Yggdra Union: Now with remakes!
![]() Today was the release date for the PSP port of Sting's SRPG Yggdra Union. For those unfamiliar, Yggdra Union was originally a game for the GBA and is a sequel to Riviera: The Promised Land. It focused around Princess Yggdra and her country's struggle against the Bronquian empire. The game was notoriously hard, with only a small handful of the game's 50+ stages that could be considered "easy." The PSP version offers a remastered soundtrack, redrawn art and sprites, voiced dialog (Dual audio tracks, too), two difficulty levels (A Normal mode and the original GBA difficulty, aptly named "Hard"), as well as new maps, characters, and endings. The gamestop pre-order bonus was also the whole 56-track remastered soundtrack, a nice break from the gimped selections that are part of so many other JRPG releases. I didn't see a thread about either the GBA version or this, so share your experiences or curiosities about either incarnation of the game here! Some screens that I horked from RPGamer because I'm lazy as hell:

If only I had a PSP, I would completely get this game. I had a crapload of fun with this.
If anything, I'm gonna see if a friend of mine could get me the pre-order soundtrack. How ya doing, buddy? |

Yggdra Union's a pretty good game. I really like the idea of lessened difficulty in this version. I heard the GBA one was KILLER in that regard, ugh. Hard games are fine, (I like the Fire Emblem series, for example) but I like having the option here. Sounds good. Hopefully they didn't make it TOO easy.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
They lowered the difficulty? I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand, I like my games hard. On the other hand, I got my ass handed to me BADLY in the GBA version.
Either way, the screens look sweet. I'll probably wait until it drops in price though. I had considered preordering it for the soundtrack bonus, but then I realized I couldn't really remember much of the soundtrack. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I'd figure anyone who played the GBA version who gets this game would play it on Hard mode anyway. You've done it once before, you sure as hell could do it again.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
Well, I'm up to the Rose houses (ugh ankh cannons) and I haven't noticed any change in the difficulty. I heard that "Normal" only means that characters that are left out of battles restore some morale, but that really doesn't mean jack for Yggdra/Minalor, who are always in battles.
The only major change I've noticed is that the Refreshment card can restore morale now, making it actually useful as opposed to the worthless GBA card. Edit: I swear to God they've reworked how the chance of critical hits works or something because I've gotten crit at least once per battlefield. It's starting to get really annoying. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]()
