WTF You mean this is VGM?
We've had plenty of threads on here about introducing others to VGM and about what songs could "trick" people into listening without realizing the track is from a game, but what I'd like to know is: has anyone here ever been tricked in such a fashion?
We're (for the most part) all seasoned VGM listeners, and have all learned what certain characteristics the vast majority of game tracks have in common, be it musical motifs, looping, patterns of complexity, etc. Has anyone ever been listening to some song or another at a friend's house (or anywhere else), found out that it was a VGM track, and been truly surprised at the truth? Happened to me once in a game store during the Halomania 2001-2002 era when Halo was the only game in existence and Halo was saving the human race from the plague of bad video games (which means every video game ever released before Halo which is true because Megalith said so) even though it was the only video game ever released anyway and it doesn't have to make sense because it's Halo...*deep breath*...Anyway, the game store was playing the Halo soundtrack over the PA system and at first I thought it was some kind of film score or neo-classical album. I asked the guy behind the counter and FOMG GAEM SOUNDTRACK. I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was, considering that it would stand to reason for a game soundtrack to be played in a game store, but for whatever reason...shockage. Anyone else have this happen? Jam it back in, in the dark. It is not my custom to go where I am not invited. |
No, I think your case is a very rare one, because nowadays everything could just be game music, and probably nothing would surprise if it turned out to be that genre.
With me it was more like when I heard some VGM albums, and couldn't believe such music existed at all. On a similar note though, I have heard VGM at places I didn't expect. In an online-gaming internet cafe, they have been playing all sort of vocal VGM, such as Eyes on Me and the like from other games. You wouldn't believe it, Final Fantasy vocal music is pretty appreciated outside of this forum. Another time was when I heard the ringing tone of my friend's mobile phone, it was playing the melody of To Zarnakand. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I don't know if this counts directly, but I remember hearing this pretty neat song at my friend's birthday party last month. I paid closer attention and then instantly realized: "Oh my! This sounds a lot like Dark World from the SNES Zelda but a little different!" He then said it was from OCRemix, which I hadn't visited in ages. I had thought it was some kind of mainstream instrumental at first listen.
So I guess that's more like a case of "vgm remixes can be good too", more than "vgm can be good too." This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Yes, but just once in life time, and it's Eyes on Me. Other than that would be miracle.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?
