamoto)
Additional Notes: I can upload it to the FTP if needed. I don't really know if everyone has really heard this track much, but if you guys think it shouldn't be allowed, I'll change my nomination.

2 points - Ridge Racer 6 (Game Rip) - Floodlight
Before Dragongod nominated it I was planning to nominate "galactic life" from the same album. It can be a little repeatitive (not too much compared to others in the genre), but I love how it "sounds". It's more or less calm but never gets boring, a great track to hear while browsing the net ^^

3 points - Scarlett OST - already settled down...
Well, this is my nomination. I usually nominate much faster songs, but in this case I made an exception as I think that the melody is fairly decent. Overall not a very spectacular track, but at least worthy of a mention

1 point - Space Cowboy Online (Game Rip) - Reynard Beach
It sounds Outrunish at the beginning and the rest of the song isn't too bad. It isn't the most original song in the world, but it works pretty well for me.

1st: Shin Sangokumusou 3 OST - Eve
My best song of the week. Love the rocking, the riffing and the flute/woodwind solos. Good thing this was renominated.

2nd: Ridge Racer 6 (Game Rip) - Floodlight
I don't mind the fact that this track keeps repeating itself (I found Endless Puzzle to be more repetitive), but it got some cool trance-like qualities and takes you places.

3rd: Space Cowboy Online (Game Rip) - Reynard Beach
Quaint, little melody. Liked the several different instumentations throughout.

Welcome To The Darkness Stage just missed out, despite my liking to gothic themes. The choirs needed to be more pronounced. The rest was alright, though these three were the best in my books.

I didn't enjoy too much this week. Only a couple of the tracks really interested me.

2 points - Dynomite (Game Rip) - Endless Puzzle
2 points - Ridge Racer 6 (Game Rip) - Floodlight
1 point - Scarlett OST - already settled down...
1 point - Shin Sangokumusou 3 OST - Eve

At first Eve was only borderline for receiving points, but then that flute came in and won me over.

I'll make a nomination first before going into voting proper:

* Album Title: Farland Symphony: Encore (PC Game Rip)
* Artist: KOTOKO
* Composer: Takase Kazuya
* Track Title: Wing My Way -Short Version-
* Source: http://www.web-giga.com/tgl/fs/_fs_top.htm; http://www.mognet.net/artisttranslat...nslation=kanji
* Disc Number: NA
* Track Number: NA
* Catalogue Number: NA
* Year: 2002

My nomination is a vocal song (with real Japanese singing! ) that plays alongside the game's opening anime-like sequences. Not quite sure what kind of game Farland Symphony is since I don't have it. In any case, the track should get inflicted with instant death status effect when it debuts later down the road. :P

My votes for this week:

(3 points) Ridge Racer 6 (Game Rip) - Floodlight
Too cool and sleek to pass up. This one beats everything this week for me, never mind that it doesn't seem to develop much.

(2 points) XANADU NEXT OST - Evildoer
Very nice melody and instrumentation. This one came up tops for me for being very tight.

(1 point) Scarlett OST - already settled down...
Very soothing and nicely laid-back, with a pleasant melody to make my day.

The other tracks this week were pretty interesting. Chaos Legion came fairly close to getting points.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
I think therefore I am... I think.

After listening to them non-stop for 4-5 times, I mostly went by memorability this time.

Ridge Racer 6 (Game Rip) - Floodlight - 2 Points
This had me thought of a shooter immediately. But it's the famous racing game, still I had strongs visions of a shooter in mind. It's a bit repetitive and drawn out though.

Scarlett OST - already settled down... - 2 Points
All I remember was that it had some nice instruments and a soft atmosphere. Kinda good somehow.

Wario World (Game Rip) - Excitement Central - Greenhorn - Deux Points
For some reason, the wackiness wins here. Some hot piano action as well.

The others? They were ok, nothing bad.

I'll guess I throw in my next nomination, another track from Anno 1602:

Title: Ballad of Hope
Album: Anno 1602 (Game Nip)
Track No: 1
Composer: Markus Pitzer (Dreamweaver)
Year: 1998

(3 points) Scarlett OST - already settled down... - Had both quality and quality, which something the others tracks lacked. The melody was smooth, laid back, and enjoyable and the composition was top notch.

(2 Points) Space Cowboy Online (Game Rip) - Reynard Beach A serious action piece that manages to have the best melody of the bunch this week. Sadly it is over far too quickly.

(1 Point) - XANADU NEXT OST - Evildoer - A sexy, driving rock piece that delivers a solid melodic development and great composition.

(Runner Up) - Ridge Racer 6 (Game Rip) - Floodlight - Had the potential to earn points, but was simply too long and underdeveloped to earn any.
