Percussion Week! Here's a note from Drakken, the organizer:

"This week features percussion-oriented tracks. So, I encourage you to evaluate the songs in terms of how well percussion is used, how much percussion is used, and so on (basically, evaluate it with percussion in mind). Of course, you're free to judge them however you like; just keep in mind the purpose behind these tracks.

"That doesn't mean you should regard an otherwise bad song as good just because of the percussion, though."

Hopefully orion_mk3 won't mind me stealing his thread, but I wanted to get this up without any further delay.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

OH SNAP you guys actually accepted Spray <3

But I want to know exactly what happened to Elorin's nomination... I know a minor popularity issue was brought up, but... was it serious enough to warrant a replacement? I don't want to intrude on anything.

Dr. Uzuki raised the valid point that there were something like 6 Musashiden II tracks in BSC. Elorin then offered to withdraw his nom in favor of someone else's if it was indeed too well-known. I'd have to say with that many songs in BSC this year, Musashiden II is not exactly SotW material anymore.

No problems.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I must admit to having reservations about a "Percussion Week", as there runs a risk of having too many tracks that are relatively devoid of melody. I was asked to submit a nomination, which I did, but it was rejected, which is fair; I'll just submit it as my own in the future.

Chocolate Outline - This is the kind of track that appeals to me, yet makes me wish it had a little more oomph. The sounds are quite pleasant and they flow into each other well. The pacing could be a bit faster for my tastes; I don't think it would've hurt the piece to pick the tempo up a half-step. The low-key approach makes for a nice introduction but after some time, the meandering rhythm gets a little weary. It's still enjoyable despite that, however.

ChaosField Soundtrack - spray-boss - This is a bit of what I was afraid of: techno-like beats that exist for no other reason than to create a track with little to no melody. Effective for a mood within a game, yes, but out of context it feels more distracting than appealing.

Complex Thoughts - I've known about this track for a long time. It was never one that occurred to me when considering SotW nominations. Not that it's bad - I don't mind it at all - I just wish I'd thought to nominate it when I was approached. Interestingly, this one has always reminded me of Super Metroid's music in some places. I've never isolated the reason. But yeah, nice track and the percussion is potent without becoming distracting.

Dance With A Crocodile - As soon as the animal-like jungle noises came on, I knew this was gonna be fairly interesting. And had they done their thing for about thirty seconds or so, that would've been awesome. But the presence of monkeys, birds and frogs throughout the entire piece, that was almost ear-rape in a way. If there was more variation in the rest of the sound, this could've been minimized. Sadly, a cool intro device winds up being overused and the charm is lost.

Kiss Twice - I've always been fairly ambivalent toward the general ambience found in Koudelka's music. It's neither annoying nor enthralling. Kiss Twice is one of the better tracks, thankfully, as the castanet-like clicking and the gentle drums create a soothing effect. The tambourine is pretty and the flutes are pretty nice. It does bear a bit of that "generic Asian music" feel, but I'm not truly against that, having nominated the same style myself. Not an amazing track, Kiss Twice, but a pretty solid one nonetheless.

Beachway - Well, the percussion is plainly evident. Too bad that's about all the song has to offer. Beachway feels far too underdeveloped to earn any points from me.

Ruthless - This track suffers from a lot of the same problems that "-spray- boss -" does. It's a lot of percussive noise with little else. Now, I know the purpose of this week is to highlight percussion in VGM but this kind of atonal sound doesn't work for me, personally. Those tracks that successfully blend strong percussion and interesting melodies, that's more of what I was hoping to hear out of Ruthless. The beginning was decent, but it just became frenetic and kinda pointless after the first ninety seconds.

Techno Rave - There's more variation in how the percussive elements are used here. To some degree, they even function melodically, though not exceptionally so. The genre of Techno Rave's not particularly my thing but I don't hate this track either. It's good at what it does and doesn't make a lot of mistakes within its preferred environment. Solid.

Point Spread:

3 Points - Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts
2 Points - Koudelka - Kiss Twice
1 Point - Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline

Impressions: I think this week was a little hit-and-miss. There was definitely percussive elements to each nomination, but some of them only served to illustrate that it often takes more than just a strong drumline to make a track work.

If I'd had my druthers, and if it had any chance of getting through the censors, the ideal track for this week would've been "Eternal Arcadia OST - Kingdom of Ixa'taka". I feel that track represents a very successful blend of aggressive drums and percussion toolkits, while maintaining a very strong melody and an exciting pace. Of course, there's no way it would've been considered "obscure", which is why I couldn't submit it. But that's the sort of standard I was hoping to hear.

Percussion Week was an interesting experiment, but in all honesty, nothing I'd like to see repeated.

Sorry for causing undue delay. Thanks Drakken for the successful swap. A little bit sad the Temple crumbled but it's okay with the Boss taking over. Plus I imagine most of you would have heard of the Temple before. Hopefully, you guys will enjoy Percussion Week and realise there's more to music than just melody. :P

Some comments before I go to bed with hopes of greeting work at my desk tomorrow. *sigh* Very good week, actually (meaning voting will be really tough). It's certainly a refreshing change. Thanks to Drakken for organizing this themed week.

(2 points) Koudelka - Kiss Twice
Very hard to turn this away. It's classic Kikuta complete with a beautiful, atmospheric melody and great fluid percussion. Easily one of the best tracks for me this week.

(2 points) Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline
Love this. It comes across as being more ambient than percussive but that's all and well for me since I really like the ambience in the song. It's also nice how some of the percussion actually helps add to the ambience (e.g. the bell/chime). Understated for the win.

(1 point) Maple Story - Beachway
Deceptively simple and very effective at the same time. Plus it has bucketfuls of quirkiness. Another win-win combination for me.

(1 point) The Incredible Machine 3 - Techno Rave
This is very, very neat. Possibly one of the better songs in term of percussive merits alone. It's a very tight and catchy song that develops enough to keep me interested.

And the rest...

ChaosField Sound Track - spray -boss-
Nice and fairly complex rhythmic work there. It's one of the more percussive tracks this week and certainly catches my attention enough to want to award it a point. But I'm all out.

Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts
Somewhat akin to "Chocolate Outline" but with a stronger lead melody. But admittedly, the percussion and ambience, though rather nice, aren't quite the best. Still, the track was very close to getting a point from me.

Konami All-Stars 1993 ~ Music Station of Dreams - Dance With a Crocodile
Very interesting. This track actually uses animal sounds as percussive instruments. Melody isn't too shabby either.

Splinter Cell 3 Chaos Theory Soundtrack - Ruthless
Another very interesting song. The distortion and modulation are very neat. Add the strong rhythmic beats and you have potentially the most percussive track this week. So based solely on percussion alone, this would certianly be my Song of the Week. But with all other things considered, it doesn't quite have the catchiness of "Techno Rave" and falls a bit short as a result.

How ya doing, buddy?
I think therefore I am... I think.

Chocolate Outline: fucking awesome as fucking hell, especially the first half a minute. I would love the song even more if it was completely ambient, without the strings. Either way, though, I think this track might become the winner this week.

Ruthless. Amon Tobin rocks; his Stoney Street from Bricolage is one of my favourite songs ever, not only in the ambient category. This song here, though, could benefit from a catchier melody. It's still good, though; I like it.

Complex Thoughts and Kiss Twice are both great. Kiss Twice seems to be more complex (ironically) and interesting, but I love the instruments used in Complex Thoughts, as well as the general feel of the song. It's hard to say which one of these I like more.

I like the other songs as well, maybe with the exception of Dance With a Crocodile, which is simply too fast for my taste, and Techno Rave, which is too techno.

3 points: Chocolate Outline
2 points: very tough choice, but Complex Thoughts just barely wins, because Kiss Twice will probably get enough votes without my help
1 point: Ruthless

All in all, great-great-great week. Four of these songs will definitely be looped on my Winamp for hundreds of times, and the other four aren't half bad either.

This week is a lot tougher than the previous week. Nothing really stands out far and above the other songs, or falls short of everything else. Everything is fairly evenly matched.

2 points - Koudelka - Kiss Twice - Well, I said nothing stood out above the rest, but if anything does, this would be it. It has a very nice melody, and some diverse percussion. I especially like the part starting at 1:50. A lot of the wonderful things in the song came from the wind and string instruments in addition to the percussion, though it's still a very wonderful song with good percussion.

2 points - Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts - I definitely heard the resemlances to Super Metroid music that Crash heard in this. The mallets provide a wonderful melody throughout the piece, and the other percussion blends in perfectly with the rest of the song. A good track from a series I usually don't enjoy so much.

1 point - Splinter Cell 3 Chaos Theory Soundtrack - Ruthless - This track is relying pretty much solely on the percussion for everything. And though I've never played the game, I can definitely feel the atmosphere it creates. I liked all crazy drum work in the middle of the song too. It earns a point.

1 point - The Incredible Machine 3 - Techno Rave - This sounds like what it says it is. A lot of repetition, and a lot of building on things. Lots of stuff going on, and like the voice sample in the song says, "The pieces are coming together."

As for other tracks, Chocolate Outline was good, but I prefer a lot of the other Age Of Empires/Mythology/etc. music I've heard. Dance With a Crocodile would've got some points from me if not for those constant animal sounds, which did indeed get annoying as they went on. Beachway was minimal in its sound, and fairly catchy, but nothing too attention grabbing. Spray -boss- was probably the weakest track this week. The percussion overpowered everything else in the song, and though the percussion itself may not have been bad, by overpowering everything else, it brings down the song as a whole.

Really good offerings this week. There hasn't been one track that I did not like.

(3 points) Splinter Cell 3 Chaos Theory Soundtrack - Ruthless
Great drumwork to be heard here, and I absolutely love the the snare play halfway through. The track succeeds in creating the tense atmosphere which best fits the game. And as far as percussions go, this is the most percussive track and deserves those extra points for being so, and for managing to sound awesome at the same time.

(1 point) Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts
This one reminded me of Super Metroid as well. Chozos in particular. Still it had a variety of percussion instruments that helped create a beautiful ambience.

(1 point) Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline
I was quite hooked to this track. Very solemn and I liked the chimes and strings and mostly everything about it.

(1 point) Koudelka - Kiss Twice
Great melody. Though I felt the percussions were taking a backseat through most of track, considering the length of it.

Dance with a Crocodile has a very catchy melody to it, and sounds very Konami. I would have given it a point if not for the excessive animal exploitation. Beachway was nice and simple. Spray - boss had good drumming too, but it turned out sounding noisy throughout and had a very awful-sounding bass. Techno Rave was my least favorite this week. Good percussiveness to it, but too much techno elements.

Not bad for percussion week.

1st ChaosField Sound Track - spray -boss-
It's all over the place and probably noisy as well, but the percussive work and rhythms are very good. I can't say I was bored, my winner.

2nd Splinter Cell 3 Chaos Theory Soundtrack - Ruthless
Hmm, another interesting atmospheric track with some highly creative parts regarding rhythm and percussion. Another winner. I got the game as a special gift action, when I bought my external hard drive, never played it though.

3rd Koudelka - Kiss Twice
This one stood out, because the instrument playing the melody keeps knocking on my ear. Yes, there are some instruments that have an easier path to get into your ear. The melody can get a bit exhausting though.

The rest are interesting as well, but I found myself unable to pay greater attention to those, as they are rather understated (for me').

The votes, before it's too late:

Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline Gotta love the track titles from this series. This tune is a little on the ambient side of things, showcasing exotic percussion instruments like the finger piano rather than the underdeveloped guitar melody. The track's the best at the beginning--the percussion cuts out almost entirely near the end, and they're the best part.

ChaosField Sound Track - spray -boss- I'm not sure if heavily-samples percussive backbeats are what I'd consider "percussion" in the context of the theme week, but oh well. The textures created by the distortion and ringing metal are interesting, but they're not enough to carry an entire track. I tired of this stuff pretty quickly.

Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts This is more like it--using bells and chimes to create melody. I would have preferred that the chimes carry the tune, as opposed to the rather poor winds that wind up doing it. A bit uneaven too--the middle part is actually pretty hideous, while the latter it quite lovely.

Konami All-Stars 1993 ~ Music Station of Dreams - Dance With a Crocodile Jungle noise counts as percussion? Color me surprised. This is a flighty little track that's goofy and a little quirky, though it soon wears out its welcome.

Koudelka - Kiss Twice My contribution to Percussion Week. Hiroki Kikuta put some very strange limitations on himself for the Koudelka OST, and only one or two of the tracks wound up gelling as a result. Kiss Twice is one of them, and easily the best tune on its album. It combines the rhythmic, almost tribal, percussive base of all the game's battle themes with concert bells finger pianos, and light woodwinds. The result is a heady concoction that's rhythmic, melodic, and more than a little haunting.

Maple Story - Beachway is similar to one of my rejected nominations from Hako no Niwa in that it's very mallet-heavy, using marimbas to convey a melody while keeping that crisp percussive sound. It's a disarmingly simple tune, and quite charming.

Splinter Cell 3 Chaos Theory Soundtrack - Ruthless I'm tempted to suggest that this is too popular a tune to be here, but oh well. This song is very much in keeping with some of the poorer stereotypical elements of western VGM--it's repetitive, substitutes volume for substance, and sounds like part of a rock song before the final mix.

The Incredible Machine 3 - Techno Rave Again, not something I'd call percussive per se, but I suppose percussion and techno aren't mutually exclusive. Some interesting rhythmic stuff being done here, though it is spoiled somewhat by the annoying voiceover.

I suppose I'm a bit disappointed, though I don't know exactly what I was expecting from a percussion week. The very idea does warm my heart, former percussionist that I am.

The Point Spread
Kiss Twice - 3 pts.
Maple Story - 2 pts.
Incredible Machine - 1 pt.
Would Have Placed, But Not Percussive Enough - Suikoden

I guess the thing is that originally I was going for tracks with mainly percussion and not strong melodies, since I wanted the focus to be on percussion, rather than regular songs with melodies that featured heavier/better than usual percussion. It was hard to get 8 of the former, so it wound up being a mix of both.

It was worth a try, imo.

Anyway, I decided to go with my 3 favorites from this week and give them each 2 points.

2 pts. - Age of Mythology - Chocolate Outline - AoM has some of the best use of percussion in any game I've ever heard. Chocolate Outline is probably one of the best tracks.
2 pts. The Incredible Machine 3 - Techno Rave - I nominated this one purely because it's the best percussion track I've ever heard groove-wise. You won't find a variety of instruments in here. It's more like a drumline playing a bunch of cool rhythms and is really easy for me to get into.
2 pts. - Suikoden III - Complex Thoughts - I've listened to this many times, since it's one of the first noms that was made for percussion week. I really like it; it creates a neat mood.

Maple Story - Beachway - Simple, yes. But, it's cute. Apologies to orion for accepting this and not accepting your original Hako no Niwa nom, but at the time, I was still looking for more than just mallet percussion. Eventually had to take what we got, though.
Koudelka - Kiss Twice - This one's good, but unfortunately I don't have another point to give it.

-spray- boss and Ruthless are the most purely percussive songs of the week; though they both are mainly just drumset. Regardless, they feature some nice drumwork.

I encourage anyone who likes Chocolate Outline to check out the rest of Age of Mythology's music. It's really high quality (and unique) stuff. Mostly of a similar style to this.

3 Points - Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts
One of my favorites from this album, that I never really began to appreciate until I gave it a chance an listened to in its entirety. What really drew me to this track was how well the percussion was used to support and build the melody. I have a thing for tracks that integrate a drum loop and xylophone so fluidly, so the second half of the track (starting at 1:40) is nothing but awesome. Another reason I nominated this was that I felt it was extremely developed, featuring little to no melodic repetition thought.

2 Points - Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline
A light track that makes good use of various percussive instruments to support the gorgeous guitar melody. It’s good to hear more original VGM from western composers represented in SoTW. This would have taken the top spot, but I needed to support my nomination.

1 Point - Koudelka - Kiss Twice
I liked the diversity of the percussion, and the melodic development was decent, if a bit repetitive. Regardless, this was quite enjoyable.

And my nomination for next week is the same as the one I had submitted just before percussion week kicked in. To reiterate:

* Album Title: Dragon Quest Symphonic Suite Complete CD Box
* Artist: Koichi Sugiyama
* Track Title: Satan
* Source: http://www.gmronline.com/info.asp?CatNumber=SVWC-7150~7
* Disc Number: 6 (of 7)
* Track Number: 10
* Catalogue Number: SVWC-7155
* Year: 2003
* Note: This track originates from DQ5.

This week was really cool. I don't typically listen to percussive music like this, so it was a new experience, but it was a fun one. Helped to broaden my horizons on percussive game music as well. So yeah, I enjoyed it~

Chocolate Outline.. I love this track. Drakken sent me a handful of Age of Mythology tracks since I was having some difficulty in finding a percussion track to nominate, and this one stood out the most. I love the soothing atmosphere it creates with the subtle melody and percussion. I'd definitely second his suggestion about checking out more of the game's music, too.. If you enjoyed Chocolate Outline, that is.

spray -boss- is cool; almost a completely percussive track. I prefer my music with more of a melody, so this was a little hard to get into at first, but I grew to enjoy the active beats that characterize this track. Cool stuff.

Complex Thoughts struck me as similar to Chocolate Outline - a fairly subtle melody (though it develops more than Chocolate Outline) with enjoyable percussive parts. It creates a similar soft and soothing atmosphere for me, but also adds some liveliness to the melody.

Dance With a Crocodile was awesome. I loved the animal sounds as percussion, and the development of the melody was fairly enjoyable. It's a pretty fresh offering, but not all that impressive in terms of the actual percussion.

Kiss Twice is a pretty cool track by Kikuta. It's not what I'm used to hearing from him, but still enjoyable in its own way. The beats, however, are pretty unique and interesting to listen to - this is typical of his style in other games, and it doesn't fail to be enjoyable here. The melody is very strong (and has a nice amount of variance) too, which is a plus. Probably one of the stronger tracks this week!

Beachway is a decent, minimalisitic, and cutesy track. It's enjoyable for what it does, but nothing extremely impressive. Still, I enjoy it. This track makes me want to investigate Maple Story a little bit more - I've heard a little about it, but I've never bothered to see what it's all about.

Ruthless is similar to spray -boss- in that it's mostly based on percussion, but I find this even harder to get into. With a length of over five minutes, it becomes a little difficult to keep my attention focused on the track the whole time, too. It does do some interesting things with the percussion, but overall I find it pretty hard to enjoy.

Techno Rave is cool as well. I don't care that much for the techno elements in the track, but it's still fairly enjoyable. The percussion is also fairly good. It doesn't feel all that special to me, but it's still a decent track.

2 Points ~ Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline
2 Points ~ Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts
2 Points ~ Koudelka - Kiss Twice

Here's my next nomination.. I originally posted this before percussion week, but I believe it was taken off the queue so that my percussion nom would be able to make it on the list (or something like that :x). Anyway, here it is:

Percussion Week turned out a lot better than I thought it would. At least the first three songs gave me that impression. They are all A+. But then Dance with a Crocodile came along and deeply angered me. Kiss Twice bored me to tears. Beachway is a non entity. Ruthless was pretty groovy but a touch below the best of the field. Techno Rave was passable. Two points each to the good ones.

2 points - Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline
2 points - ChaosField Sound Track - spray -boss-
2 points - Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'm not boldly protesting this nomination, but my initial reaction is that Wario might be too well-known of a mascot to have its music qualify for SotW. This is just a personal feeling since the primary objective is obscurity. I get the same twinge whenever a track from a lesser-known Sonic game is nominated.

Wario World's not really lauded for its music, but I don't know on which side of the obscurity line this falls.

Anyone else have an opinion to throw in?

I'd say it's ok. Wario may be well-known, but it's not about the character behind the game, it's about the music. I've never heard Wario World's music and have no idea how it is or what it sounds like. I mean, I could guess, but you know. I've never heard it discussed, either, so I don't think it's just me.

I was speaking idiomatically.

The music itself is obscure enough, even if Wario himself isn't. And if Suikoden passes as permissible, I see no reason not to allow it.

I've never even heard anyone mention Wario World's music before now, and the game wasn't very popular IIRC. Let it in.

---

Onto WEEK 66, I was largely disappointed. It was a good idea marred by poor nomination choices. Most of the tracks barely had any more percussive elements than the standard selection of material in this event. Furthermore, "spray -boss-" was too repetitive, and "Ruthless" was too ambient. I should have nominated something like "Desert" from Front Mission Alternative, just to be able to have a track to root for.

3 point(s) :: Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline
Best track this week, and most varied/enjoyable use of percussion this week (even if it tends to be on the minimalistic side). This track is exempt from all those bad things I said above.

2 point(s) :: Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack - Complex Thoughts
Pretty much same as above. However, while the melody later in this track kicks ass, this track as a whole isn't as well composed as "Chocolate Outline". Also exempt.

1 point(s) :: Koudelka - Kiss Twice
It's a Kikuta track, so it's due for a point. However, he has done better percussive work than this. The percussion in this track is pretty standard for him (at least for this album).

"Beachway" was decent, but not percussive enough. "Techno Rave" was 'meh'. "Dance With a Crocodile" just sucked.

That's all can say about this week for now.

Ohhh SHIT. I completely forgot about Front Mission Alternative when thinking about possible Percussion Week tracks. Had I remembered, I might've gone with Desert because it's awesome.

Lacking comments this week. Overall a decent experience that produced a couple quality songs, but hardly the across-the-board thrills that some weeks offered.

(2 points) Koudelka - Kiss Twice
(2 points) Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack - Chocolate Outline
(1 point) Splinter Cell 3 Chaos Theory Soundtrack - Ruthless
(1 point) The Incredible Machine 3 - Techno Rave
