I have two 17" monitors right next to each other with my current setup. Whenever I degauss them, it goes wilder than normal and affects the other screen as well. I know this has something to do with magnetism, but should I worry that this is detrimental to the two monitors? Should I put some space in between them?

Magnetic Fields go far beyond the reach. There's nothing you can do - I've used older 15" CRTs that when Degaussed would shake the screens of monitors 6 feet away. I don't think it's terribly detrimental. The 15"ers I mentioned earlier were all in a computer lab and most of them were still going after 7 years.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I think when you degauss you're sending a slight power surge through the lines, so that'll tend to make any electronics on the same circuit wobble a little bit.

Same reason why my speakers used to pop whenever the halogen lamp was turned on in the next room.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

My first question would be why you are degaussing them? Unless you keep some unshielded speakers near your PC, you shouldn't need to do that more often than a couple of times a year, if that. You should only degauss when you notice some signs of visual disturbance, such as rainbow effects, or something similar.

Older CRTs are by far the worst offenders in the magnetic disturbance category. My parents' upstairs raido emitted a buzzing noise when I used an old ass 1993 CRT. As long as the deguassing doesn't have lasting effects on the other monitor, there shouldn't be any problems.
I used to constantly deguass a monitor from 1997, it died seven years later; while that 1993 monitor which can't deguass on itself will still work if I need it.

I do have speakers near the monitors, but they are new enough; I'm sure they're shielded. I was just wondering if the degaussing was negatively affecting the other monitor (since degaussing REALLY flared up the screen more than usual) and if therefore I should move the monitors further apart.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
