How much did it cost your parents to raise you?

I'm astonished that I'm worth 150000 dollars to my parents. I just calculated how much money they needed to raise me till 20 years old. You can buy a house with that.

Here goes:

Food & drink: 7 euro/day -> 47040 euro/20 years
Fuels: 3 euro/day -> 20160 euro/20 years
Clothing:
-baby pamper: 50 euro/month -> 1800 euro/3 years
-regular clothing: 240 euro/year -> 4800 euro/20 years
-bed: 50 euro
-uniform: 40 euro
Electricity: 30 euro/month -> 7200 euro/20 years
Water: 5 euro/month -> 1200 euro/20 years
Babysit: 25 euro/day (way too much) -> 36000 euro/6 years
Holiday: 500 euro/year -> 10000 euro/20 years
Piano: 30 euro/week -> 14400 euro/10 years
Education things: 100 euro/year -> 1500 euro/15 years
Piano: 2500 euro
laptop: 1000 euro
University: 400 euro/year -> 2000 euro/5years
Housing at the university: 18000 euro/5 years
Car: 15000 euro
Toys: 100 euro/Year -> 2000 euro/20 years
Dental plan: 3000 euros
Glasses: 1400 euros
Lessons in private: 480 euros

Total - Child money = 165570 euros
Minus taxes = 150000 euros

I'm seriously thinking, wow!
How about you people?

Seems like food, car fuel, babysit and piano lessons are the most expensive.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Man, that'd be great if it were in US dollars. Otherwise I see some items and numbers that mean nothing to me.

Regardless, I still suspect my parents still OWE me money over the years. Yes, there have been times I've had to lend them money, and times I've borrowed from them, I've paid them back, and they said I didn't.

When you get that list to me in US dollars, first thing I'm gonna do is cut it down and see where I can save money. (I'm eyeing piano lessons and laptop now.)

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Euro and dollar. It's almost the same. Just add some dollars to those numbers and you've got it. But indeed, the living standards of each country is different. Like, I suspect university costs much more in America.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

College is absurdly overpriced. My sister, for example, is going to a $36,000 a year school, which will cost my dad $144,000 over the course of 4 years. Add my college expenses of about $21,000 a year, and you have $226,000 over a 6 year span, JUST FOR COLLEGE!

36000 dollar a year!!! Crazy!

But America is crazy, I hear that nurses in America get paid more than engineers here in Belgium...

Probably way too much because they insisted on running themselves into bankruptcy by sending me to a horrendously expensive private school.

A whole damn lot, probably more then they should have. They spent shit loads on me trying to find something that would nuture me. My brothers found music almost right away, I went through so many after school activities before I settled into acting. Not to mention eating a whole lot and being a total spend-thrift.

Euro and dollar. It's almost the same.
150,000.00 EUR = 219,828.77 USD. Just almost the same. This is just to correct any misinformation. The currencies were quite "equal" when euro started its run, but nowadays, not.

I don't even want to think about how much money my parents have put into me, since it doesn't really matter at all. I'm not interested, they're not that interested.

A lot. I wont even go into estimations. College alone is costing them around $90,000. That's just me... not including my two sisters.

And I totally feel that I owe them for it. When times are like they are now, I'm more than willing to help them out. I dont have a huge conglomerate job yet, but I've always worked hard, and was absolutely appalled to find out that at times, I've had more in my savings account than my parents have.

This is where me and my older sister differ... my mom asks for $20 to fill her gas tank, I give it more than willingly. If my mom asks my older sister to buy something for her and my older sister spends $1 more than what mom gave her, she'll demand the $1 back. And this girl just got her LPN. I work as a waitress.

All in all, I feel I owe my parents a lot.

Well I saw this poll and just clicked >$200,000 because I figure that with $50,000 for 5 years of highschool because the biggest single expense I'd easily go over 200,000.

And just then on the radio. The 11am newsbreak on Triple J, they said howa new study has found that the cost of raising two children to the age of 21 has cost Australian families, on average, HALF A MILLION DOLLARS (AUS). And that's two kids which factors in hand me downs, sharing clothes and family discounts.

So whot he fuck answered $<50,000?

The value of the dollar was smaller then. Just by how much per a year I have no idea. But I do remember paying like 35 cents for candy from the store or ice cream from the ice cream man.

And I should say I was dirt poor til I was five, my mother had nothing but my grandma took us in at that point. Barely had any clothes til I was tween and gotten a wardrobe (from donations, handmedowns from cousins and goodwill/salvation army) that I barely grew out of for another 10 years. I didn't get any lessons or whatever, I didn't get sick enough to warrant a serious visit to the hospital or anything like that. I should say that my grandma knew how to make clothes and she made some for myself and my brother. Fabric and thread is pretty cheap especially when you're recycling the old clothing fabric.

I rode the school bus and barely ate much... I'd say it'd be just about 50k or so if you factor in lunch money (2 dollars a day for those 4 years at high school, my brother and I actually skipped lunches to get this "allowance" money to spend on what we wanted via games), rarely bought clothes, groceries, car insurance for 2 years and extras such as movies or my going out which was quite rare. She (my grandma) rarely ordered out or bought fast food actually. She rather cooked with a bunch of ingredients and etc with canned goods too.

The MOST expensive thing she bought me was my car after graduating high school which was about 5k and prior to that was my wisdom tooth extraction at 600. So there's NO way she spent over 100k on me. And this was a good... 10 years ago. After high school, I had social security for a while and a job to support myself and eventually most of all, I moved out within that span of 10 years.

Doing monetary conversions is a "bad thing." Purchase Power Parity must be used. Katchum's value is actually pretty accurate.

My education is probably the most expensive thing. I'm not a picky eater nor worry too much about clothing. I'd say around $100,000. However, the average amount seems to be around $240k.

Not always. My brother is paying 7,000 a year and is still shitty in comparison to me with respect to our abilities as mathematicians (both math). I am 2 years younger and am only is paying $400 a year. It depends on what you put into it. I work hard, he's lazy as hell.

I'm not going to count everything since that'd be too hard to figure out. I'll include things that they didn't need to provide every day (like food and bills for living at home)

1st Grade to 8th Grade: Average of $8,000/year
High School: Average of $14,000/year
Car: $60,000
College: $42,000/year
Allowance: $7,200/year ($150/week)
Apartment: $9,600 for 2 years

For the stuff above, it cost them about $417,600 dollars (USD)

I have no idea how much everything else cost

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'm still surprised at how many people are having their college costs paid for by their parents. My siblings and I all have to pay our own, the same for the majority of my friends. (Going to a U.S. university.) We'll be paying it off for the next decade.

Well, I lived with them for about 17 years, so..
Food: 365 * 12.00 * 17 = $74,460
Electricity (used this as an estimate, not going to bother with rising power costs since we've likely used more all along) : 86.33*12*17 = $17,611.32
Clothing: we bought used or I got my friend's castoffs, so probably around $75 a year = $1275
Birthday and Christmas gifts: they tried to spend around $50 a kid for either so = $1700

... that puts it up to about $95,046, not counting dental costs (medical would have been covered, I was raised in Canada) or extra things we did on vacation, or books for school.

So yeah, about the cost of a cheap house. Kids are pricey.

My parents hardly ever bought me anything, and I'm paying for college myself through loans. Almost anything my mother got for me as a youth was through money from the VA on behalf of my father not paying child support. Medical expenses through insurance, etc. So whatever the house and related expenses cost, food and such, that's pretty much it.

I was speaking idiomatically.
