The WHAT THE HELL SHIN in review

Okay, let's just put out of the way the quibbling over whether the decade is properly starting from the 0 year or the 1 year. Virtually everyone simply takes the ordering to start from 0, even if it isn't technically correct.

So onto the main topic.

The decade's got roughly 10 days left, depending on where you are in the world.

What are your thoughts on how these 10 years have passed?

They could be personal, they could be about the world in general, maybe topics more specific like how music has changed or the state of technology.

Share your thoughts on what 2000 to 2009 means to you.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Well.... in 2000... I was in Grade 10.... The year before my self-pity/depression stage... High School was a fraking rollercoaster, from the lows of Grade 11 to the highs of O.A.C.

University was great overall and I was pretty happy to graduate a few times during the decade. Since the last ten years pretty much contains my entire High School and University careers, my thoughts on the past 10 years is that I went through A LOT of school.... essays, exams, classes, all that wonderful stuff that prepares you for "the world".

I had plenty of self growth as well. Learned many new things, such as with my involvement with the Emo Speedway since 2004. 2009 has probably been my worst year overall, with several positive things that happened in between... I guess in the end, every year kind of averaged itself out. 2002 and 2003 were pretty rough, losing a best friend, and my last remaining grandparents two days apart. Katy passing away in 2003 was pretty rough... I haven't had anything like that since then which has been good, but it just delays the fact that someone close to me will die again soon.... :S

I have found the United States has become very short-sighted over the past ten years, which I hope is starting to change. As for music and movies, not a lot of new originality, but there were plenty of examples of new approaches and such.

2000 to 2009 meant personal growth, change, adjustment, and preparation... I can only imagine what the next ten years will be like....

How ya doing, buddy?

I'm 24 now, so when this decade started I was 14.

The changes in my life involved this transformative stage of my life moreso than the actual time it took place in.

At any rate, technology has made us all slaves. Ipod isn't enough. We must have Ipod video. 2 megapixels will not do. We must have 10. We must have computer keyboards on our cell phones.
It was bad enough when it was just brand name shoes and Mustangs. It's hard to penetrate to the actual emotional depths of anybody anymore past their newfangled fads.

As far as world matters, I would mind the war so much if we were actually KILLING something with all that money we're spending on it. That and the market crash pretty much sucked. Way to go, republicans. Maybe now Americans will eventually see what it's like for all the poor people in other countries.

How ya doing, buddy?

The last decade wasn't called "the noughties", Shin. That's what seventeen year old girls call the last decade.

Pretty sure you just got the idea from the latest issue of Tiger Beat.

Pretty sure it's been called that consistantly for the last ten years over here mate by just about everyone. Gay though it sounds, it's far better than the "2000's" which is just incorrect on many levels. I believe the next ten years are destined to be called the teenies, which somehow manages to be even more homosexual.

Can't wait til we start installing this shit directly to our brains. I personally look forward to becoming a robot. I fully expect this in the next 10 years. Scientists are just slacking off, imo.

Also, when this decade began, I was 17. I'm pretty sure in the last 10 years, I really didn't do anything...

Graduated high school... got a 2-year degree that I don't even use. I got a job that's decent enough/tolerable. I almost have a second degree I probably won't use either...

I should probably start applying myself or something. Gawd... This decade stuff is rough on my sense of accomplishment.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

2009 - Still in college. Masters degree, and in an ongoing relationship that I <3, but not much changes.

2005 - that year when I did nothing but play shmups on MAME

2006 - First serious job, hate of Portugal cemented

2007 - Embraced communism

2008 - moved away from home, got 'involved' with various 'factions'

2000: Met a girl. Asked her out. Received harshest rejection in history of mankind. Slashed her tires. Now we're even.

2001: Met another girl. Wanted to bitchslap the motherloving hell out of her.

2002: Fucked that girl.

2003: Took girl to Maine. I enjoyed the scenery and visiting my extended family. She enjoyed playing Pokemon.

2004: Grandfather died. Mother died. Close friend died. Took girl to Hawaii to recover. I enjoyed the scenery and the food. She enjoyed playing Pokemon.

2005: Fucked the girl some more. Had nothing else to do.

2006: Sensed trouble when girl went to Spain without me. Pretty sure she had fun playing Pokemon there too.

2007: Dumped girl for becoming cold, emotionless and not very good at Pokemon, even after all that practice around the globe. Met another girl. Liked her a lot. Learned about BONESTEEL. Lucky to be alive.

2008: Continued ineffectual flirtation with third girl. Distracted BONESTEEL with media blitz. Second girl went to Japan...to play Pokemon in its homeland. Also got a lung upgrade but that's not important.

2009: Flirtations with third girl far more successful but BONESTEEL remains an obstacle despite identifying his weakness for stupid internet broads. Stopped talking to second girl altogether. Ran into first girl. She asked me out for coffee. Gave her harshest revenge rejection in history of mankind. Now we're truly even. Went home and played some Pokemon.

I always think that nothing really happened to me in this decade (because for some reason I think that my entire childhood happened in the 90s) but really, EVERYTHING happened in this decade.

Spoiler:

2000 - halfway through freshman year of high school. Disliked hanging around with girls still, was rejected by the guy I had a crush on since middle school, and surprisingly got over it in about 20 minutes. Guess it wasn't the real thing.

2001 - sophomore year... made it into advanced orchestra, had to divvy up my friend crowd three ways, because all my friends hated each other. Made it into Regional orchestra, placed high and my orch teacher told my parents I had to have private lessons. Also, went to Italy with the Youth Symphony, designed their tour logo, got lost in Florence.

2002 - junior year... first year with what I thought would be my scary Russian teacher; made it into the upper orchestra in Regionals. Won a poster contest for Mardi Gras in my town. Auditioned for the National High School Orchestra, got in. Went to Columbus, OH.

2003 - Did CSSSA at CalArts in Valencia. Got pissed at the animation industry for shitting all over 2D animation/discovered that I didn't want to go into animation. Listened to a lot of awesome music, met a lot of crazy cool people. Did All-State Orchestra. Was accepted into the local symphony as a violist. Started thinking about majoring in music......

2004-2005 - Went to the local community college. Teachers battled over which major I was going to choose: art vs. music. Took more art classes because the classes were better. Ended up going with music. Auditioned for three schools: UT, KSU and UOP, had a lesson with McInnes at USC but didn't like it. Was instantly accepted to Austin and fell in love with the teacher/city.
Also, went to England/Ireland/Wales with Youth Symphony. Mother came along and made it annoying.

2005-2008 - GONE TO TEXAS. Basically my entire life and personality did a 180... it started with my grandpa dying 3 weeks before I moved to Austin, and then I proceeded to hang out with musicians for 4 years and take viola lessons from a big gay Australian pirate. Met my gay husband, got a degree, went on a month tour of Europe, met a few GFFers in-person (hay Dull & Xpander) etc. etc. etc.

2009 - Auditioned for grad school at Peabody/Johns-Hopkins, Minnesota State, Rice and UC/CCM. Accepted at three, went with the one that gave me a 75% scholarship (CCM). Currently doing a Master's in viola performance, trying to like Cincinnati as a city (but kind of failing). Trying to feel like I can play the viola.

Condensed: At the beginning of the decade, I assumed I would be an artist/animator, was obsessed with anime/Japan/learning Japanese and hung out with a bunch of gamers and fantasy/romance-novel junkies. At the end, I'm a musician that does graphic art on the side, doesn't have time to watch TV let alone play video games or watch anime, and is obsessed with Norway/Norwegians/learning Norwegian and German.

Normally they're filled with pulque but, yeah, we'll go with tequila if it makes you feel comfortable.
I've always wanted to try pulque... never remembered to look for it when I was down south, and now I'm in the land of nothing Mexican, so it'll have to wait until I head that direction again.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

For the first decade I can fully remember, I don't think I did too badly. Started New Year's in Scotland, went pescetarian, did well in school (mostly), first times drunk, stoned and high, got into some excellent music, seen some great bands, had three long-term boyfriends, first few times on holiday just with friends, moved out of my parent's house, pulled myself out of my insular shell, started learning an instrument seriously, went to a festival for the first time... If all goes well, this year should at least end in Scotland too.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
