Winamp's trying pretty hard to convince me not to use it...

I've tried Winamp several times in the last few years, but always end up going back to WMP. I'm trying to switch to Winamp permanently now, but there are a few issues that maybe someone can help with:

1. Every time I close the player an error pops up: The instruction at "0x534534534" referenced memory at "0xelkjrhshr342". The memory could not be "read." Why the hell is this happening?

2. What happened to different filetypes? Any file that's associated with Winamp is now a "Winamp media file." Explorer status bar, file properties, tooltip rollovers all say this... now how do I determine whether a file is an .avi, .mp3, .mid, .mpg, .mp4, .wav, etc? Oh and I don't want to disable hide file extensions for known file types just for this.

Also, the player isn't playing video for .mp4s. Does Winamp need a special codec that WMP is hoarding or something?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

foobar, bud, foobar.

I also recommend the GOM Player for videos...better and more practical than even Media Player Classic, I'd say.

I'm not sure if this'll help #2 but give it a try. Go to Options (right clicking winamp) - Preferences, and File Types. Maybe disabling Winamp Agent? Or modify some of the settings. Sorry if this isn't really any help. >.>

And for the first problem, perhaps a malfunctioning plugin is interfering? You can disable them via the Options.

And have you tried the obvious - reinstalling it.

gl.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I concur that you try foobar2000.

If not, WMP11 is arguably better than Winamp 5 for a number of reasons >_>

I only want one player for all media files. Foobar doesn't play video, does it?

Maybe disabling Winamp Agent
I already had it disabled. Why does it mess with the type of file in the first place? I mean that's extremely inconvenient.

I reinstalled, yeah, still getting that error.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Use foobar for audio, VLC for video. Winamp can only handle a few video formats anyway; VLC can handle pretty much all of them.

How ya doing, buddy?

I'd really rather use Winamp. I fixed the closing error. I just want to know why it eliminates file types and if it's possible to get Explorer to tell me which are which.

Is there virtually no way to determine which of these files are midis, wavs and mp3s? Winamp (and therefore Windows Explorer) now considers them all of the same type of file!

Edit:
Since they're all considered the same file type, I can't even go into Explorer > Folder Options > File Types > Advanced and manually change it; if I were to specify the .mid extension is a MID file type instead of Winamp Media File, that would change .mp3 and .wav extensions to MID file types too.
Is this something only I am frustrated with? Why does this behavior even exist?

Try Detailed view in Explorer but from what you've said, it would probably still read "Winamp media file". You can also try change icons for each file type individually to distinguish them. Winamp is using a universal description for all extensions it's associated with. It seems to be inherent in the program by your descriptions, but I can't be certain of that. Check Winamp's settings to see if there's something there. The behavior exists because the new Winamp is rubbish.

As for the .mp4 file, it is merely a container and does not openly state the video's encoder. Winamp is a poor video player, but it does support DirectShow and a filter pack like CCCP should work with it. If you use CCCP you're better off with MPC anyways.

Another vote for foobar2000, since you've just switched to Winamp it shouldn't be a hassle to change again. With the proliferation of PanelsUI and ColumnsUI configurations, it's relatively painless to customise the player.

Yes.

Yeah I looked at this and was pretty baffled, to be honest. I don't know what those are, and couldn't find anything referring to them in any of the player's preferences. Is there a tutorial somewhere that shows how to customize the thing? It looks all code-based.

This thread on HydrogenAudio has some shared configurations, as well as the components required and instructions to setting them up. They all tend to use the same components (PanelsUI or ColumnsUI) so it's easy to learn. Also check DeviantArt and Customize.org for more foobar2000 configs.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Who the hell uses Windows with file extensions turned off (other than a noob)? That's what I want to know.

Hehe, I for one don't have file extensions displayed as it's less clutter. File type in detailed view and icons are usually enough to determine the extension and there are only so many extensions you regularly come across.

I don't use extensions on my HTPC (aka PC on my HDTV), cause it looks bad and makes icon views on some windows VERY crappy looking.

On my Mac and other "work" PC's, extensions is enabled every time.

I don't see how it's better or more practical than MPC considering MPC takes whatever you throw at it and plays it how it's supposed to look. Not that GOM Player is bad but for an anime faggot like myself this...

is not tolerable. It's the same reason why I can't recommend VLC. If you don't have complete subtitle support like MPC then you just aren't trying hard enough. This is basically why I'll never ever get a mac too.

That's how it's supposed to look. Thanks Media Player Classic. You actually do your job. =)
