Arrow Unreal Tournament III

Seriously?! Where's the love for UT3 here?

Unreal Tournament 3

Another big fps title for the holiday season coming up.

I just preordered the collector's edition today and PSU:AotI while I was at it lol.

Quote:
Unreal Tournament III (UT3) is a first-person shooter video game and the next installment of the Unreal series after Unreal Tournament 2004. It is being developed by Epic Games, to be published by Midway Games towards the end of 2007 for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3, and during 2008 for the Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 version may be delayed until early 2008. [2]

Unreal Tournament 3 is actually the fourth game in the Unreal Tournament series, but has been numbered in terms of the engine it runs on. The original Unreal Tournament uses the original Unreal Engine, while UT2003 and UT2004 use the Unreal Engine 2; therefore they are considered as the same generation. UT3 is subsequently part of the third generation, due to the fact that it runs on the Unreal Engine 3.
One thing I must note about the gameplay is that it feels more like the original UT than UT2k3 and 2k4 because of the loss of dodge jump.

Oh and demo is coming soon... 1-2 weeks I would assume.

How ya doing, buddy?

There's been a very small parade of fans going around the boards who are fans of the series. But yeah, good to see that the game's now got it's own thread. I myself can't wait for this baby.

Here's some screens.

My lack of awesome computing power makes me cry. I might be able to play this on my desktop, but it will suck and I will be sad but I refuse to spend billions of dollars rebuilding my computer again simply to play one game.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Then buy a PS3 instead. It's about the same price as a high end video card and a couple gigs of RAM anyway. That's why I didn't really care if my PC sucked when this came out.

I am really looking forward to a return of the old school UT style in UT3 I'm also hoping that fewer game types will mean that the ones they have will have more of the playerbase evened out across them unlike UT2k4 (poor Bombing Run ).

The single player mode in this one sounds fantastic too! An evolving storyline is what I've always wanted to see in the UT series, and now it looks like it's come true!

I was speaking idiomatically.

Thank you Guest for the kickass signature!

Been waiting for this game for eons. Will buy it on my 360 and more fragfests to follow.

Also hoping for a good soundtrack, similar to '99.

I don't know how well this will play on console. I remember the unreal game for the x-box, and I thought the controls were awkward, or it could be just me. But I think I may upgrade my computer for this game, and Starcraft II(hope it comes out within 2 years, lol).

But the real reason I would upgrade my pc is to be able to play with a large number of people. Isn't the console versions limited to 12 or 14 players max? Love instangib CTF =)

Why not? It works on Halo 3 (among other games). It all depends on the user's "expertise". Also the argument "Oh, FPS games are only supposed to be played on the PC" is very much overused. I also had the mindset until I tried it out. Soon got the hang of it.

Anyway, checking out Slayer's link and see if the music is really worth it.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Nah, I'm not going to use that argument. Halo 3, Gears of War, and BioShock made good use of the controller.

You're right. I have problems adapting. It's probably since I've played every UT game on PC, and I'm expecting the same output, from the controller on the consoles (x-box version, when I played)

And didn't EPIC plan to let console players play against pc users? I know they canned this idea for the ps3, but what's the plan for the 360 version?. If it does happen, wouldn't the pc users have a better advantage..because of the higher/precise aiming from the mouse(people with the 5000 DPI mouse..)..if this happens..I think this would be another reason for me, not to try console version online.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Oh so they're bringing back the feel of the original UT.

I've been trying to imagine the 'feel' of UT99 transplanted onto those ultra detailed screenshots, but it's just not working for me. An integral part of that 'feel' which makes me nostalgic for the original game is that irreplacable aesthetic sense of rather rudimentary and bland metallic environments. It was comforting. Those screenshots on the other hand leave me cold. The mass amounts of realistic detail just look like distractions. I wonder how something like Facing Worlds would be treated in this new engine. There was a simplistic beauty about the classic.

I understand the need for progress and all that. But...well I guess this is just me saying that UT99 can never be supplanted. But the music had already made sure of that anyway. We'll never get that simple Tracker goodness now. Those days are gone. What have they done with the old tracks? Just stuffed them with extra BOMBAST.

The console versions are compatible with usb mouse and keyboard so it's the same thing.

Though the environments and excessive visual detail may not reflect UT99 anymore, I think what they really meant was that they are trying to recreate the classic gameplay feeling. UT2003/2004 always felt more like Quake 3 to me, only slightly different. And in terms of music, I hope it comforts you that Alexander Brandon is back on the team to create awesome music like he did for UT99 and Deus Ex, so that means no more super-bass-uninspired-filler-crap-music-tracks for sure though I wonder if he'll be able to beat his own old-school tracker goodness.

Hey I thought Kevin Riepl did a wonderful job on the music for UT2k3/4 and I also really liked the dodge jump that was in 2k3/4 which also brings the point that I am sorta disappointed that its going away in UT3.

I don't mind the dodge jum being gone. It seemed like only a few people used it a lot. Even the best players online, though they could use the dodge jump well, it didn't serve much purpose in the open maps of onslaught and what have you. So while it may suck not having it that odd time in DM mode, seeing how the Onslayght and Warfare will probably be the most played gametypes I'm sure we won't miss it very often.

Demo details:
Still no official release date said by Epic or BeyondUnreal

First of all, the demo will not feature a Warfare map. Having played a few of them, I can say that there's a very good reason why: while they all share similar core gameplay, all the maps we played and discussed seem to have a different twist to them. Just sampling one wouldn't give you a very good perspective of what they are like. Torlan_Necris, for instance, is somewhat similar to standard Onslaught, with the addition of the orb. Another we played had one side with a heavily defended base, while the other team had a number of hard-hitting vehicles with which to attack. Still others feature triggerable events to aid in comebacks such as landslides and floods. It's a very versatile gametype and it seems to be much deeper than Onslaught.

DM-HeatRay is planned to be in the demo. It is the destroyed urban environment that features a lone DarkWalker which is dropped in at specified times during the match. The level strongly conveys a UT-like city setting (complete with the occasional train running on an overhead track) is pretty stunning.

VCTF-Suspense is the second demo map. Set on an immense suspension bridge, this level is set up with Axon vs Axon vehicles and the action takes place in three planes: on platforms high above the bridge, as well as on and under the bridge. It has a nice mix of open sniping areas and tight corridors. There's a little water there too if you care to take a dip.

The final demo map may be DM-ShangriLa. This one has been seen in some of the videos before. It features buildings with Asian-themed architecture and the action takes place around a courtyard.

There's lots more to talk about so stay tuned while we all make the return trip.

actually I used practically in EVERY game mode I played in UT2k4 even onslaught. It was the best method to use to travel if there was no vehicles around.

And online people only using dodge jump? I guess so since that's where only the hardcore players and those who went down the learning curve to utilize it.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Well give it some time and maybe they will reveal some more musicians like Dan Gardopée and Andrew Sega; it's pretty vague at the moment though Brandon is confirmed thanks to an interview. I bet they asked v.d. Bos as well but he's having success with Overlord right now and maybe they we're unable to contract him. Hopefully they managed to get him to work on the game in some way or another, I really like his music.
