Low volume in mic. Network problem?

I'm using the original 360 headset with my Xbox, and friends are complaining they barely hear me. I have the headset volume turned up to max and I can hear them perfectly fine.

My 360 is connected to them internets through a router, which I haven't opened any 360 ports in. Could this be the problem? I haven't had any trouble playing online of any sort.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
