When Fake fur feels real...it probably is...

Apparently some coats bought at high end stores contain canine-related fur .

Some Coats May Have Fur From Dogs

WASHINGTON (AP) - That fur trim on your jacket that you think is fake? Tell it to Fido. An animal advocacy group says its investigation has turned up coats - some with designer labels, some at higher-end retailers - with fur from man's best friend. Some retailers were set scrambling to pull the coats from shelves, take them off Web sites and even offer refunds to consumers.

The Humane Society of the United States said it purchased coats from reputable outlets, such as upscale Nordstrom, with designer labels - Andrew Marc, Tommy Hilfiger, for example - and found them trimmed with fur from domestic dogs, even though the fur was advertised as fake.

"It's an industrywide deception," said Kristin Leppert, the head of the Human Society's anti-fur campaign.

The investigation began after the society got a tip from a consumer who bought a coat with trim labeled as faux fur that felt real. Leppert and her team began buying coats from popular retailers and then had the coats tested by mass spectrometry, which measures the mass and sequence of proteins, to determine what species of animal the fur came from.

Of the 25 coats tested, 24 were mislabeled or misadvertised.

Three coats - from Tommy Hilfiger's Web site ShopTommy.com, Nordstrom.com and a coat from Andrew Marc's MARC New York line sold on Bluefly.com - contained fur from domesticated dogs. The others had fur from raccoon dogs - a canine species native to Asia - or, in one case, wolves. The single correctly labeled coat was trimmed with coyote fur, but it was advertised as fake.

Most of the fur came from China.

A friend of mine had a racoon dog that got cataracts and fell off a cliff.

Though it did have luxurious fur.....

So they tested 25 coats? I'm no scientist, but this hardly seems a large enough sampling. Also, the Human Society (who obviously has an agenda) did the "survey." Do you think it's possible that they chose coats they could already tell by the texture were dog fur? Maybe?

Isn't the point, though, that it's happening at all? =o I mean, off the cuff it seems like you'd have to have really shoddy quality to control to "accidentally" use real fur instead of fake fur in the manufacturing.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Maybe it's just too early in the morning for me to get it, but why are these shops advertising fake fur when it's real? Just because it comes from dogs?

I mean hell, if they're gonna use real fur, might as well use it from animals that not only aren't endangered, but domesticated and repopulated regularly.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Probably because they know that if they want their stuff to sell it has to be marketed as fake.

Loophole:

"fake fur" refers to there being no mink or ermine. So, yes, these were fake furs.

I always thought the coats with the fur lining looked dead wrong and horrible. Many a time I've actually said "that looks like road kill" basically because it looks nasty and horrible.
It makes me sad to think people like wearing fur and that people do pay money for it and I always thought that fake fur was a good idea. But why would some one use the fur from a domesticated dog to put on a coat? It's sick.

Wonder if people who've bought the coats have still kept them or took them back because of false advertising?

I think its just another example of the corporations being able to get away with false advertising and trying to cheat the system. I happens often, and it seems that these things turn up whenever there is an investigation. The Fifth Estate and Marketplace on CBC finds all sorts of things companies try to get away with. An example is the canned Tuna with levels of mercury over Health Canada guidelines....

A sample size of 25 is indeed small, but I don't think thats the point. Ultimately it still shows that there is false advertisement when it comes to these furs.

Considering someone can make a rather nice sum of money out of doing something like this to animals, their conscience doesn't even come into the picture. I don't approve of it whatsoever but others seem to think profit > life.

There's a whole bunch of clothes out there that feel "soft and cuddly" without needing to KILL A FUCKING ANIMAL IN THE PROCESS just to get the same satisfaction.
