Melbourne Considers Extending Indiginous Lockout

Brumby open to 2am lockout extension - Breaking News - National - Breaking News

Quote:
Victorian Premier John Brumby says he has an open mind about extending Melbourne's controversial indigenous bar lockout but has also talked up other measures to combat alcohol-fuelled violence.

A three-month trial lockout affecting four inner Melbourne municipalities ends on Tuesday and will be subject to a review.

Under the lockout, Aboriginal patrons cannot enter or re-enter pubs and nightclubs after 8pm (AEST).

Venue operators have rallied in support the lockout, with 120 signing a petition to extend the trial.

Carlton pub manager Richard Branch says that the ban has helped curb violence against well-behaved customers.

"I know that people like to have a whinge about these sort of things but at the end of the day it's the blackfellas who are causing most of the trouble."

Mr Brumby, who toured Melbourne's late night venues in the early hours of Saturday morning, said the review would take into account police statistics on arrests, assaults and charges as well as hospital admissions.

"We'll get all of that evidence together and make a decision then. That is completely consistent with what we've always said would occur, that is we'll have the trial and then we'll evaluate it," he said.

"I have a completely open mind in the future as to whether we continue with a lockout, similar lockout, maybe a better targeted lockout, maybe a broader lockout ... or perhaps no lockout at all."

Mr Brumby said the onus was also on licensees to serve alcohol more responsibly and on Aboriginal patrons to try and keep their temperament in check.

He said troublemakers were a minority and there were other measures in place to help clean up Melbourne's streets, including more police, 24 hour bans on unruly patrons and a freeze on new liquor licences.

Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said the only way to fix the problem was to put more police on the streets.

"The lockout's been a shambles, it's been mangled from the start," he said.

"More than half the venues have been exempted, (there is) no additional police, other than those shifted from other regions, and no additional prison cells to house these troublemakers."

Well, this is news to me. Another reason to hate our State Premier, then :/.

I've heard of the curfew in which all bars in Melbourne would close at 2am, but it's been a massive failure. The intention of the lockout was the lessen the violence among the streets of Melbourne, but the curfew seemed to have increased it.

So much for the "Indigenous Reconciliation" we had last year :/. Due to the limited amount of support Australia has for its Indigenous citizens, a lot of them turn to alcohol, drugs or abuse. Health cover and general support for Aboriginals is limited as well, not to mention an unintentional "zoning" of the group.

I think the lockout towards Indigenous people is borderline racist, but it is a fact that many Aboriginals do turn to a lot of alcohol because of the oppression society has upon them. They also do get rowdy, but to target them specifically for a lockout is ludicrous. What about the Redneck Aussies (bogans)? What about other ethic groups, some of which are notorious for bad behavior due to drinking?

In conclusion, Brumby, your time is over. You'll be replaced in the next state elections.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

LOL BRADY, did you copy this article from the link you posted?

Check it again. I think you might have been had somewhere along the line. This is most definitely not true.

The article Bradylama quoted is a fake, whether it was actually copied from the site he linked to I don't know, but it's untrue.

Here's what is posted there now:

Trolling other members is frowned upon, yes. Trolling landmasses is perfectly fine though. You'll notice that Brady has accused nobody here directly of being a racialist, anyone taking umbrage with his comments is probably a racist themselves and not the kind of person we would encourage to post here at Gamingforce Interactive Forums. Kindly take your bigotry elsewhere.

Sir my only complaint was that the Moderator was not upholding the principles of not trolling.

So, if you're not with us, then you're against us? That's BULLSHIT "logic" and is a fallacy, and it doesn't even make sense!

Look, if you guys are doing this as some juvenile 'joke' then tell me now because all I can see here are moderators abusing their positions and throwing about insults.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

DN, this is usually the point where someone will ask if you're new here.

But we all know you're not.

Are you just having a particularly thickheaded day?

Also, let's be honest: the "rule" against trolling hasn't been enforced since 2004.

How ya doing, buddy?

Well, I haven't gotten much sleep in the past couple of days if that's what you mean.

That's the core problem then. *Takes a deep breath* Okay, so this is all just fun and games I suppose, but I'm going to take a page from LeHah's book here and suggest that we DO enforce the rule against trolling.

Actually, we do enforce the trolling rule, the problem is that there's hundreds of bed-wetting gaylords here who think that insulting someone is trolling. It's not, it's insulting someone.

Trolling is needlessly attacking someone out of context in such a way as to lessen their board experience. If someone went into every thread you posted in just to post "DN you're a fucking gaylord" with no reference to the topic, they'd be trolling. If someone once or twice said to you "DN, you've completely missed the point of this thread and as such, you're a fucking gaylord" that would be insulting you, against which there are no rules currently or historically.

Unprovoked, persistant attacks is trolling, the occasional insult or even persistant insults, if they are based on a person's posts and pertinant to the thread is completely allowed and in some cases, actively encouraged. In other words, we'll start enforcing "Trolling" when you lot learn what it is, deal?

How ya doing, buddy?

Once I had to use a plastic kiddy chair at a pub because it was so packed, it was trivia night so I didn't feel like standing around like a clown. It was very racist towards my arse as the chair was difficult to sit on.
