Need some upgrade advice

Hey,

I've recently looked at overclockers.co.uk and found that some of the best processors available have had a huge price drop, so I think I might take my chance and do an upgrade.

I was thinking about selling my current components on Ebay - Athlon XP 3000+, Asus a7n8x motherboard, and I am hoping, from what i've seem, i'll get around the 75-80 pound mark for them, leaving me enough hopefully for a new processor, preferrably an Athlon 64 4000 or Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (which do you think is better? considering I rarely multi-task).

Then, i'm hoping to get rid of my one month old XFX 7800GS graphics card in perfect condition, which I knew straight after buying it it was a mistake, considering it being a bit of a bottleneck, and the fact I could have put in another 50 pounds and upgraded everything. However, i'm not sure where to sell the card, as Ebay say they require a 30 pound fee if it sells which is ridiculous, unless anyone here at GamingForce wants it? *hint* *hint*. Then with that money I can simply buy a new PCI-E card and sell my very old components for my previous PC for enough for a new mobo, preferrably an A8N PCI-E.

Does this sound like a good plan?

well for the price, the 3800 (non-x2) is way better than the 4000. it's only around $105 here.

if you do a lot of multitasking, get a dual-core. it will also future-proof you for any multithreaded stuff in the future, unless you upgrade often.

if you do no multitasking or very light stuff and don't do things that benefit from dualcore (encoding, video editing, heavy multitasking) then get a fast single-core and upgrade to dualcore later when they're cheaper and more prevailant.

Or you can get a Core 2 Duo, which outperforms pretty much all Athlon CPUs.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

If you are going to go AMD, then I advise the Athlon64 4200 X2. It really is the best price/speed ratio processor. And you can get them now for about $200 or less. Also, make sure if you are getting AMD, to purchase Socket AM2, NOT Socket 939 as this is being phased out.

As to the 7800GS, I'm interested, but not alot of money interested. I already have a X800XT-PE, but I imagine the the 7800GS is faster. PM me with an amount around $100 US and I might talk .

Lol fraid not Dayvon. I've seen them second hand ones on Ebay for around 160-170 pounds so i'm going to take my chance.

And about AM2, that's what I was hoping to avoid, seeing as i'd need new ram etc.
