Legendary photography thread

I have had a digital camera for a very long while now, but I never really started using it until about 2 weeks ago.
Photography has always interested me, so I went around town trying to take some pictures of things that really cought my eye. After looking at peoples photography topics here, it inspired me to put some of my shots here.

Now, I don't know anything about photography or how to get amazing shots or anything like that. If any of you can give me advice that could possibly help me become a better photographer I would appreciate it very much.

These are all really well done. I think my favorites are a tie between Graveyard and Stairs. However, all of them except Stairs has the main focus centered. Generally centering a big no-no. There's this thing called the "Rule of Third" Where basically you put put a grid on the photo(dividing it up into thirds) and you put the focus on one of the intersecting points, rather than the center. I think if you cropped it, so the Graveyard, the headstone, were further to the right, it would be more powerful perhaps.

Great job though!

How ya doing, buddy?

I think that the compositions are well done, in part because you're new to photography, and your camera as well. However, the photos are over-exposed, meaning there was too much light being let into the lens when you snapped the photo.

What make and model camera is it?

The Rule of Thirds is the simplest and easiest "rule" to abide by when framing/arranging your subjects into your viewfinder. Nine equal parts, and usually if you have something like water, land, and sky in your photo, they'd want to have each take 1/3 of the photo's space. Bending the rules here is fun, because if the water is more interesting, give it 2/3 and the land/sky 1/3. It depends on every situation.

For framing your subjects, if you photograph people, check what's going on around you. Don't always put them in the center of your photograph. Even the Rule of Thirds can apply to a person's portrait of their face. A quote I found from a magazine "If the subject isn't particularly attractive, blow it up the size of the frame."

I can upload a few of my favorite magazines if you want. I consider myself lucky that I memorized their material and can put it to use right away. I can see how it would be difficult if I didn't have a genuine interest in photography to learn all the little quirks of my camera.

I really need to look into and learn more about my camera. I haven't done anything much with digital cameras as I was usually using disposable for everything, and I regret that now.

Thanks for the bits of advice, I don't/didn't know any rules, just shot pictures that I thought looked different than what I normally see people take around here.

I would be greatful if you were to post something from a magazing for information. Any information I can get will be very helpful.

I will post the pictures I like now, and when I go shooting again I will take your guys advice and see if you guys think I am doing a little better. Here are a few more pictures

Boyfriend and Girlfriend
White Flowers
Beach Sunset

I also want to ask- When is the best time to use a black/white picture? I used it in the graveyard pictures because I figures lack of color would represent that there was no life there. What are some better situations so I don't go overboard with a ton of ridiculous black and white?

This is the camera I am using

It's something that you can buy for 150 dollars at typical store, it's nothing special at all, but it's better than what I usually have.

Those photos are rad as heck ;__; You definitely need a better camera. An SLR camera is one with interchangeable lenses, and a full (or near full) range of manual settings. Using the right lens really boils down to a couple of decisions: are you shooting in low-light and how far is the subject from me? You don't have that option with a point-and-shoot.

Learning how to control all of the manual settings on an SLR can be a chore and it will probably take a while before you really find out how they affect your photo. Do you have a camera rental store to rent an SLR from? If not, you could be a prick like me and buy a camera from a retail store and return it in two weeks. ;(

B&W - It's up to you whether or not you shoot black and white. It draws a very different mood versus color. I consider myself very conservative when it comes to this. I don't like converting color photographs to black and white because it's technically a "fake." I'll set my camera to B&W mode if I want to shoot like that. But, like I said, it's your photo.

Here are set of 4 PDFs that deal with the major aspects of creating a photo. Feel free to ask any questions on the material.

There isn't a camera rental store anywhere around here that I know of. If I were to get a different better quality camera though, I would probably end up buying it rather than having to return it.

The only way I can take B&W photo's is through the camera options. I don't have anything like photoshop on my computer to touch up any of the images I have, although it would be very fun to mess with.
Usually I give my photo's to people and have them add my ideas using photoshop. For example This picture I wanted to poke fun at a friend for always being sad and depressed, so I had someone else do the editing.

~Thanks for posting the link, I have downloaded the document and I will soon check it out when I have more time.

Just remember that if you use Photoshop, it's to slightly enhance your photos. The real skill is by getting as best possible shot using the combination of settings on your camera. (a fun edit is fine, too :P)

Wow, I have been gone from this thread for awhile. Went through a breakup and all that crappy stuff, but now I am back with many more pictures.

Someone even offered to buy some pictures or have me take pictures of them in an interesting setting, so I guess I am doing okay with my photography.

Here are some more for your viewing
Cold Grave Watcher
Grave Angel
Female Jesus
Flower near cliff
Funky ole me
Reflections

Enjoy what I have I suppose, I try to pull something interesting out every once in awhile.

It's not bad but like Render said, they are either under or over exposed. Try to add a clearer focuspoint and more depth to make them look interesting, because even with such a camera it's possible to make professional looking photographs. This is a great site you should definitely look into.

Sucks that you have a point and shoot, but if that's all you've got then you just gotta work with what you have. Some of the images are well done, the composition and meaning is reflected well. I say if you have a regular ol' digital camera take advantage of Photoshop to do things you could've done on SLRs, like blur the background or lighten/darken the image. Overall good luck and have fun with photography!

Great pictures! I agree with the previous postings, be careful not to do the typical centering of the main image. The rule of thirds is very helpful, and you can look it up on google to get more information about it.

It's been a few months since I put anything in this topic. My small camera broke and right now I am looking for a new once, and so far I have been recommended a Kodak EasyShare Z710 7.1MP . Also, I will scroll back up and see what you guys recommended before. I can buy any in the 300/500 dollar range, that is my budget for a camera at the moment in time.

Here are some new pictures, I haven't done many in awhile, but some of these turned out pretty well.

Well, I am back with more photography. Since September I have bought myself a newer Cannon Model Camera, which is really nice. I still need to buy a bunch more lenses to fit what I love taking pictures of.

For now, I'll post a few simple ones that I've taken and messed around with. Enjoy

You have good composition, keep up the good work Which canon did you get? I bought two lenses but they were both quite expensive but I realized I probably should have invested in a flash first.

Canon XTI EOS, it was a good 600/700 dollars, I don't remember which. HUGE improvement over what I had, that's for sure.

I took these pictures today- I had just found out my friend smoked, so I decided instead of saying "hey man, I hope it doesn't become an addiction for you" to "Hey, get your cigs, we're going to a broken down train station for a picture". I didn't really have a 'set' picture in mind that I normally would, I just shot at random, this is what I got

- For that last blurry one, I am saving that place for a picture of myself. I got the idea I wanted to take a GTA inspired picture. I'm so glad that whole place is a broken down mess.

Dude, what I do isn't anything special. All it is, at least for me, is random ideas that you guys and my personal friends seem to like. I'm nothing special when it comes to someone special with a lens. I need to learn a lot more before I actually do some 'Pictures are worth 1000' words.

Here are a few of my friends, so enjoy these random pictures.
