Spiritual Battle
I guess you just have to realize that I'm not a huge 8-bit music fan. I just sometimes find the music a bit repetitive and cumbersome. But this song is ok for 8-bit music, though.

Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ - EXEC_RIG=VEDA-.
The high pitched voices are something that you really have to get used to, especially with this soundtrack in general. I think that the opening is pretty nice, but I feel that the melody is a bit too simple. The melody really only ranges within about 3 notes, which I find a tiny bit boring. The instrumentals make up for the melody, however.

Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness
I wonder how people find all of this random music. It's actually a decently catchy song that I would not expect for something named Digimon. I've heard a lot of stuff come from Atelier Iris that are extremely similar.

Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table
This song is a bit boring in my personal opinion, because the background rhythm is a bit annoying. I just don't find any attraction to the melody in the end, unfortunately

Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver
How much do you want to bet that no one is going to vote for this song just because it's too militaristic . I'm a huge fan of militaristic themes that have very strong melodies, I just don't want them to be boring marches. The melody of this song is extremely developed, and the bridges as well as buildup never really sounds the same. Plus, it's my nomination, so I'm probably automatically biased.

Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version)
the initial buildup is a bit long, but besides that, this song is a lot better than the other tracks in this matchup. I have this awkward feeling that I'm going to be voting for this song.

PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd
This song really starts to drag out for a while, at the beginning, and the same type of theme continues to play throughout the entire piece. It's an OK song, but I just don't feel that it's amazing

Ridge Racer 7 (Game Rip) - Supercruiser
This isn't the best that I've seen ESTi done, especially because the music becomes repetitive after a while.

Final Results:
3pt: Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver (8)
1pt: Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version) (7)
1pt: Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ - EXEC_RIG=VEDA-. (6.5)
1pt: Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness (6.5)

PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd (6)
Ridge Racer 7 (Game Rip) - Supercruiser (5.5)
Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table (5)
All Sounds of SaGa - Spiritual Battle (5)

NOMINATION!
Title: Natural Selection
Composer: Yuko Fukishima
Album: Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits ORIGINAL GAME SOUNDTRACK
Track: 5
Disc: 1 (of 1)
Catalog #: VRCL-4007
Source: GFA - http://www.gamingforce.com/audio/gfa-albums.php?id=1269

This song is weird but nice, and actually has bagpipes in it. Good luck with the bagpipes.

I'm pretty sure no one's done this before... at least I hope. This song is definitely an acquired taste, especially from the composer:

Title: Ruria
Composer: Yuki Kajiura
Album: Blood the Last Vampire Original Game Soundtrack
Track: 7
Disc: 1 (of 1)
Catalog #: SVWC-7073
Source: GFA - http://www.gamingforce.com/audio/gfa-albums.php?id=374
Link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/k3ze3h

I was about to nominate In the church, but I feel that's too much of an acquired taste. It's the same as Tommorow's place, which is a vocal, but a non-jpopish one at worst.

How ya doing, buddy?

Natural Selection would be absolutely perfect if the first twenty seconds were chopped off. The bagpipes are dreadful in the intro, but magnificent at 1:05. And who doesn't love some guitar out of nowhere halfway through the track, especially when it takes up the bagpipe's line at 2:37.

I know this because Natural Selection was nominated way back in Week 15. I really need to make that list of previously nominated tracks.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Wasn't Natural Selection in one of the best song/best battle track contests and made it pretty far?

I definitely remember Natural Selection from BSC '04 or '05. It was switched with another track by mistake, if I recall, and much confusion abounded. I like bagpipes as a rule, and wrote that the piper in that song should be hunted down like a dog

All Sounds of SaGa - Spiritual Battle I normally hate people judging nominations by what hasn't been nominated, but why this song, of all the SaGa songs? There are some truly exceptional chiptunes in that collaboration; why put up a dull, repetitive, and uninspired one?

Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ -EXEC_RIG=VEDA-. I gave this a chance, I really did, but the singing was just too shrill, too dreadful. If the director of the Kings College Choir leads a bad life, this will be piped into his infernal cell.

Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness Seeing a -mon suffix on a track makes me nervous; color me surprised that this track was as listenable as it was. Nice melody, and some good ethnic touches.

Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table Another chiptune. You guys DID know about the Best Chiptune Contest, right? This one's pretty vanilla as far a chippy songs go, with lots of movement but very little that's memorable.

Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver I was hugely impressed by "Lock and Load" in the BSC, and as a result I was expecting great things from this track. It doesn't quite deliver, though the militaristics it ponies up are still satisfying and remind me somewhat of the better Ace Combat songs.

Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version) The long buildup had me expecting something big and bold, perhaps even a latter-day rock opera instrumental. Instead of the Superman sundae with Oreos I expected, I was given a junior size vanilla rock cone with noodles on it.

PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd So is he a sweet nerd, or is he a nerd for sweets? And with so many references to pink, sweets, and nerds, what are the chances that this is from a hentai game? I enjoy the underlying techno/electronic sounds and rhythms, but I kept waiting for the track to build to something. When it ended a few minutes later, I was still waiting.

Ridge Racer 7 (Game Rip) - Supercruiser Take everything I said about the above track, remove the positive comments, and add a complaint about length.

Not exactly a lump of coal, but not a Red Ryder BB gun either.

The Point Spread
Digimon - 3 pts.
Front Mission - 2 pts.
Pink Sweets - 1 pt.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Oh, I forgot about that. Yeah, there was a bit of a deal made about Natural Selection because it was part of the Best RPG Battle Track contest. It didn't make it pretty far, though, because the contest just petered out.

This was a pretty damned good week. Great way to start off another batch of eight.

All Sounds of SaGa - Spiritual Battle: This was pleasant, but a bit uneventful. For a chiptune to be viable in SotW, it really needs to be something innovative, and this seems to be very typical of the console. It's not a bad melody but that alone won't be enough to elevate this track above other nominations.

Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ - EXEC_RIG=VEDA-.: This one walks a delicate line between being interesting and being annoying. I'll admit, the instrumentation is sweet. The singing, that leaves something to be desired. Worst Japanese singing? Definitely not. But the same melody could've been delivered by some prominent strings and flutes over the accompanying layers. Other than the shrill singing, this track is very cool.

Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness: It's sort of a shanty, isn't it? I love shanties. A nifty discovery, finding this in a Digimon game, yes. It's very good. Not much else to say here.

Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table: Another chiptune. I'm not sure what platform this was on, but it's got some nice depth to the channel usage. The melody is above average, though not something that made me stop and devote full attention. But it pulls off some nice effects, nonetheless. Why wasn't this nominated to the Best Chiptune Contest instead? Yes, I definitely approve of this nomination.

Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver: Well, color me shocked. This was good! I am so not a big fan of oppressive military themes, but this one had some strong elements of both tempo and uplifting melody. This isn't an angry march; it's a march of triumph. Super bonus kudos for nominating a militaristic track that rocks my socks. AWESOME!

Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version): The title lead me to believe this would be another nifty sea shanty, but I was mistaken. Nevertheless, it's a very snazzy jazz-rock fusion that ventures so far as to become a power ballad by its end. Unlike some regular voters, guitar noodling doesn't irk me at all and I think it fit in well with the particular choice in guitar. This song makes me happy because it's so energetic and fun.

PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd: Now, as a moment of contrast, some peculiar ambience. Compared to other submissions from this week, Sweets Nerd is lackluster. As others have mentioned, there's some disappointment over the fact that it feels as though its building toward a conclusion that never truly arrives. The journey it does provide is nice, but it feels like riding an exercise bike: a lot of work and you haven't really gone anywhere.

Ridge Racer 7 (Game Rip) - Supercruiser: Some eclectic dance beats, bizarre sound hits and ambient samples does not always a worthwhile track make. This one works out to be less than the sum of its parts for becoming somewhat repetitive. It tries to escape that curse with some additional samplings 60% of the way through, but it's just not enough to elevate Supercruiser above "adequate".

Painful Point Spread

3 Points: Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver
1 Point: Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version)
1 Point: Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness
1 Point: Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ - EXEC_RIG=VEDA-.

So, so close...: Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table

Quicksilver earned the full three points from me this week for thoroughly impressing me in a genre that I usually loathe. It's a great track and deserves a place in the top three, for sure.

Everything else got a point for being awesome too. This is one of those occasions where I sincerely wish I had about three more points to disperse, as I don't like leaving some of these tracks with only one point apiece.

Great week. Nice picks, people.

Genesis. I actually prefer the PC-Engine version of this track ('twas on my BSC '06 nom list) because the sound is more aggressive. If you caught the Devil Crash / Alien Crush album I posted in my journal, it's arranged four times there. =O

Forgot you could do that. I was making a wiki article by hand, but with that list, all I had to do was make a Python script to get everything in the right format. Had to add the colors and headers myself, but the rest fell out nicely.

I find it to be largely unnecessary. I'd rather people just download the track and listen to it from there, as to not continuously stream from the server whenever they want to hear the track. The only advantage to this is for people who have a browser on a device that supports Flash, but doesn't support standard MP3 playback, such as the Wii browser (if this even works).

3 points - Spiritual Battle (Always a favorite of mine. It's a bit short, but I'm the guy who once listened to 3d Valhalla from Shin Megami Tensei 2 for an hour straight without getting sick of it.)

2 points - Captain's Voyage

1 point - Sweets Nerd (The intro kinda sounds like Last Battle T260g from SaGa Frontier)

WEEK 81

Ridge Racer 7 (Game Rip) - Supercruiser: Great for a Ridge Racer game, or rather a racing game in general. The main melody is slick, but slightly boring, and the instrumentation is all right, except for the drums, they need to be smoother (like at the very end of the song, except keep it that way throughout).

PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd: Just downloaded this track about 3 or so days ago, I'd have to say this one was one of the better ones, the whole album was alright, but it gave me a headache. This song, along with the ones in the same Soundtrack, fail to keep me interested during the entire song. I'm not entirely sure why, some of my top songs are techno-like, oh well, whatever.

Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version): I like the Guitar melody, but the rest, blah. I guess if they put more emphasis on the other instruments it wouldn't be on the "Guitar Freaks" Soundtrack...

Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver: Great composition, but doesn't fit my taste it seems. The "Militaristic" (as everyone calls it..) theme, is sort of boring sometimes, but this one has a interesting flow to it. And, unlike 'some' songs, this actually didn't focus on the percussion! (which is a plus most of the time... Or maybe I'm just not in a percussion mood this week...)

Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table: Like a lot of '8-bit' music, they have some great parts, and some, not so great. This song holds true to that. (I never have much to say about chiptune songs, or at least it seems that way...)

Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness: o.O Like arch_slayer said, finding these songs seems pretty, uh, challenging. The word "Digimon" or any of the sort, would turn me away instantly. Surprised to find a decent song hidden under the "Digimon" title.

Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ - EXEC_RIG=VEDA-.: My nomination, the only problem with this song is the combination of the singer and that one instrument, very bad choice, but it isn't SO horrid to make me turn the song off. I really like the underlying melody in this song, and the "chorus" singers are a breath of fresh air, great song I thought. I later actually found the 'parallel' album to this one (Reading the Stars), and found 2 superior songs: EXEC_CHRONICLE_KEY/. and York of love. (those 2 songs are awesome, seriously).

All Sounds of SaGa - Spiritual Battle: Like I said earlier, I never have much to say about chiptunes. Overall, I don't like this song.

~~~POINTS~~~
1st EXEC_RIG=VEDA-. 3pts.
2nd Wilderness 1 pt.
3rd Quicksilver 1pt.
4th Supercruiser 1pt.
5th Sweets Nerd
6th/7th Main Table
6th/7th Captain's Voyage (long version)
8th Spiritual Battle
Wow, I'm a bit shocked. This week was incredible - exactly what I was in the mood to hear. That makes voting fairly difficult, though.
All Sounds of SaGa - Spiritual Battle - The weak link this week. Pretty short and dull... combined with the chiptune quality sound, it doesn't suit me at all.
Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ - EXEC_RIG=VEDA/. - I have a high tolerance for this kind of singing, and that's the only part of the song that would make me think twice about it. The instrumentation is excellent, the best I've heard in a while; I especially like the combination of Eastern/Western instruments and melodies.
Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness Does anyone else feel like the track titles for this song and for "Captain's Voyage" should have been switched? A nice find from a Digimon game. Though it's not exactly breaking the bank in the originallity category, I enjoyed the song.
Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table - hmm, well, it's good for a chiptune, but I think I'll have to start holding the inferior instrument quality against chiptunes now that there is an actual best chiptune contest. Nice melody, though not the best this week.
Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver - Wow, I might have to check this soundtrack out. I really like the forceful guitar chords, and the percussion is sweet. A very pleasent surprise, big thanks to whoever nominated it.
Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version) Kind of heavy on the guitar and short on everything else, but it certainly isn't terrible. The melody is nice but I've heard other tracks do extremely similar things, so I can't give it originality points. It has it's pluses and minuses, but I think it comes out on top in the end.
PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd - Another nice song... With queue words like "PinkSweets", I was expecting a bouncy, fun tune, but instead it's more techno-ish. Done pretty well, I'd have to say. I don't understand what everyone was "waiting for", I found the melody pretty entertaining the whole way through.
Ridge Racer 7 (Game Rip) - Supercruiser - Doesn't quite stand up to some of the stronger tracks this week, but still good. Definately a racing game track, I can almost see the "Checkpoint!" signs flashing before my eyes.
*~Point Distribution~*
Chain Attack! 6 hit combo~~~!
Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ - EXEC_RIG=VEDA/.
Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness
Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table
Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver
Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version)
PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd
Well, it seems that I'll have to make another 6 hit combo:
My points go for:
Ar Tonelico
Guitar Freaks
Digimon
Dragon's Fury
Riiiiid... er 7
Ibara
My favorite ones were Ar Tonelico, Guitar Freaks and RR7, but there was enough quality in the others to deserve some gratitude :P
All Sounds of SaGa - Spiritual Battle
Actually not a bad track, it's catchy, but too short and nothing extraordinary in comparison to a few others this week.
Ar tonelico Hymmnos concert Side Crimson ~Tsukikanade~ - EXEC_RIG=VEDA/
I think it's listenable, but it doesn't stir anything up in me. A fine oriental-african fusion, but I generally tend to think they are overrated.
Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness
Wilderness is a good track, featuring a cohesive melody + some instruments that captures the wildlife character pretty well. No complains, just that I simply might not like it enough.
Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table
The upbeat week continues with another decent track. The things that keep this track interesting are the hyperkinetic runs. The rest is varied and okay.
Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver
A strangely effective track. This so-called military theme covers a wide range of emotions and instruments to remain relatively interesting throughout. It goes from intense to reflective to heroic to whatnot.
Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version)
Another very good track, although the idea behind the track is rather ordinary. If I remember correctly there is another Motoaki Furukawa track, which has won a week before. There are definitely similarities to this track.
PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd
It's a wow track. The wall-sound that was created in this track is impressive and hypnotic. The melody, while not something creative, adds greatly to the listenability and timbre of this track. Masaharu Iwata is pretty good at creating ambience. He is the guy who did "One Foot in the Grave" (Baroque OST) and probably "Like the Night of Falling Stars" (I'm not sure about this because one reviewer from Chudah's Corner said so. In the credits it only says Manabu Namiki/Masaharu Iwata) too.
Ridge Racer 7 (Game Rip) - Supercruiser
I am not too sure why I like this track, maybe it's just good music in a very general sense. Energy, beats and atmosphere in a pot.
---
1st - Nerdy Sweets
2nd - Supercruiser
3rd - Quicksylver
I was speaking idiomatically.
1st: Dragon's Fury (Game Rip) - Main Table
My nom. And pretty sweet-sounding for the Mega Drive's sound chip. The melody in the latter half of the track simply rocks. And for the people that mentioned why this wasn't nominated in BCC, well this was on the queue a couple of weeks before BCC came up, and I didn't consider renominating/changing it. Maybe I should have. Oh well.
2nd: Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness
This was a very pleasant surprise, and coming from a Digimon game. Extra point for that.
3rd: PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd
Very flowing and hypnotic. O_O
The rest were pretty good listens, but nothing really appealing to me to award them points. Quality week overall.
Dr. Uzuki
Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman shall be allowed to participate in the film
Getting in the votes before I go to the parties:
3 point(s) :: Digimon Rumble Arena (Game Rip) - Wilderness
Because I ripped it and it's my nom. This game has good music, but this track is clearly the highlight for me. I'll get around to releasing a complete rip eventually.
2 point(s) :: PinkSweets Ibara Original Sound Track - Sweets Nerd
Took me a couple of listens to get into the groove, but then I was hooked. I absolutely love the mood of this. I could totally see this being put into some futuristic adventure game, or something of the sort (Metroid, anyone?). Masaharu Iwata has impressed me on multiple fronts this year.
1 point(s) :: Front Mission 5 ~Scars of the War~ Original Soundtrack - Quicksilver
Reminds me of something from a Metal Gear Solid game, but with a lot of focus on melody, which I strongly approve of. Great track.
Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & drummania 3rd Mix Soundtracks - Captain's Voyage (long version) just missed out on a point, but it is very enjoyable.
