Shoe Situation

Through the title, I mean, what's your situation on you wearing shoes around your house and friends wearing their shoes.

Being my house is a typical Asian household, I usually ask my friends to take off their shoes just before they enter the living room, leaving their shoes near the door. As for myself, I walk around the house in them and place them in a convenient location so I could access it from all walks of where I'm going.

I always found it a huge pet peeve of mine when people sit on their feet on furniture while they have their shoes on. I think to myself, where the hell has that shoe been and you're getting all that dirty crap on MY bed? On MY couch? Oh, hell no.

So what about you? Are you a little more lenient or are you as stingy as me?

Same. I usually take off my shoes as well before going inside of a home (typical flip custom, I suppose) but wear slippers afterwards.

The problem that usually arises is the cold floor which can give me an initial shock when I plant my feet on the floor.

My friends though thinks it's okay to let their shoes inside the house. They're not the ones cleaning the house anyway so I tell them to take their shoes off.

I don't ask people to, but they generally seem inclined to take their shoes off before coming through the door anyway. So long as their shoes aren't covered in crap and look reasonably clean I'm not arsed.

When I go to other people's houses I always look for somewhere to leave my shoes; I feel quite uncomfortable wearing them inside, that and an immovable sense of politeness >.>

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

It's pretty much the same for me if I'm at a friend's house. Regardless, I take my shoes off. It's only being polite, but it changes if I'm only gonna be in his house for less than five minutes or so. If we're there to run in and grab something and he or she doesn't take off their shoes, I'll just follow them and go with my shoes on.

I had always, ever since I was young, thought it was weird not to remove your shoes before you walk inside someone's home. I guess the idea of tracking dirt from outside to the inside really bugs me. As well, I haven't really been to anyone's place in which it was alright to walk around with your shoes on. People that leave their shoes on only stay for less than 5 minutes in our apartment, especially because they're not staying for an extended amount of time.

Up to now, I still feel weird if I walk into any house with my shoes on. I do respect customs, though, so if the person I'm visiting keeps his or her shows on, so do I.

I don't wear shoes at home, and the visitors I've had in the past always took their shoes off as well even if they weren't told to do so. I tend to feel uncomfortable wearing shoes in another person's house in general. If they have carpet, I just assume that the shoes need to be removed before walking further.

I've been raised with the idea of shoes = outside. I don't wear any slippers inside, but I think that it's a Korean thing (I know that there's a lot of Japanese families that have indoor slippers, which I think it's kinda strange...of course, it could just be my family)

When I'm going to a American/Typically Non-Asian house, I always stop by the doorstop and ask if I should take my shoes off. When I was younger, the parents/friend usually looked at me weird and told me it's fine, but nowadays, I usually do.

I noticed that I'm a bit more lenient towards the shoe rule if it's hardwood floors.... =/

I usually follow the lead of whoever's house it is that I'm visiting.

At my place I prefer it if people take their shoes off at the entrance. My apartment has a linoleum entryway, and that's much easier to clean than if they track crap all over my carpet. I don't like to sound come off as a neat freak though, so I generally don't say anything unless someone starts to put their feet up on the furniture while still wearing their shoes. A dirty floor I can live with, but I don't want leaf bits and who knows what else all over my couch.

So many flips in this thread about shoes.

Yeah, I take off my shoes upon entering and especially before entering a carpeted area. But in my multi-ethnic apartment back in college, my roommates didn't really follow that, but I did, as well as any other (mostly Filipino) friends that would come over for meetings and such.

But if there was a party, shoes could stay on at your own risk. It's a general rule: if you pass out with shoes on, you're fair game.

At home though, I always take my shoes off upon entering, and so do guests. And actually, I have tsinelas (flip-flops) that I wear for outside and then would switch to another pair to wear inside if I wanted to.

I seriously don't care that much. If the weather is good outside, I see no problem why my guests should leave their shoes on. Of course, if the shoes are wet or dirty because it rains outside, it should be a matter of course for them to take them off and if they don't do it themselves, I will tell them to do so.

I try not to say anything if people wear their shoes through the house, but it does bother me, especially with Oregon weather. The only time I really say anything is if I had just cleaned.

If you're Swedish, you also take off your shoes. I found it odd how that's the only European culture that did that.

In my parents' home, we sometimes take off our shoes. Most of the main level is tile, so my parents tend to keep their shoes on, but I'm used to taking them off. In my apartment we all follow Asian rules and the shoes always come off. I feel the initial inclination to take off shoes no matter whose house I go into, but I always follow the lead of the host, and if they're already in the house when I arrive I try to ask before I go either way. Many Americans get weirded out if you take your shoes off automatically, so it's best to find out first.

In my house at home, no one particularly cares... for the most part its such a shit hole that we'd usually prefer walking around in shoes. My room at school though... I usually take off my shoes ASAP, and get others to do the same. I like walking barefoot on the rug, and that would get ruined if mud is tracked in.

I wear my shoes in the house, unless they are muddy/ wet/ covered in grass or snow. When I don't wear my shoes in the house I tend to wear my slippers, if nothing else, they keep my feet warm.

I have only removed my shoes once when entering another house and found it weird to do so, but I followed the host by taking off my shoes and leaving them by the front door.

The only time I've had to remove my shoes was at a friend's house whose mom didn't want to get the carpet too dirty. Otherwise, haven't had to do so elsewhere.

I take my shoes off before walking into my front room I always have done and probably always will. When I vist friends I keep my shoes on because they always keep their shoes on, if they take them on I'll take mine off if I'm staying ages.
If I'm sitting on a bed or couch I'll take my shoes off before sitting crossed legged/ or tucking my feet under my bum. It's just more polite to do so.

I wear slippers at home and shoes when I'm going out. When I go visiting, I follow the guidelines of the house I'm visiting, but I never put shoes on furniture. Slippers are OK, because they are clean.

I don't really mind people wearing shoes in my dorm, mainly because people don't stay long enough, and I only live here for eight months of the year. Otherwise, if I am home, or in a large apartment, I make sure people take off their shoes. If someone is planning to lie on my bed or something, I will ask them to remove their shoes.

I've always worn shoes inside, unless the carpet is white or someone asks me to take them off, or they're covered in something that would come off on the floor. My home(s) have tended to be on the more ghetto side of life, and taking your shoes off is an invitation to step on something sharp and/or nasty.

I guess when it comes down to it the cleanliness of the house is the deciding factor in whether or no to go sockfoot.

At my home home, I take off my shoes but wear slippers unless walking on carpet. When I'm at school, living in my apartment, I have this little carpeted hallway leading to my room where I keep my shoes and walk around the apartment barefoot except in the kitchen. When I'm in the kitchen, I keep on slippers.

My roommates seem to take their shoes off wherever they feel comfortable to take them off so occasionally I end up tripping over my male roommate's giant and heavy boots...especially if I'm walking around in the dark. But they walk around barefoot otherwise.

If it makes any difference, my roommates are white and I am Asian. None of us ask other people to take off their shoes, but they usually do on their own volition. Sometimes, I guess if they're feeling lazy or the floor looks dangerously messy, they don't. There are no giant rules about it in my apartment and we dont' really address it or anything, but I ask people to take their shoes off if they're going to be in my room for a while.

Heh, "tracking in dirt."

Frankly, I think you people are germophobes. I'm looking at the bottom of my sneakers right now. No dirt.

I don't know where you people are spending your time. Mud pits, sewers, giant vats of baked beans?

Shoes ON in the house (if I've come in and I'm still planning on going out later in the day). Of course I just go with socks if I'm just lounging around.

I always go barefoot in my house, but I think it's mainly out of habit. My mother likes to yell at me about it because she seems to think I'll step on something like a nail and hurt myself. :/

When visiting others, I take my shoes off if there's carpet, or if I think I'll be there for a while.
