Game Soundtracks done by notable musicians

My friend and I were randomly lurking IMDB looking up musicians we're familiar with, noting the soundtracks they've done and all. He asked what game soundtracks some musicians/bands may have done/contributed to (for original tracks), and I couldn't come up with all that much aside from Incubus and others in Halo 2, and Trent Reznor for Quake. (Also, for example, Trevor Rabin formerly of Yes has done many film scores, including Snakes on a Plane)

I didn't really know where to look, so I figured this part of the forum would be a pretty good resource for such misc knowledge. I'd appreciate any notable musicians who did film as well as games.

Jet'n'Guns, There's a song in the Best Song Contest 2006, it says the artist is Machinae Supremacy. W00t.

Godsmack provided the instrumental version of Stand Alone for Prince of Persia Warrior Within.

Amon Tobin is the musician behind the Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory soundtrack. However, I'm not sure if he's done any film music, so if that's your definition of "notable" then I guess he wouldn't fall into that category ( although his music's been used on the BBC show "Top Gear" time and time again ).

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Well, I'm interested in notable composers in games too, but moreso I'd like to know of musicians in bands for the most part composing in game or film.

David Bowie wrote and sang for The Nomad Soul, an adventure game on Dreamcast and PC by French studio Quantic Dream. He actually played a role in the game too.

N.EX.T did the Korean version of Guilty Gear XX# Reload. I've heard them described as basically the Korean version of the band "Queen". I haven't heard any of their other stuff though, although I hear they've changed around a lot, even since doing their work on #R.

Given the sound of the Guilty Gears, I would find it quite hard to believe any participating bands would emulate Queen in ANY way. Didn't N.EX.T do GGXX? I was under the impression the Korean one was by a different band.

Brian May (Queen guitarist and song writer) did the music for the abysmal "Rise of the Robots".

As it seems in Japan and the prog-rock scene Motoi Sakuraba is still generally better known as keyboard player and composer for Deja-Vu as that band was part of the Japanese prog-rock landscape at its peak of popularity and activity (mid to end 1980s).

In general there are plenty Japanese musicians who did both compose vgm and participate in alternate music band, but they are mostly not as recognisable.

Michael Nyman was responsible for Enemy Zero, a Sega Saturn game.

Also, the name of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Daisuke Asakura, Joe Hisaishi come to my mind.

First thing that comes to my mind is the Russian metal band Aria who made the soundtrack for the truck racing game Rig'n'Roll (Dalnoboyshiki 2).

And David Arkenstone co-composed Lands of Lore 2, not sure if he's a notable musician, though.

Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, EscaFlowne, Wolf's Rain, GitS: SAC, etc.) did the Uncharted Waters series, Nobunaga's Ambition series, and more recently, Napple Tale.

Michael Giacchino (responsible for several TV series soundtracks) composed - among other things - the Medal of Honor: Frontline soundtracks.

And what about Harry Gregson Williams and his Metal Gear Solid soundtracks?

Hm, interesting to see some old prog-rock heroes doing this kind of work. I never played either game, are their soundtracks any good?

It's cool how Giacchino's case is the other way around- his VG work garnered him some recognition from Alias to The Incredibles, and then shot off from there. Hoping he won't forget his roots though, his latest being Black.

Craig Safan (Hollywood film composer) did most of the Leisure Suit Larry 5 score.

William Goldstein (Broadway, general arts stuff in LA, USA) did the King's Quest 4 score.

Thomas Vitacco (a heavy metal guitarist) made the game and the music for Blackstar: Agent of Justice.

Michel Legrand (Hollywood film composer) composed the music for Torin's Passage, however, the final versions were altered and arranged by David Henry.

More if I can think of any.

Masahiro Andoh was known as the leader of the T-square band, which I suppose that was a reference in Japan back in the 80s. He has become famous lately for his compositions on the Gran Turismo and Arc the lad sagas.

Minoru Mukaiya was also the pianist of the Casiopea band, in the same style as T-square (jazz-rock fusion). He has composed for some of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Densa de go! (or something like that). He now runs a little game company and he composes the music for its games.

I encourage you to visit youtube to watch both bands' videos, there are tons of them, and they are so, so good!

Harry Gregson-Williams is more recently credited with Stephen Barton for the soundtrack to Call of Duty 4.

The soundtrack to Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War features the song "Blurry" by Puddle of Mudd. I don't think the song was specifically made for the game, simply featured, but I could be wrong on that.

Can't believe no one mentioned Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks; Blue Velvet; Mulholland Drive), who collaborated with Normand Corbeil for the Fahrenheit OST.

Also, Peter Gabriel (remember when he was with Genesis?) teamed up with Jack Wall to create the moving score in Myst IV: Revelation.
