Storms
I'm sitting here at my desk at the office as dark clouds pass by overhead and thunder grows steadily closer. According to Forecastfox, there's a huge-ass wall of storms headed my way.
Personally, I've always been a storm fanatic. I'd be a storm-chaser if there were steady enough money in it. I've always loved thunder, lightning, high winds, tornadoes, the works; to the point that I always said that if I died being hoovered up by a tornado, I would die a happy, albeit dizzy, man. How about my fellow GFFers? Are you the storm-crazy types who'll run outside with a video camera and suck up every last second of footage you can, or do you prefer to hide in the closet until it's over? Also, particularly memorable storm experiences. My most recent would be coming back from a class in the city. All was clear on my way to the train station to head to the south side, but coming back from the station after class and driving back to my house, it looked like an H-bomb went off. Branches down, traffic lights out, everything in a general state of disarray. I asked what happened when I got home and found out that while it missed our town, apparently a tornado had come through the area. Somewhat unusual for the N. suburbs of Chicago. Jam it back in, in the dark. It is not my custom to go where I am not invited. |
I absolutely hate storms, and would try to do a lot of things to get my mind off them when I was younger. Fortunately, the only storms I've experienced are thunderstorms, rainsqualls, and snowstorms.
Actually, I like snowstorms because I associate them with cuddling up and getting warm while the weather rages outside with the aftermath looking nice. Thunderstorms are destructive and rainsqualls make me envision floods. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Storms are terrific as long as you don't need to go anywhere, are inside, and the juice stays on. Great for setting the mood for writing.
Of course, if any of those things happens, it becomes a pain in the ass real fast. Right now, power is out to some grids in the area, and it knocked out some traffic lights. People naturally assume that no light means that they don't have to stop in either direction, and they honk at the few people who do the right thing (treat the intersection like it has a stop sign). My storm memory is thus: when I was living in Botswana, a huge storm whipped up out of nowhere, probably the storm of the century considering that it;s a desert country. Intense wind, huge peals of thunder, and so much hail that it looked like it had snowed recently. I was able to make a hailball from just what was on our front porch. My school was pretty new, but the builders had gypped the officials by building the surrounding wall with no foundation. So when the wind and hail came, the entire thing toppled over in one piece. For the next few months we had to go to swim lessons with the wall down and passersby looking on (perverts all, I bet, since the school uniform swimwear was very revealing). I've always been a bit afraid of thunderstorms, mainly because for the longest time there was a huge tree out in next door's front yard that I thought would get struck by lightning and fall down everytime it stormed. It was finally cut down by my neighbor about 3 years ago, but I still hate storms. They disturb my sleep! ;_; Tornadoes and hurricanes scare the living shit out of me and whenever there is a watch or warning going on I freak out. Especially for tornadoes. I don't know what sparked my fear of those things. :/ I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I love a good storm. That is of course if I am inside. Just the other day, I got stuck outside in one hell of a thunderstorm. The same stormcell had spawned tornadoes just west of winnipeg early that day, and so it was really windy, rain so thick I couldn't see across the street, and the occasional sheet of hail. I was out in the middle of nowhere with my broken down bike, trying to make it home when this storm hit. At that time, I hated the storm. As cool as it was, it still was crappy.

When it starts to rain, it puts a smile on my face. If it turns to a thunderstorm, I'm grinning. I love "bad" weather; it's refreshing. Maybe it's just inbuilt because I'm British. I'll go out in blizzards and storms but if there's lightning headed my way I'll stay indoors and watch from the window.

I love storms. The rain usually cools things down (hot weather = bad), and all the noises are fun to listen to sometimes. Today was full of downpour and thunder.
Of course, there are times where I'm trying to hear things over the thunderstorm, and that doesn't always happen. And then there are instances where I have to walk somewhere through temporary rivers and streams or I go driving and my windshield looks like I'm in the car wash. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() |
I relish thunderstorms. I live right on Lake Michigan and earlier today it was storming and the lake looked awesome. For me there's something extremely calming about watching and hearing the rain slam down, especially if it's been a scorching hot day, like it was today.
My favorite part about storms though is the anticipation of them. When it's been a blistering day and suddenly the entire southeast sky is black, and the wind is picking up and the temperature starts to drop a little bit ooooooohhhh boooooooy you know it's comin!!! Jam it back in, in the dark. |
My forum name is largely attributed to my love for storms. I enjoy listening to the gurgling of gathering pools of water as torrents and fountains massage green landscapes continually. I am seldom more relaxed and at peace than during a storm.

I love storms. I love bad weather of all kinds, especially thunderstorms. Too bad we never get any here. Three days ago a whole bunch of dark clouds rolled in. The thunder was so loud it shook the windows. The wind blew the branches off of several trees (because they are so dried out from the drought). But in the end, it passed right by without a single drop of rain. This has been a persistent problem here as long as I can remember.
And you know what? It was probably pouring down rain in the next town over. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I don't mind storms. They're fun once in a while. The weather here's been stormy-like the last couple days (like generally cloudy with scattered thunderstorms.. the sidewalks are always partially moist, yet I've never been rained on yet). My mom's kinda worried because there's been several incidents of people getting struck by lightning just today. I know the odds and all, but what can you do... people are getting hit even inside their homes, so yeah: I make it rain.

I definitely like storms. Sitting out on my covered porch while it pours, thunder and lightning... mm, love it. It's not really a 'dream' per se, but one of the things I want to happen most in my life is being curled up tight with my love when a huge thunderstorm hits during the night. Maybe a bit cheesy, but oh well.
I dont think I was always like this... when I was little, Hurricane Bob was hitting the area, and I had this terrifying dream about clouds and tornadoes all wearing my father's hat (his name is Bob), and coming to take him away. Don't know how I recovered from that to like storms as much as I do now. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
I love storms. Hearing the sound of rain tearing calamity and the sound of wind gusting through air just soothes my ears. I like to see thunder flashing and the grey clouds above. Too bad storms rarely happen in my country.
I experienced a strange one when I was 14. I was in school waiting my mom to pick me up, and a storm just began. The wind blew as it was hammer banging the windows, and I can even take a shower because of the heavy rain. The strange part was that fog appeared inside the storm. A thick one, indeed. I wish I could that kind again. The funny part is that although the wind is not that strong (unlike tornados in America), there are always trees falling and blocking off artery roads, creating a troublesome traffic jam. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
I love storms. Basically, I love rain and all forms of it. Very relaxing, and a symbol of lazy days at home. Generally it's cold when it rains, and that's a bonus, given I love cold weather. I used to be afraid of lightning as a kid; my father had a "sounds of nature" CD and it had the sound of lightning on it, and apparently I always used to nag whenever he played it. Nowadays, I love lightning and thunder. (Especially the loud "boom" sounds. Recently, there was one so loud that it made me jump...everybody was talking about it; if you didn't you were ostracized =O)
Storms don't actually affect my ability to go to sleep; if anything, they enhance it. Like I stated before, rain is very relaxing to me, and thunder & lightning aren't troublesome at all. I don't have anything to say about the potentially hazardous and chaotic winds that occur...sure, I'd rather the winds weren't there, but they aren't too annoying. Recently, in and around Sydney, there have been some pretty destructive storms. I feel sorry for all of the people's houses (and lives) that have been virtually destroyed, but there is a(nother) beneficial factor of storms: rainwater! Sydney's damns have had a much needed boost recently. ![]() Storms = <3 Most amazing jew boots |
I love to relax with the sound of the rain, but thunder ruins it for me. I think it's because I was raised around people with varying degrees of astraphobia.

I love thunderstorms...as long as I'm my house. It really sucks to be stuck outside when a storm hits. I don't know why, but I love the sound of thunder and I love watching the lightning from my window. Despite the danger lightning brings, they sure are beautiful and doubly awesome.
On that note, I love how Maxis included thunder and lightning in the Sims 2 Seasons expansion pack. THey used actual thunder sounds, and it so loud that it makes me jump when I hear it, just like thunder in real life. Great stuff. P.S. Hurricanes and tornados are cool to look at, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]()

I love storms. Its even fun some times when the power goes out.
Its nice some times to get away from IRC, the phone, etc, and just listen to the rain in the dark. I've noticed lately (at least in my area) summer storms in florida aren't as strong as they were a few years ago. Maybe its just because I was younger, I thought they were louder/bigger/whatever. ![]() There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
I love all kinds of falling pieces of water. Rain, hail, snow. I don't like ice/sleet though, its just more falling water I liked.
It just always seem to refresh the landscape. Snow to whiten everything and rain to purge everything away and make grass/trees even more greener and with a revitalized look. Hail is just awesome power of ice. I like lightening but not as much as thunder because the booming feel you get. However, I'd be in awe if I saw a flash flood. There was one HERE in '85 that was high as you saw from Katrina in New Orleans. I haven't seen a blizzard or a tornado so I wouldn't know what's that like. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I've never been through anything brutal but I've always enjoyed the sound a good rain outside. It's an especially great way to sleep, under a mountain of blankets all cozy and shit, just listening to some destruction outside. Hot chocolate... Mmm. I miss getting this sort of weather frequently in the States.

Don't mind them if I don't need to go outside. Going to class in the rain sucks because you have to sit in class all wet. The worst is wet feet/socks/shoes/bottom of pants.

This was so timely that I woud've sworn you were a New Yorker (until I checked the profile). We've had two thunderstorms in the last two days. I've been taking every chance to go out to the porch and shoot pool or play my guitar. I love precipitation, mostly because it pushes people together. It's fucking romantic, is what it is.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
^^^Romantic! Ah, now there's a good way to describe a rainstorm.
Its been raining the last few days here in Kansas as well. I walked out into my backyard today to behold a few articifial mini-ponds teeming with life. I saw an earthworm slowly and precariously swimming about under the water, munching on algae. A rather large spider sat by the waters edge, eyeing the worm's movement intently. The worm then disappeared into a slimey patch of cavernous, darkened earth. ...There is almost a fragrance after it rains. The smell of foliage fills my nostrils. (YAWN) Oh yes. This is romance. Storms used to scare the shit out of me when I was little, especially this one time when a tree by my house was struck and it collapsed most terrifically.
Now, I rather enjoy listening to them. If they wake me up during the night, that kind of pisses me off, but a good howling storm outside makes me appreciate even more the fact that I am inside. And I LOVE it when the power goes out because then I can use flashlights and candles (but only if it is out for less than 24 hours. More than that and I start to suffer from computer withdrawal.) What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
Who is John Galt?

Storms used to calm my mind until I slowly gained a fear of being struck by lightening. Took about 10 years, not sure why I became afraid of being struck, but when it's a bad storm, I stay the hell away from all trees and if I'm caught in a clearing, I start hauling ass to some nearby building.
Sad isn't it? Jam it back in, in the dark. |
