Drive In Movie Theatres

Yes. I'm talking about those cool places where you drive your car in, tune your radio to the correct station and watch a movie through the fogged up windows of your 4 wheeled mode of transportation. How many of them actually exist anymore? Have any of you gff'ers been to a drive in theatre? If so, what movie did you watch? Any memorable experiences?

I have been to a drive in movie theatre. There is one remaining one here in Winnipeg. Its really cool. You just tune your radio to the correct station and you can listen to the movie even if its cold. The concessions are really expensive but thats because the theatre has no money. If it weren't for some generous people, it would be closed by now. Not very many people go anymore unless they are playing a really hyped up movie. Also its not operation during 6 months of the year due to winter, so that has an affect on its operation. The one time I went was back a couple years ago now. Saw the movie 40 year old virgin for the first time there. Good movie. At least what I saw while I wasn't facing my girlfriend. Sadly, that was the last real date I had with that girlfriend before she had to move to The Pas and we broke up. But otherwise it was pretty cool. Had lots of friends there that night. Bunch of different vehicles. We had walkie talkies lol. So lots of movie commentary going back and forth.

So lets hear about your drive in experience.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I've been loads of times. There are a couple of them here that are still up and running, too.

OK, here's my story. There used to be an X-rated drive-in theatre in the county where I live (whoever thought that up was a genius, huh?) and my sister and one of my friends and I decided to go one night because we'd never seen an X-rated movie. So we're sitting there watching this HORRENDOUS fisting scene and one of us gets the bright idea to see if we can see into the car beside us. So we're all squinting and rubbernecking to look inside this car beside us when we all realize to our complete horror that IT IS OUR BAND DIRECTOR. He saw us, too. ;_;

Ahaha, Alice. Awesome story ^_^

I go almost every summer, when and where I can. There are very few these days up here in my area - maybe one drive in per 100 square miles. They're usually run down and crappy, but it doesn't stop people from going.

The most recent time I went, I saw Pirates 2 near Sebago Lake in Maine with Chris. It looked like all the Mainers crawled out of the woodwork for the 9pm showing - they had hibachis and footballs, and yes - even the classic "girl and boy making out in the front seat" kind of moments.

People were really inconsiderate though. I think it was a BYOB kind of dealie. Some of the audience would turn on their headlights, which would shine on the screen in the middle of the movie. The sound quality was alright, considering it was broadcasted on a local FM kind of thing.

I love the drive-in, though. It's classic entertainment.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I've never been to one, though I'd like to go sometime. I know of two in existence; one in my area, and one near where my grandparents live. Unfortunately since those areas have snowy winters, they're usually closed for the winter season.

Someday I want to go... just for the experience. Someday.

How much have/do people pay to get into them?

Yeah, I know those places. They are called "Autokino" in German, like "Ostankino", the tower in Moscow, but with a different prefix! It's good for some people since it can be bothersome to have sexual intercourse in a public cinema.

I've seen a good amount of movies at drive in movie theaters, but not for a couple years. The last movie I saw at a drive in was Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl....

They torn down Lebanon's drive in to build a Wal-Mart Superstore...

All the ones around here have closed down... there was one less then 10 minutes from my house, but its now been turned into the 'city green'. If anything happens there, its just small concerts or something now.

I do remember going so much when I was younger. We'd always joke about hiding my little sister in the cooler, or I'd volunteer to hide under the car seat. I dont know why they did this, as they charged by the car, no matter how many people were in it.

I remember my parents seeing a double feature... the second movie was the one we went for (I dont remember what it was), but the first was Bed of Roses or something like that. And it was so HORRIBLE! My sisters and I couldnt sit still. We always wanted to sit on the roof of the car.

The last movie I remember seeing in a drive in was Disney's Hercules and (being a huge myth buff) tearing it apart. I dont think my mom enjoyed the movie at all, because I was... probably about 12 or 13, sitting there shrieking about how Hera wasnt his mom, and how Meg actually killed Hercules, and how Belleraphon was the only one to ride Pegasus, etc.

How ya doing, buddy?

I remember drive-ins when I was a kid, back in the 70's & 80's. I saw the first Star Wars movie there (the first first Star Wars...later the fourth Star Wars) and my sister took me to see Animal House at the Drive-in. That was legen.....wait for it....dary!

I go to the Drive-In whenever I can. It saddens me they're torn down so much and that they're now so rare. There's only one left in the area, but thankfully it's still close by.

Whenever summer rolls around I go there almost every weeked. Sometimes I will even go during the winter, since it's usually somewhat warm here during the winter months.

You cant beat the experience or the price. Being able to hang out with people you know and barbecue or eat out while you wait for the sun to set and the movie to begin. Seeing 4 movies for the price of one. Laying back or sitting out in whatever chair you want. It tramples all over regular theatres in most aspects.

When I go to the Drive-In we pay about 5$ per person. You get to see two movies and if you're willing to stay out later you can simply turn your car around toward the other lot, tune into the other radio station, and catch another two movies for free (since they replay the movies twice). That's 4 movies for 5 bucks.

In comparison to a movie theatre I have to pay 7.75-10.00 per person for one movie, I have to either smuggle in food or buy overpriced snacks, and I'm cramped next to hundreds of other people in a chair.

I can only think of two things a movie theatre has over a Drive-In. A theatre has better sound if your car radio happens to be poor and there's a chance your view of the screen will be blocked at a Drive-In by jackasses in large vehicles, where as in a theatre you generally have a better chance of not having your view blocked.

I guess people must enjoy theatres more though.. Drive-ins are just not lasting as time goes by. It's so sad. :/

There's nowhere I can't reach.

The last one I went to was several years ago and it was a double-feature. Speed 2 and McHale's Navy. We walked out during the latter (although I'm surprised we made it through the former). Terrible, terrible movies.

I didn't think they were around anymore, but apparently they still are. I've only seen them in old movies and books, but I live in a remote area of Canada, where there's no such thing. However, if I did go, the only guy with the semi-truck would park right in front of me.

I think the most annoying part of the drivein theatre was the people behind the car me n my girlfriend were in. They kept turning on their headlights, which gave us no privacy. And my girlfriend was touchy about privacy.

I've never been to a drive in theater. I've always liked the idea of sitting in the car watching a movie. I want to go to one.

The only time that I have ever been in a drive in theatre is when I was in Nor-Cal... It was really interesting to say the least..

A theatre that smells better then most of the reg. theatres

scary drive in movies

The ultimate drive in movies are the scary ones or chick flicks. There is no easy way to enjoy your girlfriend's presence in a regular movie theatre. It's just not easy to cuddle with the big arm rests between the two of you. But with a huge front seat, you can certainly get close. I love it! The scary ones really get them to cuddle!

In my experience scary movies in these places suck ass because it's usually night time and it's hard to make shit out. Had a horrendous time watching The Crow this way.

Other than the above mentioned I've only gone once. It was the very first time I saw a movie at a place that wasn't home and the movie was Land Before Time.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
