So, my father's car broke.

He has to work on Sunday nights, and since he can't find someone who can give him a ride, he chose to walk the distance.

I would be asking for advice on how to talk him out of it, but he has already left an hour ago since he has to walk 9 miles. So instead, tell me about the times you made stupid decisions which seemed good at the time.

I decided it'd be fun to walk to this one theater that turned out to be like 7 miles away. Then I had to walk back...

Last summer, I was down in a particularly rural part of southwest France, and desperate for internet access. So desperate that I walked an hour in each direction to the nearest town for dial-up several times a week. Mmm, melanoma risk.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

GFF knows such an instance quite well. By this point, my life is a running series of gags dealing in various awkward situations I shoulda just called her instead.

I got pissed off after a tennis match once so I decided to run home instead of drive home to blow off some steam. Little did I know I was like 20 miles from my house and it was almost 100 degrees outside. I swear I almost died when I got home after running for what seemed like forever.

You father is probably going to be (was) late as most people can only walk somewhere between 2 1/2 - 5 miles per hour. Even with a quick jog he would only be able to cover a little under 8 miles. It would take him running at a pace of ~6:00 min/mile to get to work in under an hour, something that would be extremely difficult for an average person for such a distance. Then he would probably be all sweaty and smelly so they would tell him to go home.

Well, on the plus side he did give himself three hours to make the trip. I think he wound up being late anyway.

At least he learned his lesson and will not attempt this again. The car is in the shop as we speak.

I think the most epic bad decision I've made was driving home from work when my muffler was dragging on the ground. At the time, I was doing an 80 mile commute, which is the source of my problems. I clearly couldn't go on a freeway safely, so I drove 35 mph on surface roads. It took 4 hours to get home, all told.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

It seemed like a good idea to trust my memory on when my final exams were last semester.

Until I showed up for the last day of finals 3 hours late for one final as the second final (which I had not studied for figuring I'd get time after the FIRST ONE... that I'd just MISSED) was starting.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

One time, I thought it was a good idea to partition my hard drive without backing it up. I just read a review from PCWorld and thought "oh this article from says PartitionMagic is very reliable in terms of dividing your hard drive, that's what I just need!". 40 minutes later, I lost all my files.

Or is this thread only limited to topics with "walking" and "driving" in it?

And if he didn't want to spring the money for a taxi, doesn't that mean he wanted to walk instead of spending money? Or did he really think that walking 9 miles was faster than a taxi?

Oh and more on topic I once caught a falling knife. At the time I really didn't want to damage the floor. Turns out this was probably a really dumb plan.

Shoulda hang glided with impromptu materials? I mean, the way you make it sound is that your pops was begrudged to fix his car - which was problematic well enough in advance - because he was sure he could foot it. But if this was more of an immediate crisis, the options are pretty limited. Overpay for cab fare or walk a stupidly long distance. You seem to be equally against both, so I have to assume it wouldn't have been endangering his employment if he called out of work until his ride was fixed? It's not too clear a picture.

More on topic, I took a job in my teenage years at a seafood distributor in the summer. The job entailed sorting used pallets into scrap or salvageable outside in the back lot. Used seafood packaging pallets. Outside. In summer.

I'll see your used seafood packaging pallets and raise you cleaning a chicken hutch of chicken shit in summer. Voluntarily, when I could have chosen to go and chill out with some donkeys. The hutch was also tiny and occasionally filled with angry chickens.

Well, his car was only noticed to be broken on Sunday afternoon (by which I mean it didn't work in a bad way). I begged him not to go to work! He has vacation time he could have used. I would've also made the trip out there to drive him to work, as I also have the vacation time to use. I would've bitched about it the entire time but it's family, you know?
