bittorrent
I'm currently using BitComet, but the download won't go over the 20 kb/s. I got a download speed of around 500 kb/s how can I set it properly, or do someone know a better torrent client?
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
In torrents, your download speed is completely dependent upon the upload speed of other people who you are connected to.
This is not something that you can change. You might as well play solitaire for a while, because I highly doubt that you will ever reach a 500 kb/s download rate. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
You can have such high speeds on private sites, where a lot of people seed files to maintain a high ratio, but on public trackers, I imagine it's quite rare to get 500 KB/s.
I recommend µTorrent, though. It's very similar to BitComet, but smaller in size and less taxing on RAM. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. Nothing wrong with not being strong

Yeah, µTorrent is definitely the superior GUI. most times if something is over 1gb and has less than 10 seeds (public trackers, mind you) I won't touch it. Most ISPs but a pretty harsh cap on UL speed. I usually max out on µTorrent at like 50k/s upload. heavily seeded torrents can sometimes get up to 300k/s or more depending on... well a bunch of things. Also make sure that if you're using a router you've got the port that µTorrent uses forwarded.

While it is true the torrent speeds depends on other people...
Make sure you cap your upload at about 80-90% of what your line is capable of. Right now I'm on a line with only 128K upstream so I have to cap my upload speeds at 10K/sec. If I don't, my upstream becomes too choked to send the request packets and the torrent I'm trying to download and my Internet browsing slow down to a crawl. Also, uTorrent supports protocol encryption. It's under Options and then Preferences and then Bittorrent and then it's at the bottom right. I'd recommend setting it to Enabled and then checking "Allow incoming legacy connections." If your ISP is being a big prick and choking Bittorrent speeds, then this should help. (At least in theory.) I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
