Network Not working
So, my mom has been using NETGEAR for her wireless router and lately, even though the cable modem is on and working and the wireless network is showing up, my mom's computer won't connect to it. When she tries to reinstall the software for netgear, it says there's some sort of internal error and won't save the profile. I know it's not the computer, because it'll connect to other networks, just not the netgear one. I've also gone to my mom's house with my laptop and it won't connect to netgear either. I honestly think it's just the modem not working because the lights that blink on my modem at home aren't blinking on her's, but she says it's always been like that and worked so I guess it's something wrong with the wireless router itself? Basically I've used what limited computer knowledge I have to try and fix it, but it clearly hasn't helped. Any suggestions?
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
When you say she can't connect, do you mean she can't connect to the wireless network? Or just the internet?
Also, on the modem, are there any lights on at all? And if so which ones? Same goes for the wireless router. And what can you tell me about what the software does? Ordinarily, you wouldn't need to install some special software to connect to a simple router. Also, figure out what the model number for the modem and router are. There's nowhere I can't reach. |

You don't need to use Netgear's software to connect to a wireless network running with a Netgear router.
Windows can do it nicely just look under the control panel goto network connections and look for your wireless adapter there right click it and select properties, Click wireless networks tab Check to box 'allow windows to configure my wireless network settings'. Click OK Right click on the wireless adapter again and this time select 'view avalaible Wireless Networks' (Click refresh network list on your left if it doesn't appear) Select the network and enter your password. But as packrat says its nice to know the model. Also make sure the router itself has a wireless network enabled in its settings. Try phoning Netgear support they walked me through all this in about 10 minutes when I bought my router. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Thanks for your guy's help but I got it fixed. It was just the router that wasn't working, not my mom's computer or anything.
