Building a new Computer - Tips?
I'm currently thinking about building a new computer. Here's what I've gotten written down so far:
Antec Sonata II Piano Black Quiet Mid Tower ATX Black 450W PS $122.99 CDN / $110.99 USD Asus P5ND2-SLI Socket 775 nVidia SLI Technology Dual-Core CPU Ready $117.00 CDN / $105.58 USD Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHz EM64T XD Dual Core 2x1MB 533MHz FSB $159.99 CDN / $144.38 USD Kingmax 1024MB PC4300 DDR2 533MHz 240-pin Unbuffered DIMM $99.99 CDN / $90.23 USD BFG GeForce 7600GS OC 256MB DDR2 Dual-Link DVI-I HDTV Out PCI-E $169.99 CDN / $153.40 USD Western Digital WD-2000JS Caviar 200GB 8MB 8.9ms 7200rpm SATA II $94.99 CDN / $85.72 USD Currently this comes to about $764.95 CDN / $690.31 USD. Since I live in Ontario, I get hit with 7% GST and 8% PST, pushing this to $879.69 CDN / $793.86 USD. Anyone care to challenge this system and help me figure out what other alternatives I have? The links above link to two stores, Logic Computer House and Canada Computers, which are currently within reach and thus I can get in-store prices as opposed to online ordered prices. Also, I already have a DVD burner that I plan to be re-using; works great. P.S. Newegg.com does not ship to Canada. P.S.S. CDN -> USD conversion provided by http://www.xe.com. At time of writing, conversion was 1.00 CDN -> 0.902426 USD. Jam it back in, in the dark.

I thought the GS line of nVidia Graphics were on the lower end of the spectrum? I'd change the 7600GS to a GT if possible, I dunno about the price up there, but there are some here in the US for $150.....
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
What do you want the machine for? The 805 is a very good price/performance chip, but it's performance isn't all too great if you hope to game on it. You'd be better served moving to a higher end machine if that's your intention. Or you could overclock the bejeesus out of it, as it seems to handle that reasonably well.
The video card is so-so. If you game, get a 7600GT (Or better if you want to spend more. I would got for the GT) If you don't game, then get a much cheaper card. If you want a simple desktop, then the 7600 is overkill. If you want a gaming machine then you are going to be hampered by the 805 and the GS. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'm aiming for a bit of a gaming rig but at the same time I don't want to spend too much. I also don't want to get left behind in what video cards are good and what aren't, etc.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I recently built myself a machine which is/will be a semi gaming machine. I wanted good enough performance for a while, dual core, quiet, and reliable. This is mostly for work etc. but I also play games, though don't want to pay the huge premium for top of the line gaming stuff. I got:
Sonata II (Quiet, reliable PSU, value) Athlon X2 3800+ (Best price/performance in a CPU that will be adequate for future games) Asus A8N-VM motherboard (Onboard video, no SLI) Seagate HDD. 1GB Ram. This is a good solution for me, but not ideal for everyone. I don't have/want any games that would benefit from something better than the onboard nVidia 6100. I'll grab a good price performance GPU when Spore or something that I'm interested in comes out, and by waiting save a bit of money. If I were to buy a card today it'd be Gigabyte's fanless 7600GT* as it's fast enough for the future, and good value for money. I picked the bottom of the line X2 as it's the best value in AMD's dual core lineup. The low end Intel dual cores are great value, but not fast enough for future games etc. So, this machine was more expensive than the one you propose, but it's CPU is much faster so I don't 'need' to replace it as soon. *This thing probably has a premium on it due to the fanless design, I'd be willing to pay it, someone who doesn't care about noise would be better served getting a regular 7600GT and save a few bucks.
