another n00b going sony

Ok I have decided that I need to buy a PS2, I have checked my local buy/trade ad service and have left a message to two people. I should get a call sometime this week, so in the mean time I have to figure out what games to get. I see that RABicle has made a thread like this in the past but the problem is, I love RPG's which he was against. So I would like to know, what are some must have games I should buy for both PS1 and 2?

I like RPG's, Sidescrolling shooters like Metal Slug, and Gradius, 1st person shooters, and Adventure type games

so far I am thinking of getting:
Burnout: Revenge (either for the PS2 or Xbox not sure which)
Guitar Hero
Gradius V
Gradius III
Final Fantasy (not sure what final fantasy as I havn't played any after 6)
Shadow of the Colossus
Soul Caliber 3 (maybe 2 as well)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence / Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (differance?)

I already have Resident Evil 4 for Gamecube

Playstation games are very difficult to find here, but if it truley kicks ass I will consider Ebay

EDIT: ok updated list
Burnout: Revenge (either for the PS2 or Xbox not sure which)
Guitar Hero
Gradius V
Gradius III
Koudelka
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy X
the rest of the Final Fantasy series after purchasing the above
Shadow of the Colossus
Soul Caliber 3
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Valkyrie Profile
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Suikoden I, II, III, V
ICO
Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4 + 5
god of war
Devil May Cry 1
Devil May Cry 3
Contra: Shattered Soldier
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
Silent Hill series
Star Ocean: Second Story
Dynasty Warriors
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Xenosaga
Chrono Cross
Dragon Warrior 8

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I'm assuming that your budget is "infinity", since a few of these I will list are pricey.

Koudelka {PS1}, Shadow Hearts, Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Well actually you might not like them, since they are darker in tone, and you have such fluff in your avatar and sig, but I don't care.

Final Fantasy Tactics, VIII, VII {in that order}.

Suikoden, Suikoden II, Suikoden III, Suikoden V. First two are PS1.

Valkyrie Profile {PS1}. This is the best game to be released on the PS1. Anyone who argues this point has an opinion that is different from mine, but that's ok.

That's just a quicklist that includes traditional RPG style, darker RPG style, quirky RPG style, and PURE, UNADULTERATE AWESOME RPG style {Valkyrie Profile}. Basically if you grab two or three of those, you will get some role playing enjoyment out of your PS2.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Get a magic tool and swap disk.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Fuck that, modchip the thing. You're in canada.

Yeah, well, this is RABicle you're talking about here, sir.

ICO is another game you need to get. But I won't recommend the american version since it's missing pieces of coolness (and I'm not just talking about the art cards.)

If you like side scrolling shooters like Metal Slug, obviously get Metal Slug 3 since it's the best in the series. I hear that there's a pack which has Metal Slug 4 and 5 on one disc, so you might want to get that as well. Metal Slug 1 and X are on the original PS1, but I doubt you'll obtain those legally.

I can't comment on first person shooters, because they're, well, gross. What I can comment on, though, is Final Fantasy X. It's like a bare requirement when you purchase a PS2, to play FFX. Though it isn't the greatest game in the world, I still enjoyed it and it's different from the rest. Much like Kingdom Hearts, which I found very entertaining and kept me playing for hours. It's dirt cheap and you're missing out by not picking these up.

The difference between Subsistence and the original MGS3 is that the subsistence version is like a "remixed" version, spanning over something like 5 discs.

know of a reliable site to buy the magic tool and swap disk or mod chip and what modchip is the best/ easiest to install?
I just checked out some of the games you posted russ, I must say Valkyrie Profile looks hella sweet! I also checked out Shadow Hearts: Covenant, I like the timed hit meter thing looks like an awsome game. I saw a video clip of Suikoden V and it also looks worth the purchase. I may have to buy everything you posted so far.

I got mine at http://www.swapnslide.com/.

The magic tool and swap magic combo is the way to go if you're getting a slimeline.

fuck modchips, softmods are the way to go, less mess and no hardware alteration (unless u decide to do a flippy) thats just my 2 cents, if you are getting a slimline DEF dont get a chip, i hear those are a bitch to install. in any case there are millions of places online that u can download the magic swap app and i made my own slidecard off of online plans. dont spend money on things if you dont have to :P

but def get god of war, and black. great games both of them, that is if you like senseless violence and explosions.

You like Metal Slug and the run n' gun shooter genre? Try picking up Contra: Shattered Soldier for the PS2. I don't think you'll be disappointed (although it is a pretty difficult game). Also, it's worth noting that the game is a CD.

If you want to get Valkyrie Profile it's gonna cost you a fortune, unless you actually find it in a used game shop. Ebay or half.com will cost over $100 and that's not even factory sealed.

You can get alot of the Final Fantasies that have been released on PS1 or PS2 for pretty cheap on Buy.com or Amazon.com new.

Having played Soul Calibur 2 and 3. I'd say getting 2 would be a waste if you're getting 3. The new Mortal Kombat game they're working on looks pretty awesome but only time will tell.

There are alot of older game Collections you could get that are available on PS2 like Midway Arcade Treasures and Capcom Classics Collection if you like older games.

Personal reccomendations though, if you like RPGs.
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Valkyrie Profile if you can afford it
Tales of Destiny
Disgaea

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

For the record, MGS3: Subsistence is only 2 disks, the original Snake Eater game is included, along with a bunch of extras like the original Metal Gear 1 & 2.

Also, get MGS2, duh.

Playstation games are very difficult to find here, but if it truley kicks ass I will consider Ebay
-ICO-
I'm glad you have SOTC on there, and someone mentioned ICO. Ico is a short game, but a beautiful game. You won't find any rocket launchers or rail guns in this movie, only a 2 by 4 stick ( and some other melee weapons later on), but its a game that really tests you on thinking and as well as exploration. Q can go all over this, so I'll leave this schtick to him (or Lix).

You can probably get SOTC for about $40ish CDN to $50, depending on the store, duh. ICO is more harder to find and you'll probably have to go to EB games or something.

-VALKRIE PROFILE-
Valkyrie Profile, as Russ has mentioned, is ZOMG awesome on all levels, and it was worth my $85 USD then after shipping and customs. Damn expensive to find now, but hey, September 9, 2006 is when VP: Silmeria comes out, which takes place before VP. So it'll be much easier to get your hands on that one. Don't miss out on VP though, GRAB it the moment you ever lay your eyes on one, even if they're selling the discs only with no instructions or jewel case, seriously. Plus it does give some simple instruction in the beginning of the game, but there's always gamefaqs.
What makes it unique is the battle system. Hot damn, never have I actually WANTED to get into "random" battles (you can see the enemies on screen before fighting them, like Chronotrigger/cross, if you've played that game). I think it's a pretty fast paced game in terms of battle when you're probably at about chapter 4 plus.

-FINAL FANTASY SOMETHINGARATHER-
With the whole Final Fantasy thing, well...there's basically VII to X-2. It's a wide range, and I've seen another FF thread kicking around of which they should start on, here it is. Also FFXII comes out this October, but perhaps you might want to try the other FFs since this one is departuring from the regular random battles, and from what I've read (and talked to GFF members with the Jap copy), it's pretty bloody hard with the souped up bosses and all, not your walk in the park FF title.

-MERCENARIES-
I'm not much of an action gamer, but I did get Mercenaries, basically it's a GTA style game but more military tuned. Selling for about $25 CDN now.

-GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS-
Speaking GTA style, pick up Grand Theft Auto San Andreas while you're at it. A friggin massive game that even I'm still trying to go through. I'm up to the Woozie missions in Chinatown. This is the best action/holycrazycrap game to be released on the PS2. Anyone who argues this point has an opinion that is different from mine, but that's ok. Sup Russ
Selling for about $25 for the special edition (sans hot coffee) at your local Walmart (you do live nearby a walmart, now don't you?) You said something about adventure, and GTA:SA is packed of it. It's not exactly the Indiana Jones type of adventure, so I hope you know what I'm talking about if you've never played a GTA type game before. Hopefully you have.

Another note, if you can wait for another 11 days, the GST will drop one whole percent . It might not sound like much, but living in the land of 14% tax is better than %15, if I remember correctly about BC's PST/GST. LOL'ing with Alberta's 6% GST come July 1st. So after this time, shop like crazy.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

The 3rd "Existence" disc for the Subsistence LE has a 3 hour "movie" made from the cutscenes in MGS3. It's not very good, the story is delivered much more effectively in the Snake Eater game. The LE is more expensive and much harder to find. Just buy the 2 disc Subsistence. It's only $30 and you get: the original Snake Eater game with a new 3D rotatable camera and new camo's, Demo theater (view all the cutscenes), the original 2 Metal Gear games (for the MSX/Nintendo. MG2 was never officially released before in the U.S. before this), a couple more "Snake vs. Ape" missions (Ape Escape with Snake), Duel mode (fight all the bosses), and the brand new online mode. Online mode is pretty fun and justifies the cost by itself.

Make sure to get the newer slim PS2 which comes with the network adaptor built in.

Some note worthy non-RPG's:

-SOCOM 3. Online mode is the best out of all the SOCOMs. If you like shooters at all get this.

-God of War. Action/Adventure/Platformer. Great game. Get it now!

-Ace Combat series. If you've never played Ace Combat before you need to try it out. Start with AC04 (you can find it for $10!). If that floats your boat, immediately get AC5 and Zero. Get AC2 and 3 for PS1 if you can find them.

-Devil May Cry 3. Action. Pure awesome action.

-Silent Hill games. Survival Horror. Much scarier and much better story than Resident Evil. SH1 and SH2 are a must. Good luck even finding SH3 or 4.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Just obviously don't expect a PS1 to have that "spizzaz" of the PS2 games in terms of graphics and sound, duh. PS1 was great for RPGS, since they were, ya know, more original than most of the RPGs now.

Well shit george, if you haven't played PS1 games and are getting a PS2, you should start with MGS1 instead of 3 =/
A far more enjoyable game I might add.

People have pretty much recommended most of the playworthy titles and I'd hate to second recommendations. From PS1 titles, you should look into Grandia (the first one, not 2) and possibly Vagrant Story if you ever get a craving for action-RPGs.

The Metal Slug games on PS1 are pretty terrible, and I think it's a crime they haven't released arcade perfect PS2 ports of the first two titles
Metal Slug 3 is definitely the one to go with, it's considered the best in the series by many and for good reasons (even though I personally liked the first game cause there were no aliens).

Both Katamari Damacy titles are extremely funny and relatively inexpensive cause of their cheaper retail price (though I'm not sure if they've become collector's items over there). The music is excellent too.

Genji is wonderful if you liked games like Onimusha. It's a similar third person hack n slash, with RPG elements and an emphasis on beautiful visuals and flash.

If you dig electronica, Rez and Frequency are the best music games money can buy. Though if I understood correctly, Rez has become somewhat rare, but if you run into it, it's a brilliant Panzer Dragoon style shooter with a brilliant soundtrack and a brilliantly designed sound system that alters and evolves depending on how you play the levels.

EDIT:
And why the heck if FFVIII on the list but not FFVII? =/ Russ recommended both =o

Jam it back in, in the dark.
