The Joy of the Sharpshooter (Sup THE END)
I'm sure many of us gamers have played various PC and console games which have projectile weapons and fire arms as the main stray of weaponry on hand. We usually get the regular assortment of pistols, Uzis, machine guns, shot guns, and the like. The type of gun that I'm always eager to try out is the sniper rifle and check out how its scope is and how the rifle reacts in comparison to other weapons.
Some of my favorite games that involve the sniper rifle, whether it'd be a HK PSG-1 of Rainbow Six/Metal Gear fame, or some sci-fi like weapons, like the rain gun (although I don't remember it having a scope), just add that extra element of standing from a far and picking them off. ![]() An HK PSG-1 __________________________________________________ _______ A few games that come to mind: 1) MDK (PC)- perhaps this is the first game I remember that featured the sniper rifle that Kurt could use. Although this wasn't a seperate weapon, but more of a sniper mode Kurt enabled to use his regular chain gun into concentrated pinpoint attacks. It was quite amusing that the sniper mode also allowed you to lob rockets and grenades around, if I remember correctly. 2) Max Payne 1 (PC)- seeing the bullet exit the muzzle and make a beeline right to the victims head was extremely satisfying. 3) Ghost Recon 1 (PC) - I actually used the sniper quite extensively as I loved to pick off guys and see the rest of the enemy scramble, trying to figure out where I am, and by the time, THEM R WASTED! 4) Metal Gear Solid 1 (PSX) 2 and 3 (PS3) – Perhaps not widely used in the most part of the game, but some battles did use the sniper to get past certain points. Think of fighting Sniper Wolf ( I used the Nikita for the second battle, cheap bastard), and Raiden taking out the bombs in the Big Shell. Surprisingly, I thought it was easier going after The End with my AK-47 rather than camp for him, since by the time I spotted him, he’d hit me. =/ I really liked how the scope of the Dragunov SVD looked like. 5) Golden Eye (N64) – Sniping was an absolute joy with how the Z button and the shoulder buttons made this perhaps one of the best FPS on any console. God, I miss playing “License to Kill” in the Archives while camping and sniping. 6) Mercenaries (PS2) – So far, the sniper rifle is one of the most powerful weapons that can take down targets in one shot, even in the chest. Plus most of the enemy AI won’t shoot or won’t hit you from afar, giving you plenty of opportunity to knock em dead. In this thread, post which games really made you enjoy using the sniper rifle to take down tangos. Describe if you liked the aesthetics of how the scope looked like. Even describe if you took "pride" in seeing virtual enemies plop to the floor after getting a clean head shot, thanks to you. Also, for reference sake: List of sniper rifles TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() - What we all do best - |
I absolutely love the sniper rifles in Halo 1 and 2 and Call of Duty 2. I like the quick firing rate of Halo's rifle, like the ones in the MGS series, and in CoD2, even though it's technically not a sniper rifle, there's something extremely satisfying about watching someone walk by on the lower ground, zooming in with the Kar98k and plugging them with a well-placed bullet to the chest/back.

I guess in spite of Unreal Tournament 2004's primarily run n' gun scenarios, I love being a sniper in that game, rather it's with the far more inaccurate Lightning Gun or the Sniper Rifle. Given the game's push toward frantic dodging and constant movement, being a sniper is relatively difficult, and I'll admit I do take a little pride in being pretty damn good with that rifle in spite of how the game is geared toward something like the Minigun, Rocket Launcher, and Shock Rifle.
I'll also throw in that getting an InstaGib game going with some really good players will help you learn how to aim -- fast. For those unintiated, in UT2004 some of the maps can be set up for InstaGib rules, meaning one-shot kills. The only rifle is a Shock Rifle, and you basically fire away. It can be really frantic, but if you're playing with some really good people, it helps to tweak your accuracy real quick. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. Black, for all its pushing towards run-and-gun, can deliver some nice sharpshooting experiences, especially when using something as 'unsuited for the purpose' as the M249 or M4.
Of course, one of the most annoying things about playing online are those people who for whatever reason conflate sharpshooting with cheating or 'cheese'. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() - What we all do best - |
Oh, to fight cheaply. Well isn't the tactics that works best shouldn't be maximized, as long as it's not actual cheat codes and stuff in multiplayer games? I don't understand why people get so frustrated when I use a sniper rifle and camp. It's a perfectly legit tactic that they can also use or turn the tables by lobbing grenades. Players just sometimes don't think because they don't have a proper line of sight. I'm not immortal either. Seriously.

Definitely Unreal Tournament for me. I remember spending hours on top of Facing Worlds with sniping / spawn camping. It doesn't get more satisfying than hearing HEAD SHOT! and GODLIKE! at the same time.

I haven't played too many FPS games, but of all firearms I've always been partial to sniper rifles, as well as characters that are simply known as snipers. I loved the scenario in the first Halo where you hid and sniped some of the Covenant before sneaking in, while in the background "Under the Cover of Night" is playing. I always get excited when I come across them in the game.
Also, Unreal Tournament comes to mind, though I haven't played that game in a long time. I was such a camper, hahaha. It's not so much fun when you're the one being sniped, however. "Headshot!" and all that stuff. But that's life, I guess. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
I lean towards the SVD more though.
And Unreal Tournament memories of sniping come to mind. I mean, Facing Worlds come to mind and we just snipe each other on the building's openings. Fun times. There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
I have found the sniping in Resident Evil 4 to be immensely satisfying. Much moreso than any other game, FPS or otherwise.

I used to play Rogue Spear several years ago. I joined a clain in that game that was mostly composed of snipers. I got into it too and became a top notch sniper as well. Ever since then, I almost always fall back to being a sniper in any sort of MP game that I can.
But my Rogue Spear sniping days were the most glorious. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
Sniping in the R6 games was fun, because the targets moved slowly enough and reacted properly. But why oh why are the rifles never silenced. I mean, the whole purpose of sniping is to take out the enemy before they get a chance to react, plus stealth is a factor, so wouldn't a silencer just make sense? Unless perhaps in real life it alters the trajectory of the bullet too greatly, unlike a machine gun where the range isn't so great.
Most amazing jew boots ![]() - What we all do best - |
Which I assume it does. With airsoft rifles, for example, the silencers you can purchase make the gun more innacurate. I'd imagine the same theory behind this affects while real rifles of this sort are not silenced. Especially since the range you're taking into account is far greater, so any slight change to the trajectory could totally butcher your shot.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Real life snipers don't really use silencers, but keep in mind, they snipe from huge distances, AND relocate after a shot. Not like in Rogue Spear, though that was still fun.
And for the record, the Rogue Spear expanion did have a silenced rifle. FELIPE NO ![]() |

The heated Rebar crossbow in Half-Life 2 is really satisfying. You've got the combine soldier in your sight, you don't press fire just yet. You've picked a stationary target just so you can savour the time spent looking through your sight at your mark, a grin on your face. You press fire and the first sensation of joy comes with the twang noise as the bar is catapulted forward. You arch backwards ever so slightly in your chair, as you become one with the rebar, feeling it glide through the air at a slight descent towards its target. The experience is only brought to a close when the bar hits its mark, causing the target to jolt violently backwards and become pinned to the wall behind, suspended. The climax being everything the build up might have hinted at. It's really quite. beautiful.
How ya doing, buddy?
