By popular demand (popular meaning orion), here's a two-looped version of Gentle Breeze and the Earth.

Also, to copy the Sims eligibility discussion from SC:

Thoughts?

EDIT: Nevermind. After searching, it looks like there wasn't the agreement that I thought there was.

From memory, at least three Sims tracks have been in GFF contests. One of the Pop Station tracks from TS2 took gold in SotW, Create-A-Sim from TS2 took 5th place, and Building Mode 3 from TS did OK in BSC 05, I believe.

Btw, they both apparently have official soundtracks, not just the game rips that everyone seems to have. :-o

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Gonna get this in while we still have server time. A modest week, but I expected as much after last week's blockbuster grouping.

Atelier Iris ETERNAL MANA 2 Original Soundtrack - Gentle Breeze and the Earth: Light and fluffy, the sort of thing I tend to enjoy. Part of me felt that this track was a little too fluffy, though. It all comes together nicely, but it seemed to lack some of the underlying depth that makes other lighthearted tracks feel fully developed.

Boomshine (Game Rip) - Excremental Intermission (Boomshine Mix): My immediate reaction to this track was a comparison to "The Sims 2: Building Mode 3", as both feature a gorgeous, organic piano. "Excremental Intermission" has a nice percussion line, which the Sims track lacks, however. Two thumbs down to the cliffhanger ending; it kills all sense of musical denouement. I still expect this track to place, though.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Soundtrack - Pharotek: Meh. Another entry in an unending series of moody, brooding tracks that seek to stimulate through ambient oppression instead of melodic escapade. Just not my style, although it's not even close to the worst example of the genre that I've ever heard. I could tolerate hearing this again.

Fortune Quest Roll the Dice - Dash de GO!!: Props to the goofiest beginning of any SotW nomination ever. The rest is a wacky, Merry Melodies inspired piece that sounds more like something from an unreleased Sam & Max game. But it's the kind of zany fun that appeals to my years of cartooning experience. Expect some points here.

Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~: I've had this album for a while now and "Emotional Theme" is a fine track, indeed. It's a "grower" whose charm improves over successive listenings. I've always enjoyed the subtle distortion guitars and synths used in the lower layers, something that I feel brings this piece up to a modernized feel while still maintaining a classic, "Celtic" overtone. I hope for this track to do well this week.

Ragnarok Online 2 The Gate of the World (Game Rip) - Intro Theme: A recent string of decent vocal tracks in SotW has diminished my criticisms, but I'm just not feeling this track. The instrumentals are sparse, forcing the listener to focus directly upon the voices, which aren't that spectacular here. I do appreciate the soft, New Age feel this track presents, though, so credit is due there.

Trigger Heart EXELICA OriginalSoundtrack - SOUND ANCHOR - STAGE 1 ~Exelica, Dancing at Dawn~: This is an acceptably synthy track, upbeat and melodic, with some solid variety throughout. In past weeks, this would've earned points, but I feel as though this track is just one shade above being an average "stock" track and is overshadowed by stronger nominations this week.

Way of the Samurai 2 Original Sound Track - Souls Bonded and Split: I don't have the same initial bias against tracks that invoke a strong sense of feudal Japan and China, unlike others here. I enjoy a strong sense of exoticism and culture in my music and feudal rhythms are excellent at providing this. "Souls Bonded And Split" is nice background music, and would be excellent for studying or reading under. My only complaint is that it feels too laid back and is therefore lacking in the same verve displayed by other nominations. I still enjoyed this one but it needs a little more ferocity, in my opinion.

Points, Points, Points: 2 Points to Each!!

Boomshine (Game Rip) - Excremental Intermission (Boomshine Mix)
Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~
Fortune Quest Roll the Dice - Dash de GO!!

The rest were all decent, even the C&C track, but I liked these three tracks noticably more than the rest.

Upon Sims and/or SimCity Musics: Sims and Sims 2 is the best selling PC series of all time, meaning that its music is the most heard, even if it's not necessarily the most immediately recognized. That sort of audience in sheer numbers indicates to me that it's hardly obscure at all and past entries notwithstanding, shouldn't be allowed in SotW.

SimCity music is in a similar category (pun intended). Believe me, I absolutely love "Magic City" from SimCity3K, but have never once thought to nominate it here because the SimCity series has certainly attained mass exposure and pop culture notability; and I cannot under any circumstance fathom it being called "obscure".

But I'm okay with being in the minority, if that's how it works out.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

I'm taking a wait and see approach to GFF's uptime, which means no posting of votes here. I wouldn't even say that we needed a voting thread just yet, but apparently the demand is there.

Re: The Sims, if a series' sales popularity is a benchmark for SoTW entry, there's definitely precedent. Recall Drakken's Halo 2 nomination, for instance--while many, many people bought the game, the argument was made (and accepted) that the music was still insufficiently familiar.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Yeah. I have to say the Halo 2 case was a bit different, though - that was a song that all those people who played the game would not have heard, as it was not in the game. It was only on the soundtrack. With The Sims, we're talking about regular background music that plays in the game.

Nomination time. I know one Albert Odyssey song placed third before and did fairly well in the last BSC, so if this has gotten too much exposure, let me know and I'll pick my backup joke nomination.

Artist: Naoki Kodaka
Album: Albert Odyssey Gaiden ~ Legend of Eldean
Track Title: Main Theme 1
Disc number: 1
Track Number: 5
Catalog number: PCCB-00210~1
Year: 1996
Sources: http://www.gamingforce.com/audio/gfa-albums.php?id=958

And as far as music from The Sims goes, I'm not too familiar with it, but I think a lot of people are. I'm kinda iffy about it, but I won't compain with it going either way.

This week's theme: Understatement. Most all of these pieces, if not decidedly scaled back for their entire length, have good chunks of restraint about them. Not a wholly bombastic, shake-the-heavens-and-earth track in the bunch, no catchy baselines or lengthy developing electronica. But nothing crosses the threshold into easy listening slop either. It is a pretty interesting week. All of the darkhorse favorites are wrestling with each other, no attention grabber to steal the spotlight.

Atelier Iris ETERNAL MANA 2 Original Soundtrack - Gentle Breeze and the Earth

The thing about this piece, it's pleasing on the ears plenty, but most of it feels like it should be accompanying something more substantial. Nice and airy. Far too airy to stick.

Boomshine (Game Rip) - Excremental Intermission (Boomshine Mix)

A different sound coming off a piano piece than what I'm used to. It's playful but not without some undertones of weight. The brief experience of this track is rewarding enough that no issue needs to be taken about not being crafted in a more standard sense into a full track.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Soundtrack - Pharotek

Egyptian meets beatz. A gimmick, but an effective one to my ears. Makes me think of a more refined Inscription on a Tombstone from Valkyrie Profile. Not used so brilliantly to make me love it, but it's definitely engaging for the bulk of it. A contender for points.

Fortune Quest Roll the Dice - Dash de GO!!

Endearing from the off kilter first second, and a cool blend of plenty of styles, but not over seasoned with a single one. Melody's farily solid too, if repetitive.

Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~

Okay, so there is one showboat in the bunch, but that celtic burst of sound, the obvious showstealing section of the week is only half the story. I think I appreciate the carefully paced every other section of the song a pinch more than what it leads up to, although the entire package impresses.

Ragnarok Online 2 The Gate of the World (Game Rip) - Intro Theme

Boardering on sublime, but not quite there, not quite as ethereal as Intro Theme would like to pass itself off as. Instrumentals are just a bit sparse, but are sharp where they're at. A pretty piece but I could pass on it.

Trigger Heart EXELICA OriginalSoundtrack - SOUND ANCHOR - STAGE 1 ~Exelica, Dancing at Dawn~

Mega Man X-esque. A decent synthy departure from the rest of the offerings in the week, and pretty slick in its own way. It brings in piano for back up which honestly made me given it more attention than I would have otherwise. It really doesn't stand out like a track of this genre demands to to be in the running.

Way of the Samurai 2 Original Sound Track - Souls Bonded and Split

I don't know what that flute like instrument is called, but there's a hell of a lot of emotion behind it's performance. The strings too. There are a ton of nice little touches to the backing of this piece as well. If I would of heard this outside of SotW, I would of nominated it myself. A lovely, lovely selection.

Point Spread:

2 points - Way of the Samurai 2 Original Sound Track - Souls Bonded and Split
2 points - Fortune Quest Roll the Dice - Dash de GO!!
1 point - Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~
1 point - Boomshine (Game Rip) - Excremental Intermission (Boomshine Mix)

Sorry I just ran out of points - Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Soundtrack - Pharotek

This was an extremely good week. I don't think my scores are normally higher than this.

3pt: Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~ (9/10)
I can explain why this song indeed may be a "grower" to a few other people. The reason I chose this song was because it had some hidden qualities that only careful listeners can find. First, songs like this, including the Asian Collection to Genso Suikoden, desperately need a high quality bass subwoofer with extremely clear treble. The sleigh bells in the background, along with the xylophone, become very crisp with a high quality sound system. It's like hearing the instruments being played in a concert hall. Honestly, my favorite part of the song are the bunches of notes from 1:33 to 2:00 that are extremely sharp and crisp (and form a bridge to the major theme). The climax of the theme proves that there's actually a story to the song.

1pt: Trigger Heart EXELICA OriginalSoundtrack - SOUND ANCHOR - STAGE 1 ~Exelica, Dancing at Dawn~ (8.5/10)
I have in fact loved Megaman themes in the past, and this song really relates to one or two of the themes from the X series for me. I was especially attracted by the piano; however, the piano is not the only reason why I particularly like this song.

1pt: Boomshine (Game Rip) - Excremental Intermission (Boomshine Mix) (8.5/10)
The piano is sometimes an extroardinary instrument that can both provide a complex background "rhythm" along with an inspiring melody. This song begins simple, but does a tiny bit extra in order make me feel completely satisfied. The cliffhanger ending is not something that this track should in any way be voted down on, particularly because this is a gamerip. The ripper probably just didn't include a fadeout at the end.

1pt: Atelier Iris ETERNAL MANA 2 Original Soundtrack - Gentle Breeze and the Earth (8/10)
I think this song accomplishes a lot by staying simple, but this song could still do a tiny bit more in terms of the melody. I'm immediately attracted by the simple broken chords in the background, which sound like quick percussion hits on a light instrument. However, for this song, the beginning is the best because it sounds "new" right then and there.

Way of the Samurai 2 Original Sound Track - Souls Bonded and Split (7.5/10)
I do especially like oriental themes, particularly because I'm intrigued by the different instruments that are not commonly used in Western themes. However, I think this song does lack one major problem. in the second part of the theme when the background instruments become more intense, I keep waiting for the melody to go somewhere and hit a climax, but nothing serious truly happens. I feel that this song could simply do more.

Ragnarok Online 2 The Gate of the World (Game Rip) - Intro Theme (7.5/10)
I think my ultimate issue with this theme really is the voice. I understand Kanno's decision of using this particular voice in order to convey the opening theme, but I honestly think the song would sound deeper and move involved if the voice was less innocent. Kanno's instrumentation is spectacular, which is to be expected from her.

Fortune Quest Roll the Dice - Dash de GO!! (7/10)
That really is one of the weirdest openings to a song I've heard in a long time. The melody is something that I'm somewhat attracted to, but the song does remain a bit repetitive. It's a good song and all, but I feel that this week has music that is even better.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Soundtrack - Pharotek (6.0/10)
Honestly, this is the one song this week that I don't feel particularly attracted to. This song is more ambient, even though ambiance doesn't usually contain Egyptian instruments and beats. I've heard better ambient songs.

NOMINATION:

Artist: Kemmei Adachi, Manabu Abe

(3 points) Boomshine (Game Rip) - Excremental Intermission (Boomshine Mix): I'm a sucker for piano. And so while it's short and its ending is beyond reproach, the flowing melody leaves angels dancing around my head. I agree with Crash on The Sims comparisons (Building Mode 3 is one of my favorites).

(2 points) Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~: This song's a roiler; it just builds and builds until it hits its celtic pleateau. It's the build-up, slow and methodical and pitch-perfect intensity, that gets me.

(1 point) Atelier Iris ETERNAL MANA 2 Original Soundtrack - Gentle Breeze and the Earth: This could have been any number of tracks, particularly Trigger Heart, which just sticks out like a sore thumb this week because of the soft moods of its competition. Gentle Breeze has all the substance of a marshmallow, soft and empty, but it's a quick-and-easy disposable pleasure.

Very tough week. There're a lot of great songs this week. But there are certainly songs I want to give more credit to so...

(2 points) Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~
I thoroughly enjoyed this song. The slower section of the song is wonderfully pleasant and soothing whilst the more upbeat sections are simply terrific.

(2 points) Boomshine (Game Rip) - Excremental Intermission (Boomshine Mix)
Very beautiful piano piece that has some very nice upbeat elements. I decided to play the game and must say it really makes for a welcome experience especially with "Excremental Intermission" playing the background.

(1 point) Atelier Iris ETERNAL MANA 2 Original Soundtrack - Gentle Breeze and the Earth
I like how this has a bouncy, almost Shimomuraish vibe to it.

(1 point) Ragnarok Online 2 The Gate of the World (Game Rip) - Intro Theme
The vocals are rather unsual and it certainly helps to bring out the lovely melody. Would have wanted to give this more points.

If I had my way, I'd give all four songs above 2 points each. C&C and Way of the Samurai were very, very close to getting points.

I was speaking idiomatically.

1 Point ~ Boomshine (Game Rip) - Excremental Intermission (Boomshine Mix)
1 Point ~ Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Soundtrack - Pharotek
1 Point ~ Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~
1 Point ~ Ragnarok Online 2 The Gate of the World (Game Rip) - Intro Theme
1 Point ~ Trigger Heart EXELICA OriginalSoundtrack - SOUND ANCHOR - STAGE 1 ~Exelica, Dancing at Dawn~

This week wasn't as strong as last week for me, but it was darn close. The hardest thing about the selections was that there weren't many tracks that stood out as being head and shoulders above the rest, yet there were many that deserved points. The only track that I wasn't too fond of was Souls Bonded and Split - it's good oriental-esque stuff, and I respect that, but that's a genre that's never done much for me. Dash de GO!! was a little repetitive, so it just missed out on a point. I wish I could give an extra point to Ragnarok Online 2 (that innocent vocal and the instrumentation really hit the spot for me, even if I don't usually enjoy this style of music) but I'd hate to snatch one away from any other track.

...

I was going to vote tonight and would have given either 2 or 3 points to Gentle Breeze. Probably 2 to GB, and 1 to Emotional Theme, Intro Theme, Boomshine, and Pharotek.

I was speaking idiomatically.
Check out my original music at my Soundcloud page!

Latest music rips (updated January 10, 2012):

SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

w00t, 3rd place out of nowhere! Seriously, I thought I was a shoo-in for 8th earlier today.

Maybe the bonus point system could use another layer for matches like this, though I can't imagine what it might be.

Well, the reason the tracks tied this week is that each of the tying tracks not only had the same point total, but exactly the same point distribution. Any system that only takes into account how people voted would've tied them.

However, there have been other ties in the past where the songs had different distributions. I've been thinking that it hasn't been perfect for a while, but I haven't given much thought into making it better yet.

I understand how the system works in theory, of course. I meant that perhaps we should add a contingency to the rules in case this happens again--as you point out, though, it's tough, since the distributions are equal.

Maybe earlier votes could break superties, or votes with comments appended, or we could have a voteoff. I'm just thinking out loud of course; I'd have said the situation would never come up before this week.

Or, god forbid, we could have an honest-to-goodness tie. The point of SotW isn't winning, per se, but spreading around good music, right? What's the harm in placing an additional track onto the SotW page if the voters obviously felt both were deserving?
