Pokemon - The New Dub

For anyone that doesn't know yet: 4Kids no longer has anything to do with the Pokemon and will no longer be dealing with the series in any form or fashion. Pokemon USA - Nintendo's branch of dealing with the franchise has taken over all aspects of it and as of today on CN, the new dub (starting at the Battle Frontier season) premiered.

Honestly...it's not that bad.

Supposedly its been getting good reviews with just 1-2 days out. For those that don't know - thanks to a rather underhanded clause in the 4Kids contracts which nobody caught on to, none of the original voice cast for the major characters are allowed to reprise thier roles in the new dub, so Ash, Max, May, Brock, Jessie, James, and Meowth all had to be recast. However - minor voice cast members should be allowed to reprise thier roles. The original narrator (from when the show first premiered) is back.

The voices take some getting used to but the general concensus is that the scripts are a lot better. Theres actual silence instead of music all the time, jokes arent spouted out randomly every two seconds. The only drawbacks seem to be James (who sounds more like a depressing raging homosexual than he ever did), Jessie (who sounds a bit more like a valley girl), and Meowth (who's VA really needs some work in getting the role better. The voices take some getting used to, but its not as ear grinding as the DBZ voice changes. From what I'm hearing there's even some of the original Japanese music sprinkled in with the American soundtrack.

Overall though, its still the same old Pokemon (stand alone stories, periods of filler, no heavy storytelling), but in terms of presentation it just kinda feels a little bit better in terms how certain aspects of the show are handled. Its amazing how shows no longer under 4Kids seem to morph instantaneously. :P

Anyway, does anyone else who's seen it have any opinions on it?

This may explain why, when I caught the show briefly a little while ago, Ash sounded weird. Even if the voice-acting is as good or possibly better, I don't like change. In real life, people's voices don't just change. Thus, the show has a lost a bit of its realism. I don't want to watch anymore, now...

Same here. I've enjoyed watching all those original pokemon all the way until mating pokemon and more than "150" pokemon got a little too carried away afterwards. Its not even funny like it used to be. I dont watch it. The dub is average and still, i had no problem with the original voice casts from the start.

The anime got so boring to the point where the creators went and drew jesse and james, they just threw them in there with a different color. Now what does that tell you? Either way, If there's ever an episode when Gary's around. I might just watch it again. I mean.. that was another main point for Ash to do other than being the Pokemon Master. That being said.. He now has to collect 1000000000 more pokemon.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Did the voice-acting change for Pokémon Chronicles? It seems the same, but, then again, the episodes may have just been dubbed before the shift in production.

All of Chronicles was dubbed prior to 4Kids getting the boot. I think it premiered in the UK last year and is only just now going through its run in the states.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Hmmmm... makes me wonder if there is a fansubbed version of the original show.

However, I wouldn't mind hearing the new cast. The only voices I really cared about were Team Rocket's and Brock's. The rest I couldn't give a shit about.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

I'd like to see fansubs of this. I watched the animated series back when it was brand-spankin' new. There were a number of funny pictures I saw on the internet, which were removed in the US release (ie: "James" cross-dressing. One episode had him in a bikini with some busty fake implants =p Looked hilarious).

I knew James is gay, he cross dresses all the time. Well besides that, I watched an episode recently, and I thought they were finally changing the character's ages. It did sound a bit better, I hope they let up on the american editing, and let James have his bikini and implants!

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I watched this one video on YouTube where someone juxtaposed the old and new voices for each character. It was somewhat creepy.

Eh... I don't watch the show as "religously" as I used to. Like chato, I kinda before it went past 151 monsters and mating, etc... I was done after Yellow (or that picture-taking one for N64, whichever was later).

Jam it back in, in the dark.
