Unsetting Read Only in XP

Quick question, has anybody been successful changing the attributes of folders in Windows XP? I've been trying to unset the "Read-Only" attribute off my folders whether by using the explorer method or the ATTRIB command in the command prompt. It seems to work, but when I check it again, it becomes read only again. It's the most annoying thing because many things aren't working correctly because of it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Where are the folders in question located in your file system tree?
After some quick experimentation, I do not have this problem. Admittedly, I am on a fresh Windows installation, but this problem does not occur on a more seasoned install either.

A permissions problem may be the key; attempt to remove the read only attribute on the Administrator account itself.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Folders are inherently read-only. It's part of the NTFS file system. You can't change that fact. Read-Only has an effect on files, but not folders.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
