the IRS is after your EPICs!
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6162654...=lastword;link
http://news.com.com/2100-1043_3-6140...-0-5&subj=news Basically anything valuable you earn in virtual worlds such as phat epix in WoW may be taxable in the future. What do you think? Just another reason to practice tax evasion? or is it the product of jealous non-raiders wanting to see raiders get screwed over? edit: just some thoughts, seeing as how Blizzard's Terms of Use effectively says everything belongs to Blizzard and that the only thing you are paying for is the right to use and play their game, wouldn't the taxes apply to blizzard only? This is of course assuming I've intepreted the ToS correctly and that Blizzard doesn't pass the taxes onto the rest of us, even so how will they distribute the taxes? only to raiders or those who have epics? or evenly across all players? Jam it back in, in the dark.

Um, I don't understand how they can do this. I mean, it's not real money.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
![]() Where there's a bill, there's a way! The IRS motto ;_; This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
Hey, maybe you should try that thing Chie was talking about.

I didn't read these particular articles, but this has more to do with Second Life than anything else. It wouldn't apply to WoW since selling things offline is against their ToS. Second Life, on the other hand, has turned into quite a lucrative industry, especially when you consider that it is completely taxless.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Damn u IRS!!! those greedy bastards!
I was speaking idiomatically. |
....Why did you bump a topic that hasn't been touched in nearly three months?
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
Why did you bump a topic that was bumped that hadn't been touched in 3 months?
![]() Also, I don't have epics anymore so I think I'm safe. "I'm in here for grand larceny" "I'm in cause I KEEL PEEPLES" "I'm in the joint cause I didn't pay my EPIX TAX" "Wow, youse wants a smoke?" FELIPE NO |
Lolz, government is teh n00bz and will get h4xx0rD!
Seriously though: if they start taxing "virtual" assets, then these assets would fall under regular U.S. law. What does this mean? It means that if someone stole your "epic" that was taxed under a new U.S. law, the feds would have to assign an FBI agent to your case to try to get the epic back. Then, what about eminent domain? One private entity could simply take over your land/buildings in Second Life by claiming eminent domain. If the government sticks their head into this sort of thing they are going to end up getting pWned. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
