Galactic Civilisation 2

Anyone got the game?
Its quite awesome (so much like Master of Orion 2...).

I love fiddling with new ship designs, the races are interesting and diplomacy is fun !
The Campaign, so far, isn't something to write home about, but who did need a campaign in MoO2 anyways, eh?

The graphics are fine for the game, there is a lot of stuff to do, worlds to conquer and build up.
Oh, the building up is interesting. Unlike MoO2 you actually decide yourself where to place the buildings and try to invent technology to clear out swamps etc to build more.

Oh yeah, and they are currently pissed off at Starforce.
A Starforce ADMINISTRATOR shared a link to a bit-torrent of Galciv2 on their forums O_o (there are theories going around the guy did it BECAUSE GalCiv did not use the starforce protection).

Starforce sucks.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Nice to see some gamecompanies trying to stand up against those Starforce-Nazi's.

Anyway the game is really awesome, one of the best 4x games in a long time. I too like to make my own ship design's and it has quite some depth too. You're not hindered by any maximum part numbers when designing you're ship you can decide for yourself how many pieces you put on it, beware though for the looks it has no max but as for pieces that give your ship some abilitys well those are ofcourse coming at a max.

The only thing i don't like is how the galaxy is represented as a 2d grid, i'd like my galaxy's to look realistic and ofcourse the starsystems represented on a 3d scale/grid.

Another 4x game soon to be released is Sword of the Stars it's from the makers of Homeworld Cataclysm, and it's looking great from the screens it has the basic gameplay of a 4x game with the realtime space battles of Homeworld. The UI is looking great too.

I really hope there will be a demo of the is game out soon, because i've played galciv2 a bit too much for the last couple of weeks.

I really like this game
Many call it a MoO2 beater but I haven't played enough of it yet to see wether this is true or not. So far it looks like the this game was made with care... everything is so deep and detailed. Most of the time it reminds me of MoO2 so often I get the idea that they decided to clone a large part. The game also resembles Imperium Galactica II very much. Well... i'm gonna play some more Highly recommended.

Note: Get the two recently released patches, it fixes alot

Also check this badass ship someone made with the builder:

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I heard some copy protection buzz on this game: the is none. You can install the game to HDD if you like and never us the CD again, the CD-Key isn't even madatory! When I get a PC that meets the system requirements, I'll give this game a try.

I think the same thing happened with Fable to a degree, in that any CD Key works, and Beyond Good and Evil didn't even HAVE a CD Key IIRC, you just needed to have the CD in the tray (Which was quickly taken care of).

Galciv 2 is a 4X joygasm. Definitely check it out.

It's polished, detailed and very addictive, but the game does have its weak points: one-dimensional ground combat and a boring tech tree among others, and I hate the fact that you can see each race's sphere of influence in the entire galaxy from the very first turn. Sure, we can just turn off the display, but the AI certainly isn't going to stop using that information even if we do.

Right now it's also impossible to give commands specific ships in a stack (Upgrade/Sentry/Guard/etc) without using hotkeys or moving them to their own empty sector first. This really needs fixing.

I heard there is absolutely no cd check, which I can't confirm because I bought and downloaded my copy online, and yes, you will only need your cd key to download the updates. You'll want to download the updates though, because the original unpatched version is much flimsier, interface- and gameplay-wise.

Oh, I plan too. 4X, is that the Development Company? or do you mean 4X as in 4 Times the Joygasm (lol) ?

Sorta like Deus Ex 2 huh?

Well If the torrents don't work I'll see if someone would be willing to send it to me via DVD-R later on.

That's 4X as in explore, expand, exploit and exterminate. Wikipedia unsurprisingly has a page on the genre:

Yep. You only need the Serial Number to download the patches. The cool thing is, some people actually downloaded the game and liked it a lot and were encouraged to buy the game simply because of their stance against draconian copy protection such as Starforce. It's nice to see that their stance on invasive copy protection has paid off in some cases. Yay Stardock =)

Also, this is an excellent game.

WOW
Just WOW
I knew you can build any kind of ship you want (even if I did not mess around with it too much yet) but thats just awesome!

Btw: GalCiv2 has sold better than Stardock thought.
It sold far beyond their expectations, which is pretty cool and shows that people want quality and are ready to pay for it.
http://forums.galciv2.com/index.aspx...161&AID=104297
http://forums.galciv2.com/index.aspx...aid=106741&c=1

I also think the idea with the patches and other stuff only for people who bought the game is a great idea.
If the creator puts out great support and free stuff, the games will sell good because people who enjoy the games want to have access to that too.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Penny Arcade gave their two cents about the Starforce thing as well and while I'd take a more radical position in the copy protection issue than Tycho, I think every comment along the lines of "don't fuck with your paying customers" is important these days. Unless of course, we want art and entertainment to choke on all that DRM crap...

The only thing it lacks now is multiplayer. It was left out because they found singleplayer the most important. I guess it's also quite annoying to wait for someone to finish their turn but I don't really care. I just want to kill my friend online

Maybe it's some kind of ritual, you know, like in some areas where you're not considered a man if you don't get drunk on Friday night and push over sleeping cows. At least I'd consider a game industry mobbing its individual developers into getting fancy copy protection to be at about the same intellectual level...

Play it once on the easiest level?
I also learned you should push out ships to colony planets as fast as you can, because that is what the computer will do and if he gets control over more planets than you, he'll be able to produce faster, to research faster, etc

Got the game about a week ago or so, and its been interesting. The interface was confusing at first, but I'm getting the hang of things. I wanna now see if anyone made Star Trek/Star Wars etc., style galaxies

How many attack ships would be good to stop a pirate fleet?

<3 to GalCiv2, man.

My only 4X entries prior to this were MOO 1 and 3, plus Civ 2, so this was a huge improvement over any of that

But seriously, I've never seen a more INVOLVED dev community, and I compare Stardock (The dev, not the copy protection people) to Bethesda thus:

Beth is well known for their great support of customers through free updates and such (At least in Morrowind's days). However, for two weeks after OB's release, they AND their mod squad kept a blackout enforced on the forums, with no comments about bugs, suggestions to displeased users, notice that they realized what things were wrong with the game. In fact, the only thing they DID do was, when they realized that several video cards listed as being within the minimum specs could, not, in fact, run the game satisfactorily, they changed the Minspecs page without notice.

Sure, since then, they've given us overpriced armor.

But how about Stardock? Well, they have spent the entire time on the forums as they code. Seriously, I've known [company president] Brad Wardell to be awake at 2AM EST (They are stationed in Michigan, so I guess that was 1AM for him?) on the IRC channel for the game, literally implenenting AI suggestions into his code as we mention them.

They actively engage the community to create new mods and material for the game, and have a 750-reply thread about improvements we'd like to see, which they read daily and make comments on. The most impressive thing I've seen thus far is their work on the 1.1 patch (1.0X fixed nearly every bug that had been mentioned, even ones that affected tiny numbers of users). With this patch, they are adding in, and I do not kid you, PAGES of requested features. The ship designer is getting better, the AI is getting better, the graphics are going to improve. EVERYTHING

I have never seen a company be so involved with and so caring toward its customer base.

I was speaking idiomatically.
So. . . err. . . how bout them Mets?!
