What's a good single-player FPS game?

I have Unreal Tournament: GOTY Edition burned somewhere and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and I tried out UT2003 or was it 2004? I don't remember, it came out around the same time Doom 3 did, I think. But the single-player missions (if you can even call them that, lol) are severely lacking, the Wolfenstein game was decent, but it got old, quick, especially after I beat it. Can anyone recommend to me some good single-player FPS games that have a good story and decent graphics (preferably ones I can get for free *cough* piracy *cough*)?

And before you say Doom 3, my computer isn't good enough to handle it. I have a pretty shitty graphics card and don't have the money to shell out to get one of those top-end cards that cost $300 plus. Using the system requirements test page (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest), here are my computer specs. Taking a screenshot to make it easier for me (I used Doom 3 as the bench).

I didn't have a very keen graphics card when I played Doom 3 and I still enjoyed it. At this point, you'd probably only need to shell out 150 to 200 dollars to get a card that'll run Doom 3 with decent performance and imagery.

That said, I'd wholeheartedly recommend getting Sin Episodes: Emergence off of Steam if you haven't played Sin before, as the original game comes bundled with it. Otherwise, it depends on how much you really want to shell out 20 dollars for 6 hours of gameplay. Then again, I did pay 20 bucks for a Dark Crystal DVD.

Anywho, it's a pretty freaking awesome 6 hours, so think about it.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Dues Ex & Unreal 2 (heaps of people missed this game, its fantastic!). Played through and enjoyed both back when my system was a mere Athlon 1.4c with a GeForce Ti4200.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Deus Ex definitely takes some getting used to, though. It wasn't for me, but I hope Bioshock will appeal a bit more.

Aliens vs. Predator 2 has an excellent single player campaign, because it's actually three campaigns in one. You can play the marine version (obviously the easiest to identify with, and probably the best), the predator version, or the alien version. All three classes in the game have different aspects about them that make them pretty interesting to play. I can't stress enough the basic fun factor of having your pants scared off of you. (or of dropping stealthily down on top of a marine and headbiting him)

Plus, when you get done, the multiplayer is a real blast, although I imagine you'd have trouble finding a server nowadays.

FarCry has some great single player action, especially in the human vs. human battling. You really feel like you outwit these guys sometimes, rather than feeling like you've somehow cheated the AI. Make sure to turn on dynamic difficulty, though, or your trip can be a painful and frustrating one, especially in the last few levels of the game.

There's also Call of Duty 1 & 2, if you haven't gotten around to playing them yet. Call of Duty 2 can also run in Direct X 7 mode, which is a real system saver.

For a more tactical/more serious approach, you could go the route of Rainbow Six 3, or Swat 4, which are similar, but both good in their own rights.

If you like OOOLD games, then I suggest you try Dark Forces. Great FPS with a Star Wars theme. If story doesn't concern you, then get Duke Nukem 3D. It's just fun, hee hee.

Quake 4 is pretty good for a single player story. And It's pretty fun too. You do need a graphics card though. For about $120, you can get what I have, a 6600GT and be able to play most games decently. Then again, you could wait for a major overhaul later. I'm just saying 6600GT will suffice much of your gaming needs.

Deus Ex and System Shock 2 would be my recommendations, although I've never got the latter to run properly since upgrading to Windows XP.

The Original Half-Life, its expansions, Quake II, Deus Ex, Half-Life 2, Call of Duty, CoD: United Offensive, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Battlefield 1942 and its billion expansions.

Once you upgrade your Video Card, there's the flock of Doom 3 Engine Games (D3, its expansion, Quake 4, PREY), Hitman: Blood Money, Deus Ex 2 (not as good as the first but still a decent game), F.E.A.R, Farcry (I hate the game but a lot of people like it), and Call of Duty 2 (My favorite Single-Player FPS in all of history, even beating out the original Doom).

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Call of Duty--damn good mention. You should be able to run that game with flying colors. I ran it almost full on an Anthlon XP 2000+ with a GeForce 2 MX 32MB.

I second System Shock 2 and Deus Ex. They have more adventure/RPG mechanics to them than just shooting, but they're still excellent games. Half-life and Half-life 2 probably have some of the better single-player campaigns out there, so those should be your first stop I think. F.E.A.R. is another one to look for when you eventually upgrade your videocard.

Also, your videocard will actually run Doom 3. I'm not sure why it says it won't run it, granted it won't be the smoothest, but I played it on a Geforce 3 and it was quite playable on low settings. Other Doom 3 engine games like Prey and Quake 4 are a bit more questionable, they push the engine quite a bit farther and it would likely get much more choppy in places. You can get a pretty decent videocard for around $100 though, sure it's not top of the line, but it would be able to play pretty much any current game at medium-high settings. The rest of your system is up to speed, so you'd see a big improvement since it's your videocard that's holding you back at this point.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter has a great single player mode that I really enjoyed (it is an old game though). Yes the story was practically non-existant, but First Person Shooters were never about the story, they were (and still are) all about good, wholesome, mindless action.

fear is really good as 1 player and sucks as multi player unless you have a faster computer than everyone else. if your computer is below 3.0GHZ and internet connection less than 1mps, you will get slaughtered cause other players move faster. anyways in one player mode, its fun you get slowmo and you get a nail guy. you shoot that nail gun and make people get stapled in the walls and they are hanging bleeding and dead.

Why the hell did only ONE person say Half Life 2?!? That is what you must play next. End of argument. And once you're done playing that, Go play HL2: Episode One. Then get pissed off that HL2: Episode Two hasn't come out yet, and bite your fingernails anxiously anticipating the awesomeness that await's that package release.

To kill some time until then, Prey is worthwhile. Basically any Quake with crazy spactial trasitions.

Yeah, play Episode 1 and feel like Valve sucker-punched you for 20 dollars worth of incremental story development.

Brady, if it's 20 dollers worth of incremental story development, and you pay 20$, what's the problem?

The original DOOM is always kick-ass (exspecially when it's The Ultimate DOOM). If you want jumping and mouselook, use ZOOMGL, it lets you run DOOM with 5.1 and widescreen. The Ulitmate DOOM Episode 4 is easily one of the best examples of great level design and a great challange (in Ultra-Violence).

Naaaah, he oughta check out Episode 1. Now that has great level design and an awesome atmosphere. Then again, that whole atmosphere part maybe the nostalgia factor for me .

As for source ports with jumping and mouselook, there's a whole shitload of them. There's ZDoom, Doom Legacy, EDGE, Skulltag (which is also a multiplayer port). As for Open GL stuff and the likes, there's always Risen3D and JDoom.

Soldier of Fortune 1, pure fun hands down.

Serious Sam, The Second Encounter, great fps, lots and lots of monsters.

These two are one of my favourite FPS's of all time.
