Upcoming Anime Series: Fall 2006 Edition

Again, swiped from SomethingAwful's ADTRW forum. I hope they don't come to kick my ass.

These are probably good so you're not allowed to make contentless posts about how everything sucks: Chevalier, Death Note, Kanon, 009-1, Ayakashi Ayashi, GEASS

Things with actual dates:
08/19 Chevalier - The Rose of Versailles, but the crossdressing happens in the opposite direction, and there's some secret society and a demon.

08/20 Riri to Kaeru to (Oto) - A guy goes to an amusement park and meets a talking frog, and then.. some stuff I don't understand and an adventure occurs.
This is on Animax so it's an art film.

09/01 Ghost in the Shell S.A.C Solid State Society - Pay-per-view showing of the S.A.C movie.

09/08 Lupin III: Seven Days Rhapsody - Probably just a one-shot, but still, Lupin III.

09/08 Black Blood Brothers - Vampire show. That guy doesn't look at all like Alucard, no way.

09/16 Silk Road - Shounen Yuto - 3D CGI kids' show

09/17 & 09/18 Taiyou no Mukishiroku

09/22 UFO Princess Walküre 4 - Somehow Arco's fault.

09/28 Pokémon Diamond & Pearl

09/-- (Kimi ga Nozomu Eien) Ayu-Mayu Theater
This is actually an internet radio broadcast, as far as I can tell. Why is it in the TV listings? Don't ask me, I just translate them.

10/01 La Corda D'oro ~Primo Passo~ (Kin'iro no Corda) - Quite possibly a shoujo romance about a girl who plays violin.

10/03 D.Gray-man

10/03 Death Note

10/04 Negima (Mahou Sensei Magister Negi Magi etc) - Animated by SHAFT (Tsukuyomi, PPD), not the retarded chimpanzees that did the last one.

10/05 Sasami & The Magical Girl Club 2 - The first one wasn't any good, in case you were wondering.

10/05 Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuki wo! - That means "Mamoru was blessed by a goddess", but nobody cares.
High school romantic comedy possible magical powers involved silly hairstyles etc

10/05 Kanon (Key/Kyoto Animation) - Same production team as AIR and Haruhi, better character design than AIR.
This is a 26-episode remake of the last production.

10/05 Asatte no Houkou - Triad-bait. I'm not confident enough to translate the plot summary.

10/05 009-1 - In the grim future of anime there is only war and a spy drama.
This is based on a work by Shōtarō Ishinomori, which is very good, but it's actually completely unrelated to Cyborg 009.

10/07 Pururun! Shizuka-chan - I... don't know.

10/07 Ayakashi Ayashi - A strange tale of the Tempou period (1831-1845).
BONES' new 50-episode show.
Clearly a ripoff of Gun Musashi, which was clearly a ripoff of David Gonterman: http://www.commuterbarnacle.com/gonterman/441.html
(By the way, this Shou Aikawa guy is clearly some kind of hero.)

But anyway,
10/07 Jigoku Shoujo 2nd - The last series ended up being very good. You just stopped watching before that.

10/07 History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi - I have the vague feeling I should know what this is.

October, but no more accurate date:

Kekkai-shi - You know, like Mushi-shi, but he -shis barriers instead of Mushi.
I'm pretty sure I read a chapter of this in Animerica and that it's shounen fighting.

Lovely Idol - I'm just going to pretend this doesn't exist.

Katekyoushi Hitman REBORN!

Usahana & Kerokerokeroppi - Two different things, combined into one entry because they have no website and are both named after Hello Kitty characters. (I have a perfectly good reason to know this okay)

Hataraki Man - From a 1989 hit fashion-industry manga.

Happiness! - Dating game adaptation, but with more annoying 4chan meme because one of the girls is a boy.

Busou Renkin/Weapon Alchemist - Shounen Jump manga: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busou_Renkin

Tokimeki Memorial ~Only Love~ - Dating game again. This one's FAMOUS, though. Even parodied in Excel Saga!

Yamato Nadesico 7 Change - Apparently not actually about anorexia. "Wallflower" in the US.
http://forums.somethingawful.com/sho...#post313675713

Yoake mae yori ruri-iro na Crescent Love - Great name. Unfortunately, it's a dating game, but at least the female lead is named "Feena Pham Ashura Ito".

CODE GEASS - Lelouch of the Rebellion - Really tall people (designs by CLAMP) fight each other in giant robots (designs by Sunrise). Bad trailer: http://www.geass.jp/promo.html
In case you're paying attention to staff, practically everyone involved who isn't CLAMP worked on Planetes.

Otome wa Oboku-sama ni Koishiteru - Princess Princess.

Pumpkin Scissors - GONZO.

~Gift~ eternal rainbow - They're trying to sneak Da Capo up on us, aren't they.

Giniro no Orinshisu (no website) - Japanese Wikipedia says it's a light novel, and that it has illustrations by Hirashi "I can only draw one face" Hirai. No plot description.

Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohani hoheto - A picture of a guy with a sword.

Bartender - Yep, a bartender. He's tending bar.

Artificial Insect Kabutoborg - kids' fighting show

Ghost Hunt - Horror, with no real website. The author won a manga prize alongside Mushi-shi... for another manga.

Marginal Prince ~Gekkeiju no Oujitachi~ - bishounen

Movies

(These dates are pretty much useless to us, since they're not DVD release dates, but those aren't available yet.)
09/17 Mahou Sensei Negima! Summer Edition
10/01 Aim for the Top! & Aim for the Top 2! Combined Movie - D:
(I can't actually tell if this is one movie or two back-to-back. It's showing in Akihabara somewhere on that date if you want to report on it.)

It is a mystery
Bleach Memories of Nobody
New Space Battleship Yamato * Revival Compilation - This should answer all your questions.
Mushi-shi - Live-action, directed by Katsuhiro Otomo

Makoto Shinkai's movie 5 Centimeters per Second comes out in 2007. Here's a very pretty trailer: http://a.scarywater.net/triad/[Triad...er.mp4.torrent

OVA

Really, only NegativeZero cares about these, but here they are.
08/25 Stratos 4 Log Book
09/22 Stratos 4 Advance CODE 207
09/27 Kaleido Star
"Sometime this fall" Strike Witches - Like Yukikaze, but moe!

"This isn't even fall season" bonus extra:
11/29 Maria-sama ga Miteru 3rd Season, OVA 1

Oh, maybe the Densha Otoko Mina extra thing (http://www.gonzo.co.jp/title/mina/) will come out. Probably not though.

Bonus post-fall announcements:
Galaxy Angel II - Really. Entirely new cast too.
Kujibiki Unbalance
Super Robot Wars Original Generation
Nodame Cantabile (paging Hildgrim) - This may actually be live-action though.
Studio GAINAX - Maiking Breakthrough Gurren-Lagann
IDOLM@STER
Giant Robo
Emma, a Victorian Romance, second season - This is based entirely on one magazine article, but I think they just don't bother updating their website.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha 3rd StrikerS

Yessss, I will be looking forward to

1) Death Note
2) Negima *err* this one is definetly more cutish, however will it take the same plot approach?
3) Kanon (definetly want to see the art for this one)
4) Busou Renkin (Holy crap, this one is animated? Must watch)
5) Ghost-Hunt

Most of the movie list are expected and heard of since last season... but definetly some good ones to look forward this time round

Thanks for the update BigBlah

The art for Kanon is really good. At least Yuuichi doesn't look like the girls. Lets not forget our little friend Hitman Reborn. That should be interesting.

D.Grayman and Death Note will make up for Naruto and Bleach's crap.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Wait, what? I thought Wallflower was Perfect Girl Evolution. Is this the same series? Why the hell give it yet another name ;_;

Either way, I generally don't pay any attention for what a new season brings with it, but there's quite a few here that I'm interested in seeing.

Second season of Victorian Romance Emma, naturally. The first season was wonderful, but because it stopped so suddenly (storywise, right after the second volume of the manga), and knowing how the absolutely enchanting manga goes so much further, another season is more than welcome.

I'm actually quite interested in Kanon. I never played or read about the story of the original h-game, nor follow any of the other anime adaptions, but it always interested me. Perhaps this will be a good introduction to the title.

The Stand Alone Complex movie is a must, a new Giant Robo title sounds promising and a live-action Katsuhiro Otomo film intrigues me to no end. It's high time I watch the Mushi-shi anime anyway.

Kanon is based on a hentai game? I'll pass. I doubt anything based on hentai could actually be good.

GitS:SAC SSS is a must. I'm in love with the SAC series.

Chevalier sounds promising. Is this the series with the sexually ambiguous male lead?

I'm interested in Death Note - at least up until the part of the manga that bored me.

Ayakashi Ayashi - it's by BONES. That's enough reason to check it out.

Busou Renkin/Weapon Alchemist - From the creator of Kenshin. Definitely interested.

Pumpkin Scissors - ??? It's by Gonzo, I should check it out.

CODE GEASS - Lelouch of the Rebellion - CLAMP, Sunrise and Planetes people. Oh, and mecha. It's worth a shot.

I like how I still haven't watched anything from the previous two seasons. Well, I started Fate/Stay Night, which is quite good, but I haven't seen anything other than that.

You know, most famous/reputable series that have their roots in an h-game are famous/reputable at all because their plot is worthwhile. No one cares if cute girls get banged. There are plenty of pure hentai releases for that. People care if it's got a compelling story, though!

See: Kanon (the first series), Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, Shingetsutan Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, etc.

Spoiler:
For your information, there are non-h versions of VisualArt's/KEY games (Kanon, AIR, etc), which means the stories are good enough to stand on their own.

The thing is, most h-games turned anime tend to be heavily relationship-centric, with a few exceptions such as Shingetsutan Tsukihime, F/SN and Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito which have more of an action/adventure element.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is a good series to start with, if you want to check out this genre.

I recommend you drop this series after episode nine, or the mid-teens at the latest.

For this upcoming season, the only show I may consider watching is Jigoku Shoujo. Actually, that's a lie, I'm just going to shoot myself in the foot and follow it considering I did stick with it to the end of the first season. I'm rather curious as to whether this season's going to be thirteen or twenty-some episodes and how much of it will be filler. I guess a twenty-some episode season two wouldn't really surprise me since I had my surprise already when I heard they were going to make a second season after the first season ended as I couldn't believe ratings were good for such a filler-esque show.

Galaxy Angel 2? Woot.

I'm also looking foreward to Kujian. That's being released in October according to its official page. The new Negima should be good, too. I may give Kanon a spin as well.

Chances are you're already watching a few without realizing it. Utawarerumono, Air, Shuffle, To Heart and Pia Carrot were all based on h-games.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien was a compelling series to begin with, but far too much miserable drama for my taste in the end. While game fans felt the anime version was lacking a little, I really enjoyed Tsukihime (not to mention want to play the game for the other storylines as soon as the translation patch is released).

Oh and I guess I should add Pumpkin Scissors and Strike Witches to my list of titles to look into.

I think I saw a promotional poster for that. I'm still waiting for Lunar's release of GB2/TWN2 episode 6.

Why does Nono and Noriko look so awesome in that poster.

At any rate, seeing the GITS SAC movie is a must, despite me getting somewhat lost and bored in 2nd Gig.

The rest of the series there I'm not interested in as I'm stilling trying to get through a dozen and half anime series from years prior, so adding more anime to my back log list won't help.

Likewise, although I need to find a copy of the game first.

As far as h-game based series go, I strongly suggest watching Shuffle. It's my favorite of that brand of anime.

im gonna be watching these for sure in this order

D.Gray-man (got the first two vols of the manga, if its anything like the manga it should be bad ass)

Death Note (finished the manga and waiting to see the live action movie, actually i just want to see how they pull this off without it being boring as it has a shit load of mind thinking talks in the manga)

Negima (first season made me love shojo anime again isn't the 2nd season suppose to be more serious? :s)

Kanon (saw the 13 episode series its gold i would be happy to watch this and cry my eyes out when it comes to it)

Jigoku Shoujo 2nd (i hope there is actually a really big story behind jigoku shoujo this time plus i love seeing ppl get revenge lawl)

Busou Renkin (the guy who did kenshin eh...we'll see if its any good)

Ghost Hunt (i love ghost and this is my wild card out of this season)

The plot isn't that great and the protagonist annoys me to no end. A lot of people seem to like the series, so I guess I just have different tastes than most. If you don't know the intricacies of the game's plot, you'll probably enjoy the show more.

Reviewing the list, I think I may consider Kanon. I was able to get my friend to watch AIR, but when he asked me to watch Kanon, I never did and, to be honest, didn't really have any intentions to. I feel a little bad about it...so I guess now's the time to atone for my sin.

The former is just a re-release of the original Gunbuster, and not a brand new movie, right? If I remember correctly, Aim for the Top 2 has no connection at all to the original Gunbuster.

And that's a shame, because the original was excellent. I still haven't seen other animes emulate the visual style of the final episode.

Is there really no other news on Giant Robo? What other series has the company invovled in GR done? I can't tell if they'll continue the OVA story or start fresh, but considering the look of the visual style, I'm betting it's the latter.

It might not even be directly related to the Giant Robo anime, but the original old manga it was made from. It would be kinda tricky to continue from where the first OVA ended too, so I'm guessing starting over is what they plan.

No, screw that. I refuse to have a non-superpowered GR where Big Fire is a group of lame aliens. Bring back Big Nine and the Magnificent Ten or just don't bother.

And I felt the teaser gave enough material to start a new series. I know I'm not the only one who wanted to see
Spoiler:
Big Fire
in action.

Also, wasn't Giant Robo based on a manga series that was based on the live series? If I recall correctly, the manga reworked the live series by making Big Fire a terrorist group and establishing most of the characters shown in the OVA. The OVAs started off later in the series (which is obvious since most of the characters are already established, and make references to previous events).

Well the point is there are three things they'll need to make this succeed. One is to keep the superpowered humans along with the robots. Two is to keep the retro art style, and three is the excellent soundtrack.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
