RAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM WRYYYYYYYYYYY
Hi I have 2gb of RAM, 4x512mbbbbbsxsss
My computer hangs like a motherfucker and has been doing it since I got it over a year ago, but it does it sporadically. It happens several times a day, and sometimes not for two days on some boots. But it gets on my nerves when it crashes over and over again, and when it restarts it may quickly crash again before windows is even fully ready to go. I've reformatted and reinstalled windows several times so it leads me to think that I have a RAM problem. Do any of you nerds out there share my diagnosis? I'm currently doing a RAM swap test as we speak having taken all but 1 stick out, but I just wanted to check if I should do this quickly giving it maybe an hour between replacing each stick should be enough to make her go arse over tit. Well... basically would it be a thorough enough to fuck around a bit on each RAM stick to see if it crashes immediately, or should I put each one through a longer and more rigorous test period? advice/comments/suggestions? My computer is very fast and very sexy, but the crashing thing totally gets on my nerves to the extent that it completely disrupts any internetting or anything else I'm doing on it. thx in advance <3 Jam it back in, in the dark. |
If you Overclock, then you might have set it too high. If not, a good way to test RAM is to google for Memtest. Let it run for a bit and if it doesn't show any errors in the RAM, your RAM is fine and something else is faulty.
EDIT: I found it for you...http://hcidesign.com/memtest/ There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Could you post your motherboard make and model?
What brand of RAM are you using? I believe that there are quite a few motherboards that can't really handle using 4 RAM sticks at the same time. Sure they support it, but it's not stable. Other options are: your RAM is bad, or your RAM is running too fast for the amount of sticks your have. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Before you start throwing your RAM in the bin, try testing it for a few hours using this:
http://www.memtest.org/ The 86+ version is supposed to be more thorough than the 86 version, although you have to boot from a floppy to get it to work. If you can't stably run Windows then this is useful and rules out other causes for freezing such as Windows driver errors etc. Otherwise you probably have some poorly seated hardware or a faulty/underpowered PSU. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8IPE775-G
and the RAM is 4x Veritech 512DDR I'll somehow find a floppy disc tomorrow and give that a shot. Thanks for your suggestions, I'll post more when I have more evidence 8-) I was speaking idiomatically. |

You can also download the minimal install disc of the gentoo distribution. The bootloader lets you select memtest86. Great for the people who don't have a floppy anymore.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Easiest possible solution is to test that RAM with MemTest like others have said. Most amazing jew boots |
I've actually never heard of Veritech....Did these come with the computer or did you get the somewhere else?
BTW, the memtest that I use doesn't require a floppy, just as long as you can get to windows and have it stable long enough to check. By the way, What's your PSU? What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |

I tested the RAM and it seems to be fine, but concerning the power supply I did some tests. Does anybody know how to read this and if it looks normal?
VCore1: 1.26V VCore2: 2.58V +3.3V: mean 3.24 +5V: mean 3.58 +12V: mean 11.82 -12V: mean -5.40 (drops to around -2 -0.something constantly) -5V: mean -1.93 (drops to -0.something a lot) +5V: mean 4.39 VBAT: 4.08V I don't know anything about these but shouldn't those figures be closer? There's nowhere I can't reach.

yes!!
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
Those figures don't look right to me. I would definatley try a new power supply
The values really shouldn't be that different from the base so +5v should be around 4.5-5.5 and that is still streaching it. Yeah, your voltage drop is too huge. New PSU is in order definitely.
